It's very bad that poker has been closed in australia, and how now players who like to play poker, what to do and where to play, can the government change its mind?

Can still play in brick and mortar casinos, pubs, clubs, home games, and at online sites that DGAF about the law.

They're unlikely to change their mind about it right away, but it also seems reasonable to expect that we'll get an exemption and proper licensing carved out for online poker at some point. This is a country that loves gambling. Online sports betting is 100% legal here. There's no reason to think the government won't eventually put the same system in place for poker.

A big part of the situation as it stands right now, IMO, is that online poker is so small the government never actually thought about it very much.

Sad by the news Debby, I still keep hoping to return soon pokerstars real money to the US and all countries that have been banned.
We are together.

I had heard rumours a while back that Australian was going to not let PokerStars available to us.

But according to my mate who came and visited me this morning it's official, he reckons by September this year, bye bye PokerStars.

This news really upsets me greatly I've been playing cards at PokerStars exclusively for at least 15 years, it's a part of my life.

And after September I have to find a new site, and take the risk of it maybe being dodgy. Not to mention having to learn how to use the sight.

This really has me feeling down...

You say that it is part of your life and you are only just now hearing about it, where have you been, Tasmania??? :p

September 11th is when the legislation kicks in, poker stars announced early in the year that they will stop providing services when the legislation is enacted, iirc I got an email from them about it.

I don't think there banning online poker, just the PokerStars site, apparently it's a federal government thing, probably tax related...

Wrong, 888 Poker pulled out on 1/1/17 and party poker announced a couple of days ago that they are pulling out on August 31st 2017 and now Stars is pulling out soon also.

There are still other options for those of us that DGAF what the govt thinks or does.

DILLIGAF

You might get pokerstars Australia.just like the french and the yanks do.

If that was to happen it would already be ready to take over from the normal Stars.

Yep it's true - main thread here: https://www.cardschat.com/forum/pok...-poker-officially-banned-in-australia-321213/

All online poker is being banned, not just PokerStars. In fact, all online poker was already banned, and had been for over a decade. They just hadn't enforced that law until now.

Makes no sense...

Neither does your post.

Can still play in brick and mortar casinos, pubs, clubs, home games, and at online sites that DGAF about the law.

This ^^^^^^

How can the government shut down a poker site? Its not fair that we are forced to pay taxes, obey their laws, and they continue to do as they want. I signed the petition to fight back. And I will continue to play poker, party, and live my life as I decide to. The government can kiss my ass.
We pay people to represent us. But, what do they do? Them attorneys are all out for their best interest. We are manipulated and we know it. We all need to fight back and send them a message at the voting booths...

Just want to make sure if you actually thought about what you wrote.

Laws change, and some like in this instance are starting to being enforced.

This thread is not about America.

Having politicians represent us, and paying their salaries through our taxes, doesn't entitle us to have them do exactly what we want them to do 100% of the time though. Sometimes we need to be saved from ourselves. Sometimes they need to make a decision that isn't the one we'd make, but is for the greater good.

As for sending a message at the voting booth yes, that's all well and good. LOL @ anyone that thinks online poker is a big enough issue to result in a change of government though.

The prohibition of online poker in Uruguay (my country) is on the way to be voted in second instance by this government.
It is a State monopoly issue with gambling, they do not want outside competition, they want to make money just for them, since casinos in this country are controlled by the State.
My question is: since poker is declared a Mental Sport, is not this prohibition a violation of Human Rights, of practicing a sport?
I think the international poker community should join and claim together for this right worldwide, it´s the only way to have strength and pressure on the decisions of our governors, to defend and enforce our rights as mental athletes and people with rights.

It's certainly a much, much bigger portion of the market. I'm much more of a sports bettor than a poker player these days too.

Sports betting is already legal though and doesn't appear to be going anywhere, so no reason for that issue to motivate anyone politically...

They may sympathise with the poker players, being Aussies the majority probably play poker also.

Sad for poker, I'm already seeing the time to happen the same thing here in brazil, for lack of negligence in what the novel passes in Brazil :(

Guys, in Russia, too, officially poker is banned, but those who really love and want to play find ways and opportunities. We closed the casino - we play in the apartments. Dush on line - CuberGhost. I also think with Australians.

Pokerstars is still accepting Australian deposits

And has a cash out option for Australia. Does this mean we can still play on the cash tables? I was hoping to start playing in real money games...

Short answer is it was always banned in Australia, they're just finally getting around to enforcing that ban.

The longer answer is online poker is so small there that nobody in government ever really gave it any serious though. Now that some noise has been made about it, and it's occurred to them that there might be some tax revenue in it for them, the government might think about changing the law.
