People in the UK rag on the BBC a lot without understanding that it's quite easily one of the best if not the best news broadcaster in the world.

If they came over here they wouldn't, bloody adverts EVERY 5 or 10 minutes. I watched more on the Olympics on the lappy thanks to auntie beeb. BTW, excellent job by Roger Daltrey, not bad for a 68 yr old.

Just finished watching the closing ceremony and, well, my emotions are all over the place. I'm actually feeling a little down atm, mainly because I'm just so disappointed it's all over. It's been an amazing games not only for Team GB, but just about everything connected with the games. From the amazing opening ceremony (granted it was a little long winded), the volunteers, the athletes, and the performances that will live long in the memory.

My favourite performances include Bradley Wiggins in the cycling time trial, couldn't stop watching the amazing performances by the cycling track athletes both female and male, which we actually dominated. The rowing was again a strong area from the british, and we did really well in the boxing inc the infectious Nicola Adams, and Taekwondo. More amazing performances from the inhuman Usain Bolt and the ever likeable Mo Farrah.

But there are 2 performances that stand out for me, Gemma Gibbons for team GB in the Judo.... she won through to the medal final beating the french world champion guaranteeing her at least a silver medal with a throw virtually in the last seconds of the match. Clearly emotional, she looked up to the heavens and said 'I love you mum'. Everytime I see this clip I swear I get a lump in my throat. She eventually lost in the final and gained silver medal, but what was most inspiring was the fact she hadn't realised she had fought with a broken thumb.

Lastly for me was the incredible performance of Jessica Ennis. The media hype surrounding the young athlete was incredible. I cannot even begin to imagine what the pressure must have been with the weight of the whole nation's expectations on her shoulders. I feared it may have been too much for her, but she didn't disappoint. She was absolutely fantatsic and as she destroyed the whole field in the last event, you could see all the emotion and pressure just come flooding out as she crossed the line. Again another lump in your throat, hairs on the back of your neck type moment.

Amazing times for this nation! Lets hope the legacy continues for years to come.

Very well said Jag, I'm feeling the exact same way. The way this country has been the past 17 days has been just incredible and I'm so proud of everyone involved and of our country.

The opening ceremony was amazing. Going crazy for Mo Farah and Jess Ennis, her tearing up on the podium and then her brilliant smile. Gemma Gibbons gets me every time. Our dominance on the track was astounding and shows what we're capable of. Some amazing athletic performances from all over the world and the volunteers and support have been incredible.

Let's hope everything good from these games lasts and really makes a difference in our country. We've seen how Great we can be.

Cool post Jag, know what you mean about the lumps. I'm in a fortunate position in so much as my mom was English, my Dad was Polish and i'm married to and living in canada and a Canadian, so I have three countries to cheer for. 20 yrs ago I moved to Canada, so wasn't aware of current UK elite athletes. My memories are of Seb Coe, Steve Cram, Steve Ovett, Brendan Foster and Daley Thompson ect. The Brirish 'team' has been magnificent, Jessica Ennis could inspire a turnip to do better ( even if she is from Yorkshire, lol. I'm Red Rose County ), I was sure in both races, especially the 5000m, that Mo was gonna get passed, yet he dug in and dug in. So many events the UK ruled, boxing, cycling, sailing, rowing. I can tell you one thing, an athlete places more pressure upon themselves, than any nation, press, TV or commentator can do. As for the legacy, it will continue for generations, as for the throat lumps, me and the Mrs broke down at the immortal words or Dr Jacques, " I call upon the youth of the World, to assemble 4yrs from now", that's a hair on the back of your neck moment. Cry every time I hear it, no lump, just tears !

Now im a little bit cynical on things in this world (no!, really?) but i loved it, not one day went by with me thinking - oh god not more olympics and that must mean something.

Each day was a new chance for a new star to shine, another performance to stand out or a memory created.

Yes, we may be biased here (in UK) but of course we are, im sure each country concentrated on their own people, as is to be expected, but i feel the country as a whole whilst supporting Team GB also appreciated the efforts put into and performances produced by all nations.

Just look at the marathons for example, no GB runners at the front, but those who were there got the cheers just as much as anyone else.

The coverage has been great, fantastic and a great surprise - (digital tv & satellite was made for this) every sport covered, every goal, hurdle, jump, point or step was there to be seen.

The opening ceremony created a buzz that let us know that something new and different was about to happen - the closing one was a big end of term party - a couple of off tracks on the turntable but no one really minds - even the Brazillian part looked a little anaemic to the fun being had.

Just a few notes i couldn;t let pass -
The Kaiser Chiefs never will be or even come close to being The Who (as Roger & co proved later),
Freddie Mercury can still rock it even now ;)
Seeing Liam Gallagher singing the Oasis classic 'Wonderwall' i felt Noel missed out big time by not being there.

And i think that says it all really - you missed out big time by not being there.

Who mentions the Beijing shows now?, Beat that Rio :)

What was the deal with Noel not being there? I know the two don't speak much now, but I was surprised Beady Eye got the nod over Noel and his new band.

I guess their differences are bigger than the Olympics - this coming from the man who rused to Number 10 to shake Blairs hand

Very interesting two weeks!
Well Done, Brits!

Opening ceremony
Saw some chatter even in the weeks before, How could Britain top the Chinese? Had a look at both of them, and IMHO the British WAS better than the Chinese in many respects. Maybe it was just that I could better recognize the story they were telling, dunno. Nobody can beat the Chinese at robotic precision, but the Brits told a better story ... the forging of the Olympic rings in the foundry was Fantastic. Fit right into the storyline.
Both shows were Great... equal but different!

Media coverage
Discovered long ago that the Limeys are World Champs at sports coverage. Even events shown on Swedish tv, I look for an online feed from BBC or Sky. Far superior to Swedish or US tv. If you watched the Yank sport of basketball on BBC, you'd throw rocks at NBC!
Is it true that during the opening ceremony, NBC cut out a 5 min segment commemorating the victims terrorist attacks in London, and showed an interview with Phelps instead?

The games
Don't think I've ever really seen velodrome / track cycling before, but once they explained what was going on I found it Facinating! A lot more entertaining than I would have thought beforehand; a very tv-friendly sport! Looked forward to that every day and was sorry to see it end. Now won't see it again for four years ... poop.
Saw some great ball games; handball, volleyball and some very good basketball games, tho few of those had Yanks playing in them. US may still be best, but the rest of the world is catching up very quickly, at least in men's competition. How many foreign players are there in the NBA?
The men's basketball final was better than expected. Knew Spain could and hopefully would put up a good fight. Tho the end result was as expected.
The Russian men's volleyball team just doesn't know when to give up! Down for the count twice and came back both times.
Silver medal to the Swedish men's handball team. YaY team! Underdogs in the final but anyway put up a good fight. Well done!

Can't say that I like all the new(er) so-called Olympic sports. BMX? Shouldn't things like that be in the X-Games (or whatever they are called)? And why does men's beach volleyball even exist? What's the point of it? Saw an article that FIFA wants to bring beach soccer into the Rio games. Please No ...
Skateboarding? Indoor windsurfing?

Medals
Congrats to all who participated! Getting to compete in the Olympic Games ... that's more than what I ever got ...
Congrats to all the medal winners! sweden got a few. Lisa Norden missed the gold in the women's triathlon by 0.009 seconds! Swedes are probably still arguing that one, trying to get it called a dead heat. Won't happen.
We were bettered by both our Scandinavian neighbors, Denmark and norway. But our other neighbors, Lithuania and Poland ... well, they beat us, too. But we were light-years ahead of Taipei and Fiji, and we beat the crap out of Togo!

Heart-breaking reading of things like this. Unfortunately there will always be such stories. It's the world we live in ...

Every single person involved should be fired and banned from competitive sports for life! Prosecute, if at all possible. If you want to castrate them also, fine with me.

If you're wondering why I quote Belgo here, then you're a weak-wristed, slack-jawed girlyman !!!

Going to watch the Closing Ceremony now ...

I have a ridiculously long (approx 1,500 words lol) tl;dr of GB's games that I really don't think is appropriate for a forum and I think I might just put it in a blog or something. If people want it here then it isn't a problem, but it is very long

So here I'll round up my top 5 moments outside of Team GB

Usain Bolt - 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay

Cemented his now undoubted status as a legend (unless your name happens to be Jacques Rogge apparently). He swept away all the doubts about fitness and form and put in two stunning performances to hold off Yohan Blake in the 100m and 200m, then another alongside him to power past the United States on the final leg of the 4x100m relay in yet another exceptional world record time

It was not only his ability on the track, it was the way he held not only a stadium of 80,000 people in his hand, but seemingly the entire world. Everything stops for Usain Bolt. He is one of the few people who has truly transcended sport, a bonafide superstar, an absolute phenomenon

Usain-Bolt-and-Mo-Farah-008.jpg

Jam123N20120809RM.jpg

David Rudisha - Men's 800m

Arguably the performance of the games. A wonderfully unassuming man, he came across superbly in interviews after his victory. He showed a modesty that belied his magnificence. He said that before the final he decided to just go for it, and by god he did. It was a stunning record from his own standpoint, but further to that, he dragged the rest of the field to new heights. Behind him only one runner failed to run a personal best, while there were multiple national records. It was simply superb

USA Women's 4x100m Relay Team

Another world record performance makes it into my top five moments. The primary reason this makes it into this group is that it smashed a 27 year old record set in the an era dominated by East German athletes doped up to the eyeballs. Frankly, a huge amount of records from that period should be simply wiped off the board, that the women's team went and did it deserves a huge amount of credit.

London%20Olympics%20Athletics%20Women.JPEG-07a5d.jpg

Michael Phelps - Seemingly everything

How could this list not include Phelps? I'm one of the people who is of the opinion that the swimming events need to be scaled back significantly. However, that does not take away from the absurdity of his utter dominance. Let's face it, there's always been a lot of swimming events and nobody has been able to achieve what he has. An incredible athlete, it was fitting that his performance in his final relay race was the decisive one, leading his US team to gold

Michael-Phelps-005.jpg

And last but not least

Felix Sanchez - 400m hurdles

Sanchez makes it into the list not only because of the performance itself, but his willingness to allow the world to see what it meant to him during his medal ceremony. At 34, eight years after winning gold in Athens, after indifferent form and coming into the Games as a decidedly rank outsider. From somewhere he he pulled a series of exceptional runs together, culminating in the final where he ran 47.63s, incredibly the exact same time he recorded in 2004. But as I say, it was his reaction on the podium that puts him here. I doubt any of us could put into words the emotions he must have been experiencing, but it was an indication of just what a gold medal means

A good list, onemore! Suppose any list has to include the megastars, but glad to see you have included David Rudisha and Felix Sanchez. Worthy gold medal winners both of them!

My list would probably also have to include Hiroshi Hoketsu, Japanese, competing in Individual Dressage. At the age of 71, he says this has to be his last Olympic Games ...
His Horse is getting Too Old !!!
Gotta love that attitude!

Good post Geoff!

I thought the closing ceremony was great - every English musician ever showed up - even some dead ones lol.

England did a great job overall. One major difference I noticed is that the entire country pulled together for the events. It is like the country hosted it - not the city.

Unlike when it was held in Atlanta - it was Atlanta that hosted it - not the US. I know we are much bigger but still.

I was talking to a good friend today and we are both lost without the Olympics being finished, back to rubbish soaps, reality TV, yuck
I wasnt looking forward to the Olympics but have loved every minute of it, not just because the UK won lots of medals, I enjoy watching anyone who is at the top of their sport.
A couple of sports I would get rid of :

1: Syncronised swimming, sorry it is not a sport.

2: Fencing, a minority sport which is boring to watch.

3: Tennis The Olympics should be the pinacle of any sport involved and is winning an Olympic Gold rated higher than winning Wimbledon or the US Open etc? I think not.

4: Basketball. For the same reason and on a personal note I find it the most boring sport in the world to watch, along with baseball that is.

And did I really read that golf is going to be in the brazil Olympics? that really is a joke.

Also I found the closing ceremony a boring anti-climax. George Michael? Annie Lennox? Russel Brand????? The only bits I enjoyed were Eric Idle singing always look on the bright side of life and the Who. I thought the Brazilian presentation wiped the floor with the rest of the closing ceremony and it bodes well for the Brazil games opening ceremony. I cant wait, counting down the days. :D

First and foremost what amazing and wonderful games it was! To bad they do not last one or two weeks longer :)

It is truly so much easier to follow your favorite events this days, with all live streams.

Congrats to all the medal winners! Sweden got a few. Lisa Norden missed the gold in the women's triathlon by 0.009 seconds! Swedes are probably still arguing that one, trying to get it called a dead heat. Won't happen.

This one goes to the minus account for the organizers. There should be two finish line photos (one from each side). But one of the cameras was out of order... Since Nicola Spirigs thorax is hidden behind Lisa Norden no one can tell exactly how far from each other they where. But "Field of play" is called and congratulation to Nicola Spirigs.

So a flawed, just like showing the "Nice Korea's" flag next to football players from the "Naughly korea. [http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18993023] Or the Welsh football player listed as English :D [http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/18997930]

Sadly this is probably what I will remember the most from the 2012 Olympics. I was so looking forward to boxing this time. With women's boxing finally in and a new judging system that was intended counteract indecencies like this one...

Unfortunately now it is time for the truly deplorably. The first stripping of a medal, Nadzeya Ostapchuk in Shot put. For using a anabolic agent. [http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/19242736]

Still over all it was an fantastic event :D

Seriously? You son plays curling of all sports and you have the guts to come and piss on such physically intense, tactically complex and technically challenging sports like beach volley, water polo or field hockey? ???

OK, let the bickering begin.......

I was talking to a good friend today and we are both lost without the Olympics being finished, back to rubbish soaps, reality TV, yuck

A couple of sports I would get rid of :

1: Syncronised swimming, sorry it is not a sport.
Personally, I agree but I'm sure others hold differing opinions.

2: Fencing, a minority sport which is boring to watch.
Disagree here. One of the things I enjoy the most about the Olympics is the ability to see some coverage of sports that rarely make it onto television here in the US. There are tons and tons of Olympic sports that have a relatively small fan base. Should we ban them all?

3: Tennis The Olympics should be the pinacle of any sport involved and is winning an Olympic Gold rated higher than winning Wimbledon or the US Open etc? I think not.
Agree. But surprised Soccer didn't make your list of sports to be banned. After-all there is the matter of that little thing called the World Cup. Besides, in reference to #2 and 4, soccer takes boredom to new heights (sorry, had to get that in there;) ). But my point is valid. Different people will find different sports boring to the point of not even being able to watch them. So, if "boring" is a dis-qualifier for the Olmpics, there will be no sports left at all since no matter what sport you pick, someone will find it boring.

4: Basketball. For the same reason and on a personal note I find it the most boring sport in the world to watch, along with baseball that is.
This is an interesting case to me. On one hand, agreeing with your points above, Basketball doesn't belong, but unlike those sports you've singled-out, basketball doesn't yet have any kind of "world championships". In that regard I'd either like to see it stay an Olympic sport or move into some type of unified championships. And not simply because the US would crush at first, they would, but because it'd be good to grow the sport and the rest of the world is steadily gaining. Witness the final game v. Spain and also a few years back Barcelona, I believe, beating the Lakers. To grow the sport internationally, I think it needs some kind of international arena.

And did I really read that golf is going to be in the Brazil Olympics? that really is a joke.
Agree. IMO, golf doesn't belong for the same reasons you cited about tennis.

To add to the list,

Beach Volleyball ( just a voyuers delight )
No problem with Beach Volleyball, per se, but I'm not sure if it's more of an Olympic sport, or an X-games type sport. Traditional volleyball is definately an Olympic sport, but I could go either way on what the appropriate venue for Beach Volleyball is.
BMX biking.
Yeah, this is an example of a sport that I think clearly should be more in the X-games camp, than in the Olympics. Just like snowboarding in the winter Olympics. These are X-games sports, not Olympic sports.
Water Polo
No problem with this as an Olympic sport.
Field Hockey
Again, I have no problem with this as an Olypmic sport.
and if they are going to include golf ( which reportedly they are ) what's next? tiddly winks? spot the bent judge?

WTF NBC?
At least ONE thing we can all agree on. NBC's coverage sucked.

Blagh, blagh, blagh. The only reason to watch the Summer Olympics is the USA beach volleyball team. Need I say more!
