As for merit, for my money, Gus is in an awkward spot kind of like Frankie Edgar or Joseph Benevidez - it's pretty clear he's better than everyone else in the division (now that Rumble is gone), but he's always going to lose to the champ.
I do not agree with your statement. He is the only fighter that's been really close to beaten Jones, in fact, I think he did (to me he won 3 rounds in that fight). And he lost because Jones connected that spinning back elbow... otherwise he would have won it easily. So, I don't see how you can be so sure he'll always lose to the champion.

Main Card for this weekend looks very promising, not just the main event but all 5 fights, especially Gadelha vs Kowalkiewikz and Silva vs Medeiros.

I think people at the time got way to carried away about how Gus was able to land a few punches, defend a few takedowns and put some cuts on Jones. Combine that with the fact that everyone seems to hate Jones, and it had people complaining that Gus was somehow robbed, or claiming that he won three rounds.

Here's the MMA Decisions page for the fight: http://mmadecisions.com/decision/4518/Jon-Jones-vs-Alexander-Gustafsson

In addition to the official scorecards there's 15 media scorecards from the day of the fight, only one of which managed to find a win for Gus. Hell, four of them had it 49-46 Jones, which I think is more defensible than 48-47 Gus.

I almost can't believe this is still being "debated" almost four years later. I understand people wanting Gus to win that fight, wishing that he had, whatever. But if you're objective about it, it was a clear Jones win.

Belfort benefitting from some home cooking with the judges there methinks.

Also: Belfort is an idiot. He could have gotten a huge push for this as his "final fight" in front of a home crowd, but instead he sabotaged himself as soon as promotion started by claiming he wanted to fight again. So stupid...

I had four small underdog bets on this card, went 1/4 for a small loss (won on Kelleher, missed on Wallhead, Eduardo and Bamgbose)

Holy hell Max Holloway! :eek::eek::eek:

Love that he won. Was really hoping he would call out Conner (even though I know Conner is never going back to 145). So I guess we get Holloway - Frankie next?

Edgar the next two division champion ? I would like to see him win the 145 lb belt just so he can go for that third.

I'd be surprised if Edgar managed to beat Holloway. Plus his time is very rapidly running out - I know he looked good against Yair, but he's got a lot of miles on the clock and the drop off is gonna come, sooner rather than later.

Agree. I think Holloway likely holds the title for a bit anyway.

Just need to see the best of the entire UFC company, and I do not think it's McGregor, I think the best is Jon "Bones" Jones, who will have to fight again at UFC 214 against Cormier. I think Jony is the best of the whole company and he will continue being, removing the car accident that he had and that he was caught consuming cocaine at a party.

Oh come on, this is gonna be fun!

Well... the fight itself might not be. But the circus leading up to it should be entertaining.

Shots already fired BTW, Conor posted a pic of himself next to Floyd Mayweather SENIOR when announcing the fight: http://www.mmafighting.com/2017/6/1...egor-boxing-match-set-for-aug-26-in-las-vegas

You're not wrong, it's gonna be an exciting build up and there's going to be an insane amount of hype surrounding this fight.

I'm sad because after this fight will reportedly pass the $500,000,000 mark I don't see McGregor returning to the UFC win or lose, why on earth would he? He can retire at 28 as the highest earning MMA fighter of all time and former UFC 2 weight champion who also fought in what could be the highest selling PPV fight ever. The only reason I could see him perhaps return is to fight in that massive arena in ireland (I forget the name) that he's always talked about. But even then... who against? McGregor is motivated solely by money and what name is gonna bring in more $$$ than Floyd Mayweather?

I guess it all comes down to exactly how much money this fight generates...

Croke Park is the Irish stadium he's apparently always wanted to fight at. It normally seats 73,500, probably more for an MMA fight when they'll have just the tiny octagon in the middle and more seats on the pitch. The UFC's previous record was 56,214 for the Rousey-Holm card at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne Australia.

Random aside: I was at that event, and a stadium is the absolute worst place to try to watch an MMA event. You can hardly tell what the tiny little ant people in the cage are doing unless you watch the video on the big screens... and then you may as well be watching in a bar or at home.

Anywho, Croke Park was never going to work earlier in his career because of the time zones: for an event there to be in prime time for the USA they'd have to start the card after midnight local time in Ireland, and IIRC they couldn't get a permit to hold an event there in the middle of the night.

The way they've gotten around that in the past is either used friendlier timezones (the Rousey event in Australia happened Sunday afternoon local time), MAKE the fighters wait until 4.00am to fight (I think this is what they did for the Gustafsson-Johnson card in sweden) or book it so the card airs on a Sunday or some other non-standard time in the US.

I don't think they've ever done the last one for PPV, only for FS1 or Fight Pass cards without much star power on them.

Maybe McGregor would bring in enough money to overcome the logistical problems... and breaking the UFC's all-time attendance record on his home turf feels like a thing he'd probably like to do.

I'll be surprised if Conor can last 12 rounds versus Mayweather.

What do you think is going to give then: his chin or his cardio?

Cardio followed by his chin. He was gassing out from 5 rounds with Nate Diaz. I can only imagine him going 12 rounds with one of the best defensive boxers ever.

They're differently length rounds obviously but yeah, I tend to agree. This is going to be a massive test of his cardio if he can't get Floyd out of there early - and his chances of doing that aren't exactly great.

Conor will go wild for 4/5 rounds and gas and then Floyd will pick him apart for a UD. If it goes outside 5 rounds McGregor has approximately 0% chance of winning this fight.

Yeah I really don't see how Conor wins a decision in this fight.

He did prove in the second Diaz fight that he's capable of following a game plan that conserves his gas tank, even if he has to fight contrary to his instincts to do it. So I'd be surprised if he's completely shot after 15 minutes. But going all 36 is gonna be tough.

Conor going 12 rounds against Floyd ... never going to happen. Conor has one chance. An early KO. And it is very very very unlikely to happen. I have a better chance of winning the lottery and I haven't even bought a lotto ticket.

Imagine if Conor somehow managed to KO Floyd early on. It would be intense. Then imagine the revenue a rematch would make.

So that's pure hyperbole - Conor has a very real non-zero chance of knocking Mayweather out early, none of us should be shocked if it happens.

It's certainly not the most likely outcome for the fight, but it's a lot more possible than you're making it out to be.
