casinos should pay their employees more and do away with the tipping. Increase the rake. For tournaments that I have been in, the tipping is done at the end of the tournament and spread to all dealers. I have seen casinos state how much to pay for each hour played, plus a percentage of earnings.

Cash games are tipped differently. I generally only play tournaments.

Personally don’t leave a tip because I’m not sure if the dealer will get it. My friend used to work in a small casino and told me many different stories. One night the rich man lost a lot of money on roulette and left him $ 300 in tip chips. Everything was taken by the casino, the friend did not receive anything at all

Having worked in a restaurant for many years and understand the nature of recognizing they live of tips,

I think waiters and waitresses are less skilled than poker dealers. Also, in most countries waiters and waitresses don't get tips and that is the way it should be. The reason for this is that doing such a job is worth a certain amount, which is reasonably low, and the system doesn't work well when hard working fast food staff don't get tips, some restaurant waiters make hundreds in tips every night, and some make next to nothing. Obviously that is unfair. Of course, waitresses and waiters should all get what it takes to find staff without tips, and tipping should be rare. I guess that $14 is more than enough, but if you can't find the right people for that then you need to increase it.

Tipping should always be rare. In that way, the hourly wage must be reasonable for the job, and when a dealer, waiter or waitress receives a tip they can be surprised and appreciative, rather than thinking it is normal or even being annoyed that you donated money to them that is less than the amount people normally donate to them.

In America you have many career waiters and waitresses when these jobs should generally be filled by struggling students. The reason for this is that they are often overpaid.

As for poker dealers, I usually tip $1 or $2 every hand I win that is not tiny. If I am drinking and win a big pot, I will tip $5 or something at $1/$2. The dealers are generally friendly, nice people who add a lot to my experience. Waiters on the other hand, are usually nice enough, but even before entering the restaurant I resent the pressure to donate to them, and their largely overdone smarmy fake friendliness which seems to mainly be an appeal for large tips. I would feel quite happy tipping if I knew how much the waiter or waitress was earning. If I could see they earned $30 that hour, I would tip zero. And if I saw they had earned $4 or something I would feel sorry for them and tip more.

If you think dealers are unskilled, I BEG you to please go in and audition for a dealing job at a casino and PLEASE report back and tell us how you did. Its an unskilled job, you should be hired on the spot, right?

The vast majority of dealers DO NOT make min wage. They are considered TIPPED employees and are paid $4-6/hour.

All these examples of "I dont tip the mailman." As if mail people make $4/hour in an industry where tipping as compensation is the standard.

If you truly take issue with this standard, then you should contact your representatives to raise/eliminate the tipped worker credit. Which is what alllows employers to pay less than min wage. There are several reps in congress working on making that happen.

Non-tippers are gonna be non-tippers and will find any excuse for it. Just dont be surprised next time you want to straddle and the dealer gets the cards out faster than you can get your straddle out and its "sorry, straddle must be posted before the cards are dealt"

Make sure you cry extra loud when the dealer makes a ruling against you, mucks your cards, or hits you with a "oops" burn and turn before youve acted. Because I assure you, that dealer is savoring every non-tipping tear you drop. Im sure its all "coincidence". Dont blame the dealer. Good unskilled help is hard to find at only $4/hour.

Good luck :)

So you are saying that they will cheat you if you don't tip? Just asking, I have never played live and would have no idea how or how much to tip. Maybe I should just stick to online...

People who are cheap will always try and justify not tipping,,,I have a simple rule for tipping,bad/average service=small tip,,,good service=good tip! Life is easy,,,:p

I think there is something wrong with the system when you gift money to people who provide you with bad service. Basically, this shows that you feel obligated to tip, which is what I dislike about it. The rule for everyone should be, poor service = complaint. normal service = nothing Great service = tip if you are able to afford it and positive feedback/positive review. Also, the public should not be tricked into overpaying largely unskilled laborers. I prefer staff to be paid what they are worth by the employer, so that all employees are fairly paid. I believe that some waiters and waitresses earn far more than they should, I think dealers should get around $20-$30 an hour.

Basically the rational behind tipping a dealer is due to being served a good or Great hand that produced x amount of money.

Nothing wrong with spreading some of one's good luck at the tables.

While that does happen, you should not credit your dealer with a good hand, because you should not blame them for a bad hand. That being said, if I am feeling happy because I won a big pot, I will tip more.

It is easy enough to ask them. I am less likely to tip if tips are shared and will not tip if the dealers don't get them. I have found this at some bars too.

This is one of the huge selling points of online poker rooms!

I always did tip live dealers though. I saw the shit they put up with.

Generally I tip a person for the service I have received, if it has been an enjoyable experience then I will tip, but if I find the service below what I find acceptable, I will not, once at a big game I played I busted out early and while I was waiting for a Friend to finish I asked one of the waitresses if they pooled the tip's and shared them, when she said yes I gave her £10 and said "here I haven't paid for a drink all night, so throw that into the pot" Because I had great waitress service at my table and appreciated it.
Likewise if I lose at a cash table I will sometimes throw my remaining chips to the dealer and say " hope you have more luck than I have" and walk away rather than push all-in and lose, I don't hold it against a dealer when I do lose, it is all down to the Poker God's and in their hands not his.
Sometime's it is better to know when you are beat and just walk away, just don't blame the dealer's for your own mistakes and bad luck.

When the fun Stops, STOP!

In that case the pay doesn't matter at all, and hence they don't need a tip, right?
I am referring to those dealers who make a full time career out of dealing poker.
As a dealer at a large casino, I take my job very seriously, and I’m disheartened at your view of us.
I don’t think you understand what it takes to do what we do. Not only do we put up with a ton of BS, but we have a lot of things to keep up with at any given time. One misstep from a dealer and shit hits the fan fast.
Many of us have spent a lot of time working to improve, and that’s just among those of us that even managed to pass an audition. Where I work, we have about a 55% pass rate for auditions. It’s quite strict, and a lot of people just don’t have what it takes. I’ve seen plenty of poker players go into a training course thinking they would breeze through it, only to fail.
There aren’t many of us, and a lot of us love the game enough to devote ourselves to providing a live experience for YOUR enjoyment. So when you don’t tip, we think you’re an ungrateful *****, quite frankly.
It’s not even about how much we ship you in a pot. It’s more about showing some appreciation for what it is that we contribute to your life.
