Awesome post. Sorry if this has been answered as I only read the OP. You say to avoid MTT's, is this only if you have a tiny bankroll? I know variance is much higher in MTT's, but my plan was to deposit $100 - $200 and play either $1 + .10 or $2 + .20. Thoughts?

Really great post I'm new at building bankroll (i've been playin PM poker at stars and now i'm going FR), and i will follow your advice.
IMO maybe sticking to 1 game is good but is better to have at least 2 games you are good at, for example NLHE and PLHE or PLO.

such a great post even for small stakes live. The weekly MTT's at my casino killed my BR. That and buying a new guitar and amp... I lost one buyin live. after 1600 i went down to merely 200 left, and saving up for at least 6 buyins and a weeks pay for vacation from work. Cash is where I make my most money.

Bankroll

I had to work with a $5 bankroll online. I ended up taking first in a free roll of 703 players (only worth $2.50) and played NL2 NLHE. Cash games were high variance for me, but I got lucky a few times and climbed to $15. I lost about 5 to NL5 cash games (where I still struggle). So I moved on to $1.50 buy-in SNGs. They provided me lower variance to slowly but surely build a bankroll, and now I have reached $22 and counting.

Really like your post. I'm just playing NLHE tourneys and nothing else. I feel like I've still got so much to learn, so many books to read still on that game. I like the focus and I think I'd just start getting confused if I learn other games. I've got over $60 from freerolls on America's Card room now, so I'm trying to live the dream of getting a real bankroll together :)

I agree with almost everything. I just can't agree with the mtt point. I'm one of those poker players that love to play mtt's. I like the way they go, how you build a stack out of nowhere, and yes, there's a lot of variance, but I think this sort of game helps you improve your skills. Mtt's have helped me improve my bankroll management and my overall knowledge of poker.

disagree on mtt's and reasoning is this i dont into the philosophy of the variance being as factor as made out. If have 10.00 to build from id have to play pennies cause 20 minutes of bad luck at nickle dime could destroy the entire bankroll and im such a strong mtt player always have been that if play for 2.00 per event id come out ahead if played 5 events. That is from first time ever did mtt event i felt comfortable at home. I have to force self to grind pennies or nickles or dimes to move up bank roll much easier to win a couple mtt's for me:)

A problem I have had in the past was playing too many games none the less different games at that. At the same time. now I stick with one game type and max 4 games at a time. Easier to tank at times and multi task different screens equals better results!!

OzExorcist I enjoyed the post. Being a player who is trying to improve his play and be more consistent I appreciated this post. I have been told by others that single table tourneys maybe a better way of starting as a new player. Thanks for your input I enjoyed it.

Thanks for the post

I was going to start a thread about this exact same thing! I'm just freerolling it and wondered how others have built a bankroll from nothing. I've cashed in many freerolls (few bucks here and there) but haven't been able to build off of any of these tiny wins.

I really appreciate the cash game tip.

What's the most any of you have been able to build from nothing?
