Most people don't have patience these days. I'm sorry but if you want to build a bank roll then you most definitely need patience most of all. With a minimum deposit of say $20 it is possible to slowly build a bankroll. But you cant play at the cash table for more that 2 or 5 cents because you'll end up losing as much as you win and spin your wheels or slowly lose your whole deposit in a short time. I think the safest way to build a bankroll, yet it is a very slow process, is to deposit $20 and then only play Freerolls. Using your existing bank roll only for Rebuys. The problem is the long time that it takes to finish a Freeroll yet after a lot of experience you'll be surprise how you can accumulate a couple dollars a week playing in maybe 5 or 6 freerolls a week. At least that way you should be able to always keep adding to your bank roll and not have to deposit again. Patience is the key. One day you'll look at your bank roll and say hey I can afford to buy into a few 1 to 5 dollar tourneys and who knows you may get lucky until you get to that ultimate WITHDRAWL day!

i agree with this, but man it really is a slog :p the added benefit of freerolls is learning how to deal with your stack in long tourneys which is great experience for those looking to progress to high reward mtts

Good post but I would like to add that there are some freerolls/MTT's that have a great value. If I have a small bankroll and/or I'm starting out with basically $5.00 dollars, cash games are not a good option at this point, even if playing .01/.02, which basically means I have 2.5 buy-ins, and if I'm playing SNG's, that's 3 to 8 buy-ins, depending on what you are playing. But there are some good freerolls out there, but not all freerolls are created equal. It doesn't make sense to focus on a $25.00 dollar freeroll that has a rebuy for $1.00 dollar and an addon for $1.00 or $2.00 dollars when you have to finish in one of the top spots just to break even or make a small profit. However, the Freeroll sponsored by poker.org has a great value and you get a decent stack, as does the Freeroll sponsored by Jackpot Freerolls which has a rebuy for just .10 cents, and a addon for .10 cents. I've cashed this tournament numerous times and even if I'm in for .40 cents in rebuys and addons, the min cash is usually .48 cents.

I can't resist spin&go, I wait when the jack pot drops out... for now there is a continuous loss (

*there were cases, by the way, when has won in cardschat (the 5th place), and later has taken the second place in baunt 0,55... after again loss in spin&go

I have to be honest. I have never set aside an amount of money just for poker. However, lately I have been thinking this exact same way. (That is how I found this post.) I logged on just to make a post similar to this one...

I am going to try out 20x buy-in method for cash and STT (5% of bank roll for buy-in).
As for MTTs I will go 2% for freeze-out and .5 % for re-buy/add-on tournaments.

My personal problem lately is that I sit down too long after making money in cash. I want to really focus on buying in for what I am rolled for and getting up when I reach my goals.

Not so simple as you think. I'm 5 years old and their tactics on the bankroll has long been identified. Largely it depends on your social status in the country where you live. If your salary is small and does not allow to have their own money at the box office, and the bankroll you'll lead the other way.

FWIW I wouldn't be too focused on quitting when you've reached an earnings goal - you can end up creating an artificial ceiling for yourself in those situations.

Instead I'd focus on recognising when the game is good for you, and when it isn't, and acting accordingly.

If you're up five buyins but the table is still "good", as in there's still bad players spewing away money, you're alert and you're making good reads then I see no reason to leave the table.

On the flipside if the fish have left the table and been replaced by solid players, or if you're tired and not on your game any more, that's probably a good time to leave.

I want to build a bank roll from total scratch without depositing anything. I just want to try this challenge. Today I was nearby getting my first money but was so unlucky at the last hand, that I didnt make any money. :/
The guide mentioned above seems very interesting though, I will definitely try some points out of this text.
I think playing cash games is better than playing MTTs

I have to agree with a lot of the post. There's no quick way to put it. I've turned little money into bigger bank rolls several times. I would say most of the time, when the bank roll is small, you have to be lucky; even without getting ACES.

I haven't done sportsbetting in so long. I made really good on the years when Notre Dame would start off undefeated. Lol. Since they haven't been regularly, I stopped way back when. Good luck though. :)

LOL nope, I'm around :) Hope the swings have been good to you mate!

I get very little chance to play poker these days unfortunately, live or online, so I haven't been active in the strategy or hand analysis forums. I've found sports betting fits my schedule a lot better these days so that's how I've been getting my gamble on ;)

So today I made my first 35 dollars from scratch! I won a tiny money in a freeroll, then progressed through spin n go and finally earned a bit from playing cash games ! :)

I intend to start in SNG and then migrate to MTT.
SNG $0,25 90 players at first...
You guys believe is a good way?
One thing that worries me is the transition from SNG to MTT, I can go relatively well in SNG, but when I played tournaments I was always a disaster with the same amount of study

Man, I would choose the 90 players 0.25. Some people prefer the 45 players, I think is easier to play the 90 players than 45 players, because in the beginning many crazy players are eliminated quickly, then there are only about 60 fighting for money and in addition to having more ITM, the prize is also higher for the top finishers.

The only downside is the average time of a full tournament, but if this is not an issue I would start this way.

45 / 90 player SnGs are still MTTs, and much higher variance than other forms of the game. Y'know, for what it's worth...

Plus increased variance. Increased variance is an issue when you're under-rolled.

Start with freerolls until you feel that you consistently win. Then you could either only use the freeroll money, or deposit a small amount (10 bucks maybe) to try to increase your bankroll through the game type you like and are best at.

This has been a good read. Page one alone have a great discussion and variety of ways to build BR. Hope I could muster the discipline and patience to stick to all the good points.
