I have come to view playing freerolls like playing video games. In my youth I wasted plenty of time playing Halo and Call of Duty so this is just my version of playing video games as an adult. The difference is I could eventually make a profit doing this.

Over the years, especially in my early online poker days, I spent countless hours in freerolls. Why not, I was only working part time and going to school part time. Life was easy back then. Now, my time is limited for poker so I'm playing less and less freerolls, spending my time on actual descent size buyins so I can get a sizeable return for my time spent, granted making the money. Any thoughts on how much time you've consumed in freeroll land. Is it worth it?

I'm still spending lot of time on freerolls I think cause I'm not serious making a living out of poker is maybe that fun way of making extra buck that are really helpful but if I had a job where I could make at least 800$ per month for sure I'll be playing lot's of SNG and bigger buy-ins tourney like around 5-11$ for now is freeroll till i make a good decent bank to start on SNGs xD

I once won back to back freerolls. One of them had a player pool of 560 players and the other had 840 players. Although it felt pretty awesome to finish first in both tournaments I realized that I had run about as hot as I possibly could for about 6 straight hours and what I had to show for it was a combined $28. I decided to use my winnings a play my first ever buy in tournament. It was a $5 buy in with a additional $5 add on. I must've still had some run good in me because I ended up finishing second in that tournament. The payout for second place was $378. The next day I used some of those winnings to buy in to a $10 tournament. I busted once and I rebought and added on so in total it cost me $30. By some crazy miracle I finished second in that tournament as well which paid out $780. I haven't played a single freeroll since that time.

I think that it’s no secret to everyone that a freeroll is entertainment and not making money. 5-7 years ago and earlier on freerolls it was possible to fill 300-500 per month. But then, instead of entertainment, you get hard work for little money.

I play poker for pleasure. I can't see the hours I'm in freerolls as a waste of time. I don't have that illusion of making a living from it. If it ever happens, it will be like winning the lottery. Work of chance.

A free roll is not a waste of time it's a training lesson for something bigger if you feel your wasting your time you are ready to start winning or maybe loosing money so you should just step up a give it a go !:stupido3:

useful practice

Playing freerolls is a good way of learning behaviours in a risk free enviroment and no hand played is a waste of time if you are learning

Freerolls are very useful for enhancing your experience, especially for a beginner. You risk nothing

I enjoy playing poker and am only a recreational type of player.

It probably is a lot of wasted time playing only freerolls most of the time but it is through winning the freerolls or getting in the money as to how I get entry to the real "money" tournaments. It takes a lot of hard work to do it this way but I am a senior and have lots of time to play.

I have never ever used my own money to play in the "real money" tournaments.
I realized a long time ago I would never be good enough to consistently get to the big money tournaments. I just enjoy playing poker.

As long as you can get the benefit and knowledge from freerolls, this time will not be wasted.

In any case, it is practical for a beginner (like me). :D
It allows you to learn and earn a few cents... In addition, blocked at home, It helps to pass the time. :bebored:

I have not played a freeroll yet so I guess I cannot comment from experience, but with no money invested from the players I would think the game play would suffer (almost like play money) I think your time is better invested playing the micro stakes tourneys. There is minimal money invested and you get a larger return when you come in the money.

I have to admit that my play improves the more I have invested in a tournament.

As long as you're "trying", any amount of time playing any type of poker game is beneficial to you in some way.

I've spent many hours playing freerolls and rarely reached the top spots. On the other hand, on the site I play there are sng freerolls (limit of 4 per day) and I used to win (0.05 / sng).

For me, being enrolled on sites with too many daily freerolls did become a time waster and a distraction, especially since I ended up not taking them seriously. So having access to less freerolls a week/day suits me fine.

For me freerolls are an opportunity to learn and play around with strategies, maybe sometimes more aggressive and others maybe not and see which strategy works best for you and try it again. It's a good place to start and to perfect your game.

It's worth it for the risk-free hobbyist. In any case, you are spending your time with benefit. It is good to play private freerolls mainly in small poker rooms.

You can play freerolls if you can't make a serious Deposit to build a bankroll. You can play freerolls for years and stay at this level. The most important thing is not to stay long in this discipline.Learn the game and improve your skill to go through the limits.

For me freerolls are worth it because I haven't made a deposit on ACR yet, and it is how I built my bankroll which is now over $400. It's not a fortune and it was painstakingly slow and I might have done it differently if I did it over, but I wanted the challenge. I wanted to prove I was a winning player. Once I had some $ from freerolls I started small buy ins and if I didn't do well I would study more and drop back a level untill I built it back to where I felt comfortable buying in again. I enjoy this process, it makes me feel more secure, but I am starting to think that I might be missing out on opportunities.
