The only note I keep taped to my monitor is from a fortune cookie I got months ago. It says:

If you can't accept losing, you can't win.

That's some ancient Chinese wisdom right there.

Not like it was out of character for the guy. First time he 3bets in 420 hands, and he's got bullets. Why he checked the flop after hitting his trips, though, I don't understand.

And then 4betting the turn with a pair of kings on the board? Who knows what that's all about.

I wasn't saying it was out of character for him, I was poking fun at WV for set mining when the guy obviously had AA. But he knew he was gonna hit quads so it's all good.

Lol just realized I have notes on the guy that came in 3rd in the Full Tilt Record Breaker

"Donkfish 5 bet all in with K-7o
stacks with bottom pair 30BB deep"

$23,000 later, who's the donkfish?

I've said it b4, but this time im serious. I havent won a dime in over 3 months. I tilt like no ones business, its not fun anymore, I throw temper tantrums when I lose, it causes stress in my life. I hate to lose more than anything else in the world. I could literally care less about the $$$. Its the losing that gets me so bad and causes me to rage.

In poker you have to accept that you are going to lose a lot of the time and I've finally realized, after a year and half, that I will never ever come to accept that. Even when I was winning and profiting hugely I still screamed and threw shit around whenever I lost (didnt matter if it was 10NL, 25NL, or 200NL).

I dunno, it just seems pointless to keep doing something that stresses me out so bad especially now that I dont win anymore cuz the tilt/rage has gotten so out of control.

/rant

I'm pretty familiar with this. I know exactly how you feel and it definitely sucks that you're feeling that way, but you gotta do what you gotta do. I don't really scream too much anymore when I play, but I do get really upset sometimes and it just affects my mood more than I'd like it to. Do you find it affects other areas of your life? Like being in a shitty mood for the entire day if you run bad? You definitely need a break at the very least. I was just thinking how brutal this game can be mentally and how I don't know if I can handle it. Sometimes it just really doesn't seem worth it.

Maybe I'm glad I don't play for a significant amount of money... I basically don't tilt and I don't really get upset for more than a few minutes after I lose.

:( Well you have to do what's best for you bw, in the end it's not worth it to kill yourself even if you win money while doing it. Good luck :frown:

Isn't set mining when you know someone has AA the best time to do it?

Honestly, all I knew is that his range was likely very strong but I figured since I min bet he might do this with a hand as weak as AKs. ;)

Yeah I got ya, and I was just kidding because you're absolutely right. I call there all day in that spot. You underrepped your hand pf by min-raising so it's possible he might have raised you with worse. And of course I don't mind the call because it's KANGS and who's ever folding that pf, right???

If you can't accept losing, you can't win.

That's some ancient Chinese wisdom right there.

...and some modern American wisdom: "Remember - to win at poker, you have to be very good at losing" - Tommy Angelo, inside the cover of my copy of his book.

@ bw: it just might be in your best interest to quit. I've had a similar problem for my entire career as well; the mental side. I really think it's an ego thing that gets us so frustrated when we lose, when in reality we're usually making expected value with those spots.

You're a really smart dude though and can definitely go places with this game. I mean nevermind high stakes or whatever; if you can eek out a solid winrate at 100nl or 200nl long-term with decent volume, that's essentially a career right there. I feel the same about a bunch of us here at CC. But only you can really assess how much the losing part of poker affects you, and if it truly is ****ing you up that much then by all means leave the game. But I do believe you can make it far and are well on your way to doing so.

Depending on how you look at it, I'm on a 150k hand breakeven/100k hand losing stretch since Feb. that has my confidence pretty shot too. I'm pretty sure I've had as much, if not more trouble controlling my emotional state as you have, but I've managed to overcome lots of it and I really see myself as a mentally weak person, so I know you could do the same.

Anyways like I said you still have tons of potential in this game, and unless the game is really truly -lifeEV, I think you should consider giving it one last shot.

Quick question. You have 59k in chips in a MTT your playing. The next closest has ~40k ish. You get AKo in EP and raise 5x to 1.5k.

You have a 23k stack that moves AI behind you. It all folds around to you, what do you do?

Additional note: This is your second hand at the table, so no reads. Also, there are 30 left in a very top heavy payout structure.

Any of you guys willing to jot down some thoughts on deepstack postflop play? I turn into a trembling mass of jello whenever effective stacks get to 180BB or more.

Here's my problem - I understand the logic of playing more speculative hands in position when you're deep - but I end up throwing them away so often that I feel like I'm just throwing money away. I'm sure I'm "playing w scared money", cuz I feel like I'm going to get ch/r'd all the time - I'm mentally not dealing well with betting into the pf raiser when he checks, whether the board is dry or not. For whatever reason, this doesn't bother me at less than 150 BB's.

I don't change any of my bet sizing postflop due to deep effective stacks, but I do flat preflop in position more often when I'm deep.

BW I dont think you should quit, you were one of the top players at 100nl for a few months and you could be making a nice income from the game.

However instead of putting grinding hours in or improving your game, try and put some mental work in on your game. I know Taylor has had some help with his mental game as he had tilt issues or w.e. but it seems to have worked for him from his blog.

Also take a break you may come back refreshed and ready again but if its ****ing your life up so much definately take a break and figure out why you get so stressed and get to terms with "Remember - to win at poker, you have to be very good at losing" because it happens to every single poker player.

GL dude

-Position becomes even more important.
-3-bet more.
-4-bet more.
-Semi-bluff more with draws to the nuts.
-Don't stack off with 1 pair when your opponent is cramming money in.
-Stop getting all in preflop with AK & JJ (6-max). Have a good reason for getting in QQ.

i probably snap call, expecting to see a lot of worst aces and some mid-high pocket pairs. ur the big stack, ppl tend to play back a lot more against the big stack

July is cursed, imo.

High variance break-even for the last 60k hands or something. But most of it is me learning to play 6max and not really adapting properly yet.

Thanks Pantin :) I did call and he had QQ. I ended up rivering a straight on him and he bitched at me for about 15mins. I stood by my call tho
