Hi Ryan,
my question is did i play this wrong? So i am playing the 100k freeroll on PS, first place is a 5200.00 ticket, there is about 285 left out of 36 000 or so, next pay advance is at 195 wich is a 55.00 ticket. I have 410,000 chips blinds i think are at 50 000 for BB so with the blinds and antes close to 100k. Here is my hand and toughts on why i played it that way. I am get KQ diamonds in UG+1. So i look at the stacks of my opponents,3 of them have less chips then me, 2 of them have about 40k more then me and 2 have over a million. Here is my tought, i have a good hand, if i raise 2.5 BB, i will be almost pot committed and if i fold, i wouldn't be left with much. So i taught what if i go all in, still have enough chips to make it hard to call an all in from early position. So i went all in, every one folded but the BB who called me with AJ off and he won.

My odder question is the AJ off call here a good one? Just wondering cause i always fold AJ to an early all in raise from early position from a descent stack.
8bb and ep, definitely jamming.

AJ off is a call if you shove correctly.

Snapshove.com has propper shoving/calling ranges.

I am really enjoying reading through this thread and getting to read your thoughts on the variety of topics that are brought. I joined upswing poker last night and will be reviewing some of the other sites you mentioned.

I appreciate your time and insight you give to the forum.

Do you or did you ever play sng's? If so what are your thoughts on sng's vs tournaments? I assume you prefer tournaments (and I do too) but curious to know what your experience playing sng's has been.

I played 45 and 180man sngs back in the day. Was a great way to practice and to cut back on variance.

Ask me anything tournament poker related that doesnt involve a specific hand!

Topics like: Theory questions, studying questions, mindset, game selection, bankroll management, staking industry, sites to play on, software and tools, etc.

If you'd like my input on a handhistory please post it in the designated area of the site and I'll happily give my input!

Two questions...

1. For a person with a general understanding of poker what has the greatest learning curve. Tourney or cash play?
2. I am a small winning poker player when playing live and a small losing/break player when playing online. I consider myself a student of the game and would love your advice on how to become better faster at the game. Ie. how much of my poker time each week should be studying poker vs. at a table vs. going through hands with other thinking players. Where should a above average/intermediate poker player be going to learn how to play winning tourney poker.

Cheers,
Josiah

1. Tourneys have more complexity, but cash games have better average players.

2. 1:1

cheap way to study:Watch streamers like Lex, Tonkaa, Kevin, Iregption, DramaticDegen, Jcarver.

Faster and better but cost $$: RunItOnce watch videos in their learning paths, upswingpoker also good.

Best content but most $$:Raiseyouredge masterclass.

Study lots, use good brm, play good volume, game select well. Review your own play often (Pokertracker4)

I usually don't play live tournament just because the structures are limited by tables, space etc. I think the online tournaments are a better value. I usually get high to lower my anxiety...is it frowned upon to be high at the table live tournaments? Both in terms of behavior and maybe Mary J odor? Would you get the police called on you? Get asked to leave by the floor staff? Are there wsop rules against this?

Ok, so I have recently been studying the different ranges based on player types and using the HUD better. I can already see a difference in my game, but I am in the very early stages. I played in the cardschat Boss freeroll last night. I didn't sleep well the night before, so I was already not at the top of my game. The first two or three tables, I was running well. Pretty much every hand I played, my read was on. If I was heads-up, I was ahead before the flop. Then, I got too attached to reading the opponent and let the rest of my game go out the window. Part of it is just the learning curve, part of it was not enough brain power because of the rest factor. Since, I am still in the early stages of learning, I know that what I do know is not automatic yet. So, that got me to thinking. Do you feel like you have more of an advantage in longer tournaments due to some of your skill set being almost automatic at this point? I would think it would definitely be a huge advantage if grinding at cash games, but since you prefer tournament play, I was curious if you felt that would apply to you.

Doing pot in states where it is legal and then playing is obviously fine. Just don't smoke and then drive, and be polite about odors (not everyone enjoys the smell).

In other states; I'd always be very careful.

Having your game fundamentally strong is advantageous in many ways, being able to play long hours and to tilt less are 2 main points it helps with.

Consistently growing your game will help immensely!

Hi Ryan,
Do you play PlO or PLO8? Do you limp sometimes because if i bet preflop always had lunatics who reraise whit nothing and made big pot, and on end you lose with better cards.

Wow. Hey there Ryan, this thread is deep, I'm gonna skim through all the pages. I'm glad I saw this, amateur online player started playing freerolls around 10 years ago, black friday. I moved back to Ethiopia 7 years ago, there was a big gap where I forgot about poker. I got back into it started playing freerolls again, on CC, took some shots. I've always felt that I needed a bigger bankroll than my old $20 deposits so I went on a whim to Kenya & played some 1/2 & 5/10, I was up a bit but variance caught up & I've since been back. I'm heading to Mauritius for the circuit & specifically for their casino Deepstack tournament which I'm nerved up about since it will be my first 500 Euro tournament Main event, so wanted to ask how to deal with these mostly "Island" live poker playing people to grab 1st place? :/ Should I play ABC & mix it up late? Would like to play an optimal strategy to make min cash & win :p Have my cake & eat it too because that would be a great result as well. This thread is amazing & thanks for this even though I have to google you now :D

SHOW OR NOT

That's some resume there protential. so its personal preference I think but I haven't heard from a pro there input.
in a hand where there is not a show down everyone folds to your raise or on your continuation bet.

I will show. thought being I play pretty tight. after seeing me win some show downs with strong hands and showing strong hands on raises. my bluffs later in the turny, are less likely to be called.

I hear a lot say no no never show never give that info.
your thoughts sir.

I look at how soft the field is, how much it is relative to what I normally play, and decide if it is worth the large variance in playing it.

PLO and PLO8 are 2 of the games in which limping preflop is completely ok in, especially in early position.

Play carefully aggressive.

Open loose, lots of small cbets, but play tight against aggression.

Easiest way to do well in soft local tourneys.

Best of luck!

This is a good way to build a tight image, and then to abuse it when the money matters more.
