I used to play freerolls all the time, in many different poker rooms. It was the way to build a bankroll at the time. And I've done good. I'm still a huge enthusiast about freerolls actually and I believe is a great way to understand how the game works.

It depends on the level of the player. For beginners like me, they are good, because we learn without spending real money.

Wasted time if you play them seriously..

The huge field, low return freebie is take-a chance-city. You get to splash around, see what happens. If you're not lucky, you don't lose any money; you know that going in.
That attitude is horrible if it's real stakes, but it's only a freebie, so the rules do not apply.
If you've proven you can grind, it should all be for kicks and giggles, win or lose.

Currently I only play free tournaments and it is tiring to play a 5000 player tournament but I like to play poker and I am positive I think they serve as learning and that in the end I can receive a reward

Zero. It is all practice. Every time AA gets cracked by T5o is a growth opportunity. I hardly scream, or break stuff anymore during bad beats. Soon, I will be able to sit as serenely as a Tibetan Monk in the flames of donkitude.

Freerolls are like hell, only for poker players. You suffer from the drunk players who jump all-in with 2 7, you get bad beats and get kicked out of it on the bubble by another shocker for 0,001 of money:cool:
But then you are free...someday...

its getting less and less, the promotions, freerolls at poker.
Now Microgaming is gone and Coral and Ladbrokes moved to partypoker network.

Still there is value at some freerolls and with the promotional rolls (achievements) i think i still make some nice profit, once in a while.

I believe that it is impossible to build a bankroll on freerolls. Of course, this is a good practice, but not for a bankroll. So more cache and sometimes tournaments.

Over the years, especially in my early online poker days, I spent countless hours in freerolls. Why not, I was only working part time and going to school part time. Life was easy back then. Now, my time is limited for poker so I'm playing less and less freerolls, spending my time on actual descent size buyins so I can get a sizeable return for my time spent, granted making the money. Any thoughts on how much time you've consumed in freeroll land. Is it worth it?
Chopper1977, maybe you play well now because you spent a lot of time on freerolls?))) Of course there is more prize money in paid tournaments. But freerolls give experience to beginners

Experiment:"can I go up from freerolls to $ 100-1000?"

For some people, poker is just a hobby and not earning money, and why not combine the pleasant with the useful. It is not interesting to play on conditional chips, but here you can win something just symbolically. And even more: to test the hypothesis "whether it is possible with a "0" investment-purely on freerolls to make a Bank of at least$ 100-1000" I for this purpose - as an experiment. I will write the result here on the forum, creating a topic: This will be interesting. :fight:

I agree, I just enjoy playing. Not possible to build any real skills because it is free and most players are wild. They would never play that way if it was there own money on the line. I spend my time on cash games and just FR for the entertainment. If I get lucky and win something great.

I find them to be a waste of time more or less. I try to just play them as a second window on my laptop when I'm grinding micro SNG's. The other day I played in a poker stars free roll. The number of entries were 10500. I finished 23rd out that many people, took me hours. The worst part was, at one point near the end, I was like 6th, but poker stars freerolls are mostly bounty's. So despite being in 6th, sooooo many people with less chips then me had made double because they knocked out more people. Mean while, I killed like so many people, but they just had a few chips left after going all in so I didn't fully knock them out, but because they only had a few chips left, they would go all in on anything in the next hand, and someone would beat them getting the bounty, but I was the one that really knocked them out. It's a dumb structure.

I think it's important for the player to go through all the stages.
initially, it is good to start with freerols to get the experience of each tournament.

Yeah see in my opinion, all the beginners that keep saying "it's a good way of learning", it's actually not, because it's a complete gong show and people play almost anything, which will screw you up when playing for paid tourny's because people play completely different for money, especially the higher stakes.

Exactly! If you can't take a gut punch without losing your mind when it doesn't matter, what chance do you have if you get a bad beat when it counts. Freerolls are training. You don't always get to fight the boss solo, sometimes you have to take out a mob of minions.

Yes, freerolls take a lot of time, but they remind me of micro-limits, freerolls are a good part of poker, it’s easier for beginners to learn, especially since it’s free

Well, I think that these are not wasted hours, but on the contrary, you learn a little more each time you play a freeroll, you must control your skills to be able to go far, always be between 3 to 4 hours.

Free Roll a Time waste?

Free-rolls are good grounds for learning and testing different poker theories. Yes, everyone in free-rolls do not really play sound poker, but it does help with observing and noting tight/loose agro/passive players.
While early on, advance poker plays sail clear over heads, later on they may prove useful.
Another thing to note, not all free-rolls are created equal.

:eek:You are spot on with that, the playing field may be more novice, but it allows one to play various hands from different situations and thus allowing us to gain more experience no matter what... The more you play and digest, as well as reflect, the more you learn :jd4::D

If you are like me and on a limited budget, Freeroll's are a godsend. I have just played one with over 800 players and finished in the cash in 23rd place, and although I didn't win much it was the first time I played on this new site I downloaded and it will not be the last time.
Over the years I have tried numerous site's and although they offer freeroll's in principal you still have to deposit cash with some, so are they free?
I have built up some serious bankroll's in my time and one thing I am sure of is it take's time or money to get anywhere on these site's unless you are prepared to spend time in them.
