IMO, It's not a sport. A game of skill, yes. A sport? I say no.

just cause it's a skill/mental game doesn't make it a sport it just so happens to be entertaining to watch-spectators and therefore gets recognition by some as a sport because of that

Yea, kind of... but it's more like mental skills based hazardous game then sport. I have got the term "sport" connected with physical performance.

To me poker is a sport and this is why:

Why would ESPN cover a game of poker when it is a sports channel, because poker is not seen as a game of fun but more of a sport played with skill.

If you consider what a game is then you can say what a sport is:

Football game and sport on ESPN
Cluedo game and not a sport, never will you see this on ESPN
poker game and sport (just like football) and is on ESPN.

of course not, because unlike sports poker has a lot of luck nvolved, imagine a rookie tennis player beating a number 1 player, thats imposible, however you can beat any player even three or four times in a row if you are lucky. also poker doesnt have any physical activity so it cant really be considered a sports. neither chess is a sport for me.

I don't think that luck being or not being involved does or doesn't make it a sport..

Luck is in every sport did the team make a lucky catch did the referee make a bad call that went for or against you did some one shoot a last second half court shot that went in? of these things can change the game and win or lose you the game

I think poker is a sport because it is a game which people compete against each other and do it while entertaining..

For the Physical exertion aspect adrenaline rushes long grinds and iratic changes to the heart beat.

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying its the same type of sport as Football or basketball but that doesn't mean its not a sport

Example: Anime is a cartoon but its a different type of cartoon so instead of calling it a cartoon we call it anime..

Well ESPN does broadcast it quite a bit...

Then again they also broadcast the Scrippt's Spelling Bee.

The answer: I honestly can't say I think so because anybody can play it and be good at it without actually knowing what they are doing (if they are lucky enough).

I don't think that poker is a sport. If it is a sport than chess is sport too.
BTW, should we count chess, domino as sport too? :) In my opinion - NO

chess is a sport...People just look up the definition...that's all you have to do, anything where you show skill in a game format is a sport

For the millionth time --- and this post is to jcla and the rest of you that think otherwise --- poker is NOT a sport.

Grinding for a long stretch can be tiring, but not because it requires physical exertion. Sitting in a chair for 12 straight hours playing poker is no more tiring than sitting in a chair and working an office job for 12 straight hours. A sport, by definition, requires PHYSICAL EXERTION --- and poker does not involve any physical exertion.

Therefore, all non-athletic skill games (e.g., chess, bridge, poker, Scrabble) are not sports. End of story.

This thread again? No. It's not a sport. Monopoly board game, Risk board game are skill games too that have WAY less variance than poker. So therefore, are they sports?

If I can sit on my ass all day and can beat Phil Ivey on random days, then no, it's not a sport. And I can beat Phil Ivey when I get better cards or if I get really lucky.

There are way many hobbies and activities out there to be considered a sport.

Poker is indeed a game that requires skills but never a sport.

Anyone can join wsop, WPT, any pro poker tournament. All it requires is money. My grandma can join WSOP, WPT, etc if they want.

Can my grandma join NBA, MLB, NFL, NHL? No.
