One thing you should know. Poker is a fun game but it should never be a source of income. So don't think you are smart and save your money before you regret it.

Are you talking to yourself?

Why shouldn't it be a source of income?

What happens when I KNOW I am smart?

What should I save my money for? What should others on a 'poker forum' save their money for? Perhaps they enjoy playing poker for a recreational activity.

I honestly think your first line of your post should read:
One thing I have learned... I am not able to win at poker and I am not smart.

It depends on how balanced you are, but even for the least balanced there are limits that everyone should use at any poker site.

What? What do you mean here ^ ??

"If you have to play ... play small tournaments"

What do you mean by 'IF you have to play' ??:confused::confused:

This is a POKER FORUM.... I would think that many (most?) would WANT to play because well... they WANT to.

Perhaps we're having a communication disconnect here with some sort of language barrier or something lost in the translation???

Maybe your post means "If you can't play 'freerolls' and you still have the desire to play, then stick to 'small buyin' tournaments (which quite often are not 'small' at all & more often they are the larger field games in the lobby).

It seems many gear their answer towards only their own experience and it seems a lot of that experience these days is limited to 'freerolls'. (maybe I'm wrong?).

Agree

Don’t expect to make money at poker right away. Play the very lowest stakes that you can. After you earn 100x of those stakes, then move up. Do not rush it. It will cost you.

If you look at poker as work, with discipline and consistency, the financial results will show up.

Maybe I really hate money

haha, Risto you have wonderful catches, already at the tables it's boring, I don't remember good beats with you, just bad beats, no matter how much I take care of my stack, when I see it it's in the middle and your salvation comes on the river. :D:D:D:D:D

knowing yourself

Of course, we all want to win, but the reality is that we can't all win...someone has to lose for others to win. I just feel sad when I see people playing with money they cannot afford to lose. Of course my goal is to win and be a winning player, but I would not ever want to have to depend on poker for my living expenses.

Poker is a very good source of income for those players able to beat the stakes they play. But due to the nature of the game there will be more losers than winners. If you are one of the majority of losing players you might find it difficult to understand that long term income is possible.

Perhaps rather than posting threads like this you should spend time working on your game. The vast majority of losing players believe they are better than they actually are.

If your just starting out I know from experience digging your way out of freerolls is possible, but not easy and takes forever. Maybe set a limit on what you play cause you can make quite a bit online with only 20 dollars playing as best you can. You make money over time not right away. You would be surprised how you can make a few thousand playing for 2 dollars at a time. Be smart and learn money management.

I totally agree.
I wonder how much do you do online monthly?

I am in total agreement with you, Poker is a Fun game and when you play on-line, you should always treat it as nothing more than a Hobby, There are so many things that can go wrong when playing on-line, which are out of your control, Besides the obvious, like Internet connection failing, there are Viruses and computer crashes, which can cause you to lose.
Also the fact that you cannot get a positive read on some players, because you cannot see them to read body language etc, makes every hand a stab in the dark.
Poker for an income, is hard work whichever way you look at it, and even when playing Live games, it can be stressful, especially if you are playing for stakes you are not comfortable with. Follow the 1% bankroll rule, stay within your comfort zone, and you can make profits, and have fun doing it.

When the fun Stops, STOP!

I currently only play with a bankroll of about $50, I used to play much higher but the games started getting less fun and more serious so I pulled back. It's never been more fun playing with an amount that doesn't hurt if I loose it.

How to learn to play BR? After unsuccessful sessions, an attempt begins to climb higher by the limit and, as a result, a loss (

Poker is a game for adequate and responsible people. Adequate people usually know what to risk and treat the game as entertainment and not as an investment project.

But what abour pros?
Of course most of them lost a lot before becoming profitable...

I don't think this ^ is true.

Many of the top online (& live) HSMTT players have gradually moved up in stakes, some much faster than others. I don't even know of any who lost a lot before becoming profitable.

exactly, it should not be seen as a source of money. There are lucky ones who do it, but they must invest money and a lot of time to do it.
I tried to make it profitable a while ago and pay the bill, I only play recreational

Well said, Poker is not a game you can get rich quick from, it takes a long time to get to be a good player, good enough to be able to break even, or just make a small profit, Anyone who thinks they can pull off a World title and win millions of Dollars are just living in a dream World.
I have read many books by Professional players, and one piece of advice that they all give you is "Respect your Bankroll", Don't be tempted to move up in stakes just because you cash in one big tournament, because it might be a long time before you cash in another.
Playing Poker is like running a Marathon, and you need to pace yourself, always keeping something in reserve, and practice, practice, practice. The wins will come eventually, but it can be a long, hard slog.
A lot of Professional players do all sorts of other things, besides playing Poker, they may have gone into other businesses, with Friends to gain an income, and some even write blogs, or stream live games to supplement their life style, I know of one professional that buys Property at Auctions and then either Flips them to make a profit or rent them out.
Either way, Poker is not a sole income for many professional players, So before you give up your day job to become a professional player, Think! and be sure you have something to fall back on.

When the fun Stops, STOP!

I'll have to follow the poker poet's advice, I always have fun, but I'm leaving some things aside to think about poker, and amazingly I'm a casual player..abçs

I'm not a professional player, it's hard for me to say how you can make good money on poker. But I think there are people for whom poker is the main source of income.
