Dumbest rule change for 2014?

Double points in both championships for the final race of the season.
A drive through penalty here and a stop and go there and the whole seasons results can be manipulated from the stewards office.

Wait... what?!? That's terrible! First I've heard about it too, when did they sneak that one in?

Rule changes for 2014

2014 season changes

The 2014 season brings with it some of the biggest changes to Formula One racing’s regulations for quite some time…

Power - it’s out with 2.4-litre normally-aspirated V8 engines and in with 1.6-litre V6 turbo engines, revving to a maximum of 15,000rpm. While the old V8s produced more than 750bhp, the 2014 units put out around 600bhp with additional power coming from Energy Recovery Systems (see below).

Gearbox - gearboxes have eight forward ratios - rather than the previous seven - which each team must nominate ahead of the season.

Energy Recovery Systems (ERS) - from 2014, a larger proportion of each car’s power comes from ERS which, together with the engine, makes up the powertrain or power unit. As well as generating energy under braking, ERS units also generate power using waste heat from the engine’s turbocharger. Unlike the previous KERS - which gave drivers an extra 80bhp for just over six seconds per lap - the 2014 ERS gives drivers around 160bhp for approximately 33 seconds per lap. To compensate for the extra power being generated under braking by ERS, teams are allowed to use an electronic rear brake control system.

Fuel - to promote fuel efficiency, from 2014 fuel is limited to 100kg per race. Previously fuel was unlimited, but teams typically used around 160kg per race.

Minimum weight - to compensate for the increased weight of the 2014 powertrain, minimum weight has been increased from the current 642kg to 690kg.

Exhaust - unlike previously where two exhaust tailpipes were used, the 2014 regulations mandate the use of a single tailpipe which must be angled upwards to prevent the exhaust flow being used for aerodynamic effect. Additionally, bodywork is not allowed to be placed behind the tailpipe.

Nose height - for safety reasons the height of noses has been reduced for 2014. The maximum height is 185mm (previously it was 550mm).

Front wing - front wings will be a little narrower from 2014 with the width reduced from 1800mm to 1650mm.

Rear wing - the rear wing also looks a little different for 2014. The previously-legal lower beam wing has been outlawed and the main flap has become slightly shallower in profile. Support pillars, however, are allowed. The DRS slot is also bigger than in 2013.

Testing - in-season testing returns for 2014, albeit in a restricted format with the regulations allowing four tests of no more than two consecutive days at circuits where an event has taken place. There are also increased restrictions on windtunnel testing and CFD simulations.

Points - double drivers’ and constructors’ points will be awarded at the final race of the Formula One season - Abu Dhabi for 2014 - in order to maximise focus on the championship until the end of the campaign.

Driver numbers - drivers will be asked to choose their race number, between 2 and 99, for the duration of their career in the FIA Formula One World Championship. Number 1 will be reserved for the current world champion, should he choose to use it. If more than one driver chooses the same number, priority will be given to the driver who finished highest in the previous year’s championship. The driver number must be clearly visible on the front of the car and on the driver's crash helmet.

Additional Friday practice drivers - we are used to seeing teams replace one of their race drivers with a test driver for opening practice on a Friday. However, from 2014 teams are able to run up to four drivers - though still only two cars - in either Friday session.

New penalties - race stewards will have the option to hand out five-second penalties for minor infringements. Additionally, any driver who earns 12 penalty points on their superlicence during a 12-month period will be given a one-race ban.

Pole position trophy - a new trophy will be awarded to the driver who scores the most pole positions during the season. In the event of a tie, the trophy will be awarded to the driver who holds the greatest number of second places. If there is still a tie, the greatest number of third places will be taken into account and so on until a winner emerges.

I'm wondering whether "tiny battering ram sticking out beyond the front wing" solution many teams seem to have adopted to meet this new rule will actually result in the desired safety improvements... looks to me like it'd cause even more damage :p

As for the other changes, I can see already that calling them "power units" instead of engines is going to tilt be endlessly. I can already picture Martin Brundle gritting his teeth as he has to say it every time!

Less than 2 weeks to the first race of the season, Hamilton and Mercedes burning up the track and are early favourites to take the championship.

...so the other front runners are sandbagging in pre-season testing, like they always do? :p

Hmm... Hamilton is still the betting favourite to win the championship, by a small margin over Vettel.

Obviously a huge amount remains to be seen about who performs and who doesn't under race conditions with the new cars, but I'd still be picking Vettel.

Well... judging from practice 1. It appears Vettel's engine package has failed him.

Don't like the new sound either. It's like when I used to run go karts. After those loud ass, top end torquer, 22K, nitro drinking 2 strokes. The sound of the 4 strokes seemed weak, regardless of the horsepower.

That's what I'm getting here. I understand they're putting out huge horsepower with those turbos. But they just sound weak... to me.

My opinion

Lewis hamiltons got this one in the bag today I think :) only drivers that I think can touch him at the moment is Daniel Ricciardo hes shown great pace and just look at how calm he is drives that red bull like it was second nature :p he must have been gutted to sneak into P1 only to have it snatched away at the very last minute by lewis :) going to be great race today I'm looking forward to seeing how they manage with limited fuel may well see a lot of them not finnish and run out of fuel.

I think the new cars sound crap but times change and F1 needed this kick up the arse to make it more even now vettel doesn't have the fastest car so he won't be dominating every race plus for the rookies they will be learning the cars just the same as the top drivers so there no massive advantage for the top driver which has shown as the young teams did really well yesterday well apart from max chilton :p it surprises me how he stil has a seat in F1 he has hardly finished a race and even when he does he's at the back of the grid yet look at paul di riesta he in my mind was going to be a star in the near future (not just because he's scottish aswell) but because he was starting to finish races in better position and with far greater consistency than many other drivers and yet he wasn't offered a seat by any team but he's back at DTM doing what he does best hopefully we will see him back in F1 again soon :) .

Ricciardo excluded from Australia race results 16 Mar 2014

Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo has lost his second-place finish in Sunday's Australian Grand Prix after stewards decided his car had run with too high a fuel flow rate during the race. The team are to appeal the decision.

Ricciardo crossed the line behind winner Nico Rosberg to claim his maiden F1 podium. His exclusion elevates McLaren's Kevin Magnussen to P2 and team mate Jenson Button to third.

Under article 5.1.4 of the new 2014 technical regulations, cars are limited to a fuel flow rate of 100kg/hour, as measured by an FIA-homologated sensor on the car.

According to the stewards’ report, Red Bull used a different fuel sensor on Saturday after they found the one used on Friday had produced unreliable readings. However, when the sensor used on Saturday failed to provide results that were satisfactory to them or the FIA, they were instructed to change back to the original sensor within parc ferme on Saturday night.

Considering this sensor unreliable, Red Bull chose to rely on their own internal fuel flow model, something that the stewards say is in violation of the procedure outlined in the technical regulations.

Furthermore, Red Bull were warned by the FIA’s technical representative during the race that the fuel flow on Ricciardo’s car was too high. The team were given the opportunity to correct this, but according to the stewards’ report, they chose not to make any changes.

Announcing their intention to appeal the stewards’ decision, Red Bull said: “Inconsistencies with the FIA fuel flow meter have been prevalent all weekend up and down the pit lane. The Team and Renault are confident the fuel supplied to the engine is in full compliance with the regulations.”

*sigh*

Well that's a shame re: Ricciardo. Having read the complaint, I don't like Red Bull's chances of appealing this successfully either.

Thought the race itself boded well for the rest of the season - the Mercedes performance gap surely won't be that big for the whole year, reliability on the whole was a lot better than what a lot of the doomsayers were predicting, and even though the engine noise is nowhere near as sexy as it was in previous years, I found that it at least sounded a little better when there was the whole field running as opposed to just a few cars.

Great to see Williams back in the mix too after so many years of disappointment.
