The exact number is obvoiusly difficult to know among other things because of variance. But yeah it is probably only 5-10%, who are long term winners. Those 5-10% tend to play way more than average though. So when you play, you will be facing more than 5-10% opponents, who are long term winners. Or to put it another way: Fish tend to play for a while, lose for a while, and then most of them stop playing. A few takes the time and effort to improve their game, and then they become winning or break-even regulars.
I think so too!

For now I am one of these 95% losers.
However I intend to be a good poker player, I'm watching several hours of pro players analyzing hands and explaining actions, I intend to start betting real money soon. But anyway I agree with you, the vast majority of players only LOSE and Lose, like a gamble..:D:D
You need to study more, to be ready for real money action. Watching several hours of pro players will do nothing , compare to whats out there. Just suggestion.

Is it accurate that 96% of online poker players lose money? I have seen several users on this forum in several threads throwing this statistic around. I would like to know if there is any basis for it; what study or source is this 96% figure based on?

And if you do not agree, what do you figure the statistical breakdown is amongst winners, break even players and losers? Thanks! 5️⃣
I would assume it's close to this from the sharkscope entries I've seen, particularly if you're including live players in the overall stats. I would imagine if you were interested a quick search would return some studies on average player win/loss ratios across online poker clients based on Sharksope data. I'm not sure if/how you could track win/losses for live players in this without some sort of self-reporting, but online player trends should be a good indicator.

The more shocking thing is the number of 'regulars' who are down significant sums over their life time. I've seen a number of graphs on GG alone with 20K-30K losses over a 3000-5000 game sample at a $10-$15 ABI.

I can't really say if that figure is right or not. but the real one cannot be that far for sure. It's only an elite that makes money in this game on a regular basis.

I guess we need to set the time window... In the long run, I believe it will probably align with the statistics, but on a daily basis, the variance would easily dominate.

all players lose completely, poker is a game where only poker links win because they get 10% of each player

It seems to me that this statistic is approximately correct, only the best win, and there are not so many of them, I often get into 96% of the losers.

I'm not sure.
Usually more 10,000 people gather at the big tournaments where they play for huge sums of money.
Obviously, the number of people with a positive balance is much smaller, but there are certainly many people who make a living from it.

I'm pretty sure we'll never know an honest answer on this but I don't think it's as bad is 96% losing. Personally I wouldn't be surprised if somewhere between maybe 8% and 15% are winners or slight winners maybe another five to 10% break even slight losers and there will be the rest that are just losing money. I just don't think it's 96% it's just too high and the game wouldn't survive if that many people were losing.

It depends! If the game format is Spin & Go, then the margin should be even a little tighter, perhaps between 2% and 3% of players.

I think that for me, a good relationship that I try to make is the value I lose and the good use I can make of the moments I gain.

I'm sure of one truth: for someone to win money at poker, someone else has to lose. This is a fact! Pker doesn't give anyone money. Playing poker is just an interesting and smart way to transfer funds.

The truth is I never started looking for the real percentages. But I imagine most players lose money.

the 96% figure may be an exaggeration, it highlights the reality that the majority of online poker players do lose money. A more realistic estimate might be that about 70-80% of players lose, 10-15% break even, and 10-20% are profitable in the long run. These numbers emphasize the importance of continuous learning and strategic improvement for anyone looking to be successful at online poker

all players lose completely, poker is a game where only poker links win because they get 10% of each player

Or one might consider them all to be 'winners' because they're able to enjoy themselves playing a game they love while in the comfort of their own home. AND they even have the opportunity to make money at it IF THEY CHOOSE TO.

Unless of course 'they' play hundreds upon hundreds of low value, huge entrant number freerolls where the game doesn't even resemble what you'd see being played at the lowest of buyin limits. Yes then I'd partially agree with you.

This sounds accurate to me.
I would suggest that 4% or less are using it as a source of income & 96% are not. (there's obviously a big difference between a 'winning player' or one who is winning enough that it becomes one of their main sources of income).
