I have a question, it is obvious that most people ask you this but what is the first thing one should do to become a poker pro, that is to say:

1. Study poker

2. Play poker

3. Study and practice

And finally, what do we study or what are the best ways to study and what are the best ways to study?

Jeff you didnt answer my queston??
I hate finding a specific hand in he ACR replayer it is almost IMPOSSIBLE.
I have downloaded GYAZO
With just a quick ctr+alt+c I can snapshot anything on the screen.
GYAZO has many drawbacks to it WHEN compared to a "WORKING USE-ABLE REPLAYER"
I think the best way would be to just record your entire play fmv style and just remember time stamps for certain hands

Yeah but I wanted the replayer for YouTube videos but now I can use my hud that's good enough. Not exactly what I wanted but good enough.

Trying extremely hard to stay positive

I’m trying my hardest to stay positive while playing poker. It seems whatever I do I cannot win. It literally doesn’t matter what hands I play, how much of a favorite I am, I just CANNOT WIN at any consistent rate for it to translate into anything meaningful. I signed up to acr a few years ago. When I first started it was amazing. It seemed I was making a deep run every other day. This lasted for a few months and words cannot stress enough how much of a cliff dive it’s been ever since. I’ve played so many tournaments where I’ve entered the reg ending w a top 10% stack, too many times and yet 9/10 times I’ll either get coolered non stop until I’m out, or get 2-6/7j basically every hand until I blind down and have to shove. I just don’t understand how someone can consistently dominate ENTIRE open regs and then once it ends and approaches the money, it’s like a switch goes off. I’ll run the top 1% of my hands into the top .9% of my opp hands. Jus a quick stat and i know I sound like a complete fish but can you please help me understand how I can win kk and aa all in pre flop at less then 25%? Every time I’ve manually kept track it’s never been higher than that. I just went 8/83 all in pre while being ahead 56 of them. Last time I tracked I went 3/47. I know this isn’t a large sample size but I can assure you this is basically how I run on a day to day basis pretty much. I usually stop keeping track because it’s too discouraging to focus on such negative things. But it’s like it doesn’t matter how hard I try. Or how good I get my money in. It’s just a total disaster. Today alone I lost both kk I had to qq. Got it all in on the flop turn 3 times against a gut shot and lost to all 3 of them. Anything I’ve ever kept track was never a higher win rate then 50%. I’ve tracked flopped two pairs/sets. It’s astonishing how many four card flushes and straights I see when I have two pair+ The amount of times I chop pots are EASILLLLYYY 5 to 1 when I’m ahead compared to when I’m behind. I understand variance. I understand this can happen. But at what point does it stop? It it’s insane how pure I’ll run in any tourney w a less than 100$ top prize. It’s pathetic. I watch ppl stream and it’s like I have to watch a bad beat compilation to ever see what I go through in one day in one sitting. I’m sure I’ll get trolled but I’m being serious. I can’t win when I’m ahead. I can’t win when I’m behind. Just bleeding money. And the worst part is I’m playing correct. Would never complain about losing hands I’m behind in. But when you basically lose 40/50 hands while being ahead 35 of them. Day after day. For months and months. Until you bink tourney. And then it’s like it comes back 1000x harder. How many times do things have to happen before it’s no longer a coincidence

I believe they did this and PH made an epic come back and took it down! But again in a short sample, 1,2,3 even 25 heads up matches can you really know who is better? There is so much short term variance it really would be hard to tell. I know Doug is a heads up specialist however and although not in his best form from his peak grinding days I think you would have to take Doug in this format who is regarded as one of if not the best in the world (at his peak).

How to sniff out a bluff

Hey Jeff,
I was curious how to sniff out a bluff. When my hand is one pair or two pair and I am put to the test with an all in shove I often fold. This is because I put my hand on a chip value and if it goes over that value I get a bad feeling that I might be beat. However, There is no way that I am beat every time. Thus, I am curious to hear how I might be able to avoid getting bluffed.

Thanks,
John

Hello how are you? I would recommend cash games to start micro stakes. Tournaments are great but lot of variance and are much less consistent!

Hey I am not sure on 888 and what their terms and conditions are or what you may have violated. Lifetime ban seems intense! Wish you the best and hope it gets resolved!

Hi

Hi Jeff. What would you say is the best method of maintaining consistency once you get into a winning rhythm?

Great question! I think it is important to remain balanced and keep variance in mind. Not getting to excited when this happens is key, also to not get into expectation way of thinking. I am a big believer in the "never walk away from a heater mentality". When you are running and playing well, get in as much volume as can. If the opposite is going on, makes sense to take a step back and take a breather/break and shift the mojo!

I think understanding GTO is great. This is not what I would recommend focusing on for a beginning player however. Once you get a good understanding of the basics and how to be a winning exploitative player then this makes sense to venture into!

One way to sniff out a bluff is to think about an opponents range and your perceived range and then think about what they are representing. Bet size in relation to the pot is extremely important as well as making reads based on what you have seen from the opponent. Making a big fold and getting bluffed isn't a huge deal but you def do not want to make a habit of over folding. As a good rule of thumb w/ a hand of 2 pair or better in a lot of spots I wouldn't be folding much with the exception if the board has 4 to a straight or flush for example. A good indicator too is if you have a blocker or reverse blocker that can be used to your advantage. For example if you have a key card in what the opponent is representing and you have a pair with it or a semi strong hand this is a good time to call. For example:

You have KdQs

the board is : QdJs5d.8d.3c

If your opponent is betting very strong and representing a flush but you have the Kd and a top pair this is a spot where I would lean on calling as it's a lot less likely he has a strong flush with you having the Kd and also top pair.

I would again suggest cash games but think you are on the right track asking between sng and cash tables (not mentioning mtt which is much higher variance). SNG I am really not sure the current landscape and how those are at the moment.

How often do you fold a semi strong hand like KJ in early position because of a raise, and then absolutely smash the flop with the nuts and wish you had peeled? Happens to me sometimes but with way worse holdings like 78s flopping a full house while its folded.

I have a more conservative playing style, I try to play more in position and with strong hands,
but I take a lot of beds and it irritates me a lot.
