The really cool thing is that I still have my live poker fund.

So the question of the day is - what do I do with it?
  1. Save it for future personal fun stuff. This is what my husband wants me to do with it. It would re-plenish my casino fund many times - or I could do other things with it as well. I think he chooses this because he plays a lot of golf and me playing poker has always been the tradeoff for that. I think he feels a bit guilty that he will continue to have golf and I won't have poker anymore. (He shouldn't feel that way).
  2. Leave it in our savings account. I am going part time in May and Joe is retiring fully in Mar 2026. Our income will drop and we are trying to build a secure future. This is my first choice.
  3. Pay it towards the principle on our mortgage - our house will not quite be paid for when Joe retires. I like this option too.
  4. Use it towards upgrading my cataract surgery so that I will have near perfect vision for the first time in my life. I would no longer need contacts or glasses, except maybe reading glasses. I can get basic surgery for about $400 out of pocket but would still need low level contacts and glasses. The upgrade will cost $11k!! (and I don't have that much in my poker fund lol) o_Oo_Oo_O
  5. Use it for a great trip for me and Joe.
Joe wants me to do 1 - and still upgrade my lenses in 4. Tammy and Martin want me to do 4 too. I am dying over spending that much money this close to retirement. But the idea of perfect vision is quite appealing. My vision is VERY bad.

I know it is ultimately a very personal decision that I have to make - but I am happy to hear your advice!
$11k sounds like a lot. Maybe consider getting it done in mexico?

I only need them for reading really small print like medicine bottles
Ever wonder why:

a) the print on medicine bottles is so small, and
b) the actual directions are generally buried in some obscure spot that takes all day to find.

As for avoiding such large offline tournaments, your decision is ideal if it has provided relief for you and your budget, and I wanted to ask if you play online, or at least CardsChat tournaments? Special events, league? We used to be a good team a thousand years ago and I think a lot of people would love to meet you at the tables.
As for spending the fund, vision and eyes are almost the most important thing for a person.
I wish you health, Debi)))

What ever helps to lower your costs in the long run - maybe do that?

And I'm not talking simply about the living costs. What ever helps you to keep yourself physically and mentally functional in the years to come is the best investment in yourself.

There will come a time for all of us when I'm sure we will all have to quit or move on from live MTT's. For me iI expect it will be a sad day I hope not thou. I want it to be more like you when it comes. And just one day realize there's other things I enjoy doing more. Wishing you best and hoping you make the most of that extra free time you know have.

Cheers!!!

Oh hell no - these are my eyes! I have heard too many stories about bad experiences out of the country - not to mention my insurance would not cover it if I have complications due to using an unauthorized doctor.

I am hoping to find time to play some CC tournaments when I reduce my work hours, but the problems is all of the good ones are on the weekends when I am most busy with personal and family things. It is hard to carve out hours to spend playing tournaments.

I just made my annual fall trip to Vegas - it was a short one this time - only 6 days. I had family arriving, so I was only going to play 3 days of poker. I decided to play in the $200 dailies at the Wynn.

My first tournament was last Sunday at noon. I was excited to be playing since I got sick during my summer WSOP trip. Starting stacks were 25k - I love deep stacks. Then they announced you could pay $100 for a one-time add-on of 25k chips as long as you still have chips. (So you can't bust and then get your add-on). Surprisingly only half the table took advantage of this. I don't understand their logic if they even had any. Even the guy to my left who had won the tournament on Sat waited a while. '

So there I sat with 50k chips - a dream come true tournament for me!

After the first break it didn't take long before I was watching the clock for the next break- they were every 2 hours which is way too long for women - but women don't get to decide these things.

When there was still 25 minutes left I realized how many times they kept having to tell me the action is on me. I did not have my phone or ipad out as usual - I was just more interested in seeing how the people who walked by were dressed, looking at their shoes, etc. I knew nothing about the some of the players on my table and how they had been playing - I didn't care. The idea of playing that tournament until midnight or later was incredibly overwhelming. I didn't know how to get through the next 25 minutes.

And it hit me - I was almost anxious to be out of the tournament so I could go do something more fun. Then I asked myself why was I even playing? Out of habit was the answer. So I went all in, busted and enjoyed the rest of my time not playing poker. I see no reason to ever play again.

Live poker tournaments require an incredible amount of stamina and mental focus. I don't want to dedicate all of that to poker anymore.

It has been an incredible 20+years - so many great memories. But it is just not for me anymore. It costs me $300 to find out but now I know. :)
This happened to me too... True, these were online tournaments. After 1-2 hours I became bored and I also wondered why I needed this, I went all-in, lost and went about my business without a bit of regret that I lost.
Maybe you just need a break from poker, then you'll get bored and come back with renewed vigor.
In any case, we live to enjoy the time we spend, and if we get bored with something, it’s most likely better to give it up and find a way to spend our time in a much more interesting way.
I'm sure you spent time with your family much more interesting than sitting at the poker table😊

I agree, when it stops being fun and you can't wait to do something else, it's time to quit, that goes for everything in life, except marriage of course, your vows should never be broken.

This is very insightful and helpful! I will not get the discussion with my surgeon until early January but this is all good to know - thank you!

I have other issues with eyes as well but I don't think that will have any impact on which cataract choice I make.
It's been over a year and I still sometimes reach up to pull my glasses off when I'm not wearing any , old habits die hard

I feel somewhat the same, I had been playing for over 20 years, mostly On-line for Fun, but more seriously in Live games at local Pubs and Clubs, In fact I was so serious about playing I ran a Weekly Live game as TD for a Pub I visited regularly. I was obsessed about the game, regularly playing and even talking about Poker at every opportunity.

Then the Lockdowns hit, and closed all the Venues I visited to get my Poker Fix! That's when I found Cardschat, I believed that if I played as well as I thought I did, there would be nothing stopping me from increasing my little $200 bankroll, That I had already won from playing freerolls on pokerstars, and with the help of Cardschat and the PS Freerolls, I should be able to double it.

I surpassed my expectations and actually trebled it within a few months, Then I had a stint in hospital with my Heart condition and couldn't play much at all, even after getting out of hospital and with the Lockdowns lifted I just couldn't face going back to my old venues or even play on-line, It was like having a switch turned off, or a Fuse that had blown and I wasn't able to find the passion any more.

It's been around 4 years now and I still haven't found what I'm looking for, (Sounds like a U2 hit) but the fact remains I just cannot be bothered with the game, I believed that somehow keeping in compliance with Cardschat and visiting the site daily might ignite the passion I once had, but without much success, Then of course PS stopped the Freerolls here and I just haven't bothered to try the ones that replaced them.

I don't know how to fix this problem or whether this is my last visit to this site, but one day I will simply stop visiting Cardschat, So in case it is, let me say it was a wonderful ride while it lasted, But to all you Newbies out there, If you are serious about Poker, You won't find a better community than Cardschat, Good Luck and Adios for now.

With the basic surgery I will still need low level contacts and glasses so that makes the decision much harder for me. I want the freedom you have - just hate that it will cost me so much to get it.

You did everything right, I am also tired of any poker, but I still play. To avoid overfatigue, it is recommended to switch to different types of activities, and they should be liked and bring pleasure.

Is it a one or the other deal or can you do one now and the other later? Having just a $400 co-pay is very affordable but I have no idea if you can do one and then the other later, to me that would be something to consider. Do you have cataracts in both eyes? It was amazing how bright the colors were and I thought John's white t-shirts were yellow but they weren't-it was my eyes !!!!!! The fall foliage was brilliant, I had no idea the beauty that I wasn't seeing and have no regrets. I do know that my lenses are not the same, each one is made for 1 eye and the lenses have serial numbers LOL ! I hope whatever you decide will be perfect for you :)

Live poker is good, but when we really have time to be there, as the years go by the priorities in our life change, so I believe that everything in life has an end, I hope you consider yourself a victorious person for all the time dedicated and the learning that poker brought to your life.

They recommend doing them 2 weeks apart. I can't imagine living life with different visual ability in each eye so I will do them both. It is worse in 1 eye than the other but they will do both. (well I won't know for sure until Jan 6th but my eye doctor said there is about a 90% chance they will recommend the surgery.

Yeah, mine were 2 weeks apart and that 2 weeks was kind of fun for me because I would close my corrected eye for before and close my bad eye for the after view and it blew me away !! What I meant was, could you have surgery for 400 and then a few years later have the 11K ?

Just out of interest, what's your range of winnings over your 20+ yr premiership, if you do or don't mind answering... 😉

especially when I go part time in May.
I missed that thread . Who is going to be in charge when you go part-time?
you did very well for a long time, we had the highest paying and most often freerolls on the internet for a very long time
I would go part-time if I could think of a replacement lol.

I think you should do a combination of 1,2, and 4 lol.
for number one you need an ok bankroll on one of the poker sites, you can play SnGs when Joe is golfing
Unless you are burnt out altogether from poker and then you need another hobby, they all cost money.

for number two you need to save what you can for retirement for real, the more the better.
skip number 3 you'll have number 2 for that if needed.

number 4 is priceless, you can't have good times with anyone if you can't see well, but I would try the $400 surgery for now,
I was 20/20 for years after my regular cataract surgery and my doctor was cussing a few times during it.

LASIK should only cost a couple thousand dollars per eye; 11,000 is way too high. If you have to have it done later, they can finance that.
you have a year and a half till Joe retires, a small monthly amount toward something like gold, crypto, or stocks would help.

These are just some thoughts, but we aren't really worried.
You are a very strong and intelligent woman who doesn't need anyone to tell her anything. (maybe how to boil eggs)

I know it is ultimately a very personal decision that I have to make - but I am happy to hear your advice!

Good for you , Debi. That is one reason I liked sports gambling more than poker because sport gambling, I agreed to choose a team within 6 to 12 minutes and I would not even have to watch the game. Poker has such a time commitment and we have many friends we miss out on seeing if we make poker front and center.

I must admit that I’ve not been following you. Still, I have great respect that you after due dilligence have decided to refrain from
live poker.
Alas, online poker is not legal in America. Otherwise playing online would be a solid option. Like you I’ve been playing for more than 20 years. Started with brick and mortar poker. Around the poker boom I transferred to online poker. One could hope that legislation in the US will realize that poker shall be legal in the country with most players, let alone the country who invented modern poker. I sometimes compare the situation as if NATO were without USA.
In my country an eye operation would be be free, but if you have a good salary, you must pay 50% in income taxes. Poker winnings however is tax free.
I wish you best of luck with your future endeavours in life.

Yeah, mine were 2 weeks apart and that 2 weeks was kind of fun for me because I would close my corrected eye for before and close my bad eye for the after view and it blew me away !! What I meant was, could you have surgery for 400 and then a few years later have the 11K ?

There would be no point in that imo. If I am spending that much money now while we have full incomes is better than later when our income is less due to retirement.

Just out of interest, what's your range of winnings over your 20+ yr premiership, if you do or don't mind answering... 😉

I don't mind you asking but I don't know the answer. Online I was a loser in sng's, but definitely a winner in tournaments - had some pretty good cashes up until 2011. In live poker I had the luxury of not having to keep up with it. I rolled most of my online bankroll into live - about $8k. I did really well in my early years for sure. I still have about half of that left - but I don't know how many times I kept some of my poker winnings for other things or how many times I added a bit to the fund.
you did very well for a long time, we had the highest paying and most often freerolls on the internet for a very long time
I would go part-time if I could think of a replacement lol.

I suck at sng's lol. It was the only poker game I ever consistently lost at despite coaching, reading books, etc.

This is not LASIK - I tried to do that years ago but am not eligible due to my crappy eyes. This is cataract surgery. I have done some research and some places are slightly cheaper but this clinic I am using has one of the most reputable eye surgeons you could hope for - and another one almost as good.

Thank you for those kind words - that means a lot to me. LOL at the boiled eggs - I have burnt so many in my time. I finally got an egg boiler and it is amazing!

As for who will be in charge - I will still be around, just for less time. I primarily do other things for the company now anyway. I still devote some of my time to CC and will continue to do so, but Tammy is doing a great job of keeping things running here - and of course we have Martin too who is also amazing.

I don't think I can ever leave completely. This communithy is embedded in my heart - and tattooed on my leg lol.
