It's really not hard to justify.
These guys are getting screwed by their employer.
I as a player should not have to supplement their income when I am already paying a rake of 10%

The rake is plenty big enough for their employer (a casino for god's sake) to pay these guys a living wage.

Why don't you state the truth? You are raked 10% up to $5 max, meaning that a $1000 pot still gets raked $5. You try to justify your point so much that you sound more and more like a cheap wad. Why don't you just look in the mirror and say " Im cheap"

LOL I like people, and I like dealers... just don't ask me to supplement their income.

It's not supplementing my income when I make $3.32 an hour. I think your best bet would be to play in home games.

I don't tip either
or play the bonus
they don't like that at casinos
and most of the time it shows in their actions and comments

So.....how do you play the bonus in Texas Holdem?

I'll make this short and sweet. I play poker outside of work to make extra income. A typical month is about 2,000$ cash profit, possibly more in any given month. I play low stakes live 1/3 NL, 5 sessions a week at typically 5-6 hours on average.

Here's the bottom line "IF" again "IF" you want too be a profitable player at these stakes you need TO STOP TIPPING. Bottom line. At the rate that i play i would be tipping probably 30$ a night minimum and i did for years until i wisened up. I was spending 500-600$ a month on tips so stupid. That's about 4-5k a year plus the rake it's 1000s more! Forget about it, you won't make money guaranteed.

What a poker dealer makes is none of my business nor do i care. Personally, i think the casino should pay them more and if it effects the rake so be it. Until that day I'll continue not tipping and paying my bills with the money that I EARNED. I make excellent $ at my job, it's not that i can't afgord it, It's that being business savvy and making smart financial decisions is more important then lining someone's pockets up day in day out just so i can fit in.

I did a search and all the tipping threads are really old, but I expect to hear some of he same ideas.

I guess I'm the bad guy because I rarely (if ever) tip the dealers.
I see poker dealers as unskilled laborers who should feel lucky if they are making minimum wage.

The rake in live games is already way too high. For example: online I pay a 5% rake with a $2 max (I think), live however, I am paying 10% with a $5 max. So it is already hard enough to beat games like 1/2 or 1/3.

I only tip if I win the hand at showdown and win at least 40BB. If so, I will tip a $1 if I think the dealer is friendly and knowledgeable.

Let's hear it....What do YOU tip and why?

I tip for the good juju and you should too too.

No such thing as good juju u idiot. You either get your money in good or not. The variance of the game plays itself.

I tip everyone. All the time. I overtip because I've been poor and I know what a good tip means to anyone who gets it. Once, I left 5 lousy dollars to a cleaning person in a crappy hotel in Texas and she hand wrote a full page prayer of thanks to Jesus for my generosity, for 5 stinking dollars. That's what a tip can mean to some people.

When industries decide to share more of their profit with the rank and file that earn the wealth through the labour they provide, I might decide to stop tipping but until then I'm happy to share my dollars to those who are making my life a little easier and enjoyable.

I'm surprised at all the vitriol non-tippers are receiving.

I've only recently started playing live games, and only occasionally tip on a good run out. I have no problem tipping other service industry employees, as I know they oftentimes make less than minimum wage and rely on those tips to survive.

In the case of casino dealers, though, if everyone tipped every single pot they won then the dealers would make upwards of $30 an hour.

Coming from a low-income background and trying to make some extra money playing poker (so far so good!!) I find it EXTREMELY hard to justify tipping someone to the point where there income is more than mine or most hardworking people I know.

I appreciate the service the provide, and I will throw $1 or $2 to the dealer for an especially large pot or any service rendered above and beyond the bare minimum. It just seems ridiculous to expect me to tip someone dozens of times a night just for doing their job in reasonably well.

Yes I do tip...Because I'm not an ass. And I play a lot. And I am an ass. A lot. So tipping makes me feel better. If you can't afford to tip a$1/$3 live game.... Don't play at my local casino please. Cause I like the dealers. And no one will like you.

Here, is someone who understands... Poker dealers are not worth $30 a hour. In fact, they are lucky to be getting minimum wage.
Unskilled labor.

I mean its your money afterall, they are doing their job like they are supposed to, i tip if i win big at the end of the session and thats it, if im playing 2/5 and im up 1k at the end of my session i'll tip the change usually so if i cash out 1540 i'll just leave 40 and so on, might tip bigger when im up huge, i had a session where i made 9k at 5/10 so i let like 200$ tip which i think is way too much anyways but i didnt mind

I tip fairly generously but I do not think it is right for these large corporations to pay service staff less because it is expected they will get tips. There is no way waiters and waitresses should be paid less than minimum wage. They are abused in my opinion.

A good dealer is worth every dollar. And if you don't know what my point is when I called you an ass in no uncertain terms.... well, I'm wasting my time. So the joke's on me I guess. Be a *****, don't tip. The dealer won't like it.... But I know I'd love for you to sit at my table with all of your min-buy-in unskilled labor dollars. I may tip the dealer your stack :)

I tip always. Whether I take down blinds or whether I'm taking down a 1000 pot. I also play a ton of live games. Usually it's a dollar per both but if it's an insane pot depending on what I am playing it will be between 5-25. I know some people who will always increase the tip amount depending on the stakes they are playing IE 1/2 = $1 tip E.H - 2/5 = $5 E.H ...5/10 = $10 E.H. but I think that logic is a bit overkill. If you run down the math and "theories" of the game after a couple hours of playing in a 1/2 game you should have tallied $1000 with making that $1000 you've PLAYED 75 hands to hit that 1k. If you've tipped $1 and nothing more through that you've tipped less than 10%. Again though someone times it doesnt equal out like that but when I'm playing I dont think about losing money by tipping , I do it because it's part of the game and it's a form of respect to the dealers.

Talk about baseless assumptions.
Why is someone an asshole if hey don't tip?
I can accept that you call me an asshole for my opinion of poker dealers as unskilled labor not worthy of $30 an hour, cool I get it, but if someone doesn't tip that makes them an asshole by default??

wow...

Guys there are like 16 different reasons why cash game NLH is no longer profitable excluding obvious donkey/fish money at the table. Tipping and the obligation to do so is just a form of scamming to get profit....profit not revenue out of victim players. You have to pay self employment tax and 47% on winnings in a statistically optimized plateau NLH game filled with super specialists and poker fanatics and you guys think giving out money to subsidize casino labor "costs" is smart?

I never tip and if they give me attitude I don't care....though I 98-99% time don't play cash game.

Well then 98-99% of the time... who cares. lol. Hey listen. I love staying home playing online in my PJs for lots of reasons. One being win rate. Percentage wise..... It's higher -for me- online. But I play small- and/or free. 1/2 or less rake and no tip obligation. I get it. I like it.

I also like playing live. And cash, live. and I like -most of- the dealers- and I'm glad the poster agrees he an an ass. I don't care which reason of his assholariery he agrees with. I too can be an ass. But I prefer to make it at the expense of stupidity. Even if my own. And I do not believe assholariery is a word. But I do believe it should be.

Calling someone - who's dam good at what they do and willing to do it hours at a time- unskilled and unworthy.... it's offensive. I am extremely difficult to offend. And I don't work for tips. I dish. I can take.
That's all. This thread. Like a nasty run out. Bummer. Next hand.

I'm not coming at you with any hostility just wanted to give my answer to your question. I usually tip a buck in pots around 20 dollars and if it's over a hundred 5. If there's a couple grand in the pot I'd throw em a 25 dollar chip.
I just learned from poker pro's that you have to account for tipping as part of your poker overhead. Just like gas to the casino or hotel stays and food. When you encounter anybody in the service industry tips are just part of the deal. I tip for friendly fast service so my time is enjoyable as well as profitable. I mean if the dealer had an absolutely miserable personality or was misdealing the cards and stalling action all the time then they wouldn't get tipped. So it would also discourage that as well. Any way good luck at the tables man!!

I tip dealers that make eye contact, say thank you and otherwise acknowledge your tip. For dealers that take my tip for granted ...it only happens once. When the dealers change then I start over.
The amount tipped is commensurate to the pot and stakes. The higher the stakes the better the dealer should be. I also don't put up with people who are rude to the dealer.
