$11k sounds like a lot. Maybe consider getting it done in mexico? The really cool thing is that I still have my live poker fund.
So the question of the day is - what do I do with it?
Joe wants me to do 1 - and still upgrade my lenses in 4. Tammy and Martin want me to do 4 too. I am dying over spending that much money this close to retirement. But the idea of perfect vision is quite appealing. My vision is VERY bad.
- Save it for future personal fun stuff. This is what my husband wants me to do with it. It would re-plenish my casino fund many times - or I could do other things with it as well. I think he chooses this because he plays a lot of golf and me playing poker has always been the tradeoff for that. I think he feels a bit guilty that he will continue to have golf and I won't have poker anymore. (He shouldn't feel that way).
- Leave it in our savings account. I am going part time in May and Joe is retiring fully in Mar 2026. Our income will drop and we are trying to build a secure future. This is my first choice.
- Pay it towards the principle on our mortgage - our house will not quite be paid for when Joe retires. I like this option too.
- Use it towards upgrading my cataract surgery so that I will have near perfect vision for the first time in my life. I would no longer need contacts or glasses, except maybe reading glasses. I can get basic surgery for about $400 out of pocket but would still need low level contacts and glasses. The upgrade will cost $11k!! (and I don't have that much in my poker fund lol)
- Use it for a great trip for me and Joe.
I know it is ultimately a very personal decision that I have to make - but I am happy to hear your advice!
Ever wonder why:I only need them for reading really small print like medicine bottles
What ever helps to lower your costs in the long run - maybe do that?So the question of the day is - what do I do with it?
Oh hell no - these are my eyes! I have heard too many stories about bad experiences out of the country - not to mention my insurance would not cover it if I have complications due to using an unauthorized doctor.$11k sounds like a lot. Maybe consider getting it done in Mexico?
As for avoiding such large offline tournaments, your decision is ideal if it has provided relief for you and your budget, and I wanted to ask if you play online, or at least CardsChat tournaments? Special events, league? We used to be a good team a thousand years ago and I think a lot of people would love to meet you at the tables.
As for spending the fund, vision and eyes are almost the most important thing for a person.
I wish you health, Debi)))
This happened to me too... True, these were online tournaments. After 1-2 hours I became bored and I also wondered why I needed this, I went all-in, lost and went about my business without a bit of regret that I lost.I just made my annual fall trip to Vegas - it was a short one this time - only 6 days. I had family arriving, so I was only going to play 3 days of poker. I decided to play in the $200 dailies at the Wynn.
My first tournament was last Sunday at noon. I was excited to be playing since I got sick during my summer WSOP trip. Starting stacks were 25k - I love deep stacks. Then they announced you could pay $100 for a one-time add-on of 25k chips as long as you still have chips. (So you can't bust and then get your add-on). Surprisingly only half the table took advantage of this. I don't understand their logic if they even had any. Even the guy to my left who had won the tournament on Sat waited a while. '
So there I sat with 50k chips - a dream come true tournament for me!
After the first break it didn't take long before I was watching the clock for the next break- they were every 2 hours which is way too long for women - but women don't get to decide these things.
When there was still 25 minutes left I realized how many times they kept having to tell me the action is on me. I did not have my phone or ipad out as usual - I was just more interested in seeing how the people who walked by were dressed, looking at their shoes, etc. I knew nothing about the some of the players on my table and how they had been playing - I didn't care. The idea of playing that tournament until midnight or later was incredibly overwhelming. I didn't know how to get through the next 25 minutes.
And it hit me - I was almost anxious to be out of the tournament so I could go do something more fun. Then I asked myself why was I even playing? Out of habit was the answer. So I went all in, busted and enjoyed the rest of my time not playing poker. I see no reason to ever play again.
Live poker tournaments require an incredible amount of stamina and mental focus. I don't want to dedicate all of that to poker anymore.
It has been an incredible 20+years - so many great memories. But it is just not for me anymore. It costs me $300 to find out but now I know.
you know i just brought that up might be because of football for now but since may i have had one day played a full day like 3-4 events and was just too much mostly now even weekends im one at most and done....just 55 too much stamina needed to stay on top etc....i did goto casino and come out 240 ahead hit 2nd largest bonus on quarters lol and that was like 4 hours....didnt play live poker this time....i do like live better just takes so much out of me is a younger persons game ive always known this im sure will get the fire if live long enough to make those day long runs again though sooner or later lolI just made my annual fall trip to Vegas - it was a short one this time - only 6 days. I agree, when it stops being fun and you can't wait to do something else, it's time to quit, that goes for everything in life, except marriage of course, your vows should never be broken.I just made my annual fall trip to Vegas - it was a short one this time - only 6 days. It's been over a year and I still sometimes reach up to pull my glasses off when I'm not wearing any , old habits die hardThis is very insightful and helpful! I will not get the discussion with my surgeon until early January but this is all good to know - thank you!
I have other issues with eyes as well but I don't think that will have any impact on which cataract choice I make.
I feel somewhat the same, I had been playing for over 20 years, mostly On-line for Fun, but more seriously in Live games at local Pubs and Clubs, In fact I was so serious about playing I ran a Weekly Live game as TD for a Pub I visited regularly. I was obsessed about the game, regularly playing and even talking about Poker at every opportunity.I just made my annual fall trip to Vegas - it was a short one this time - only 6 days. Is it a one or the other deal or can you do one now and the other later? Having just a $400 co-pay is very affordable but I have no idea if you can do one and then the other later, to me that would be something to consider. Do you have cataracts in both eyes? It was amazing how bright the colors were and I thought John's white t-shirts were yellow but they weren't-it was my eyes !!!!!! The fall foliage was brilliant, I had no idea the beauty that I wasn't seeing and have no regrets. I do know that my lenses are not the same, each one is made for 1 eye and the lenses have serial numbers LOL ! I hope whatever you decide will be perfect for youWith the basic surgery I will still need low level contacts and glasses so that makes the decision much harder for me. I want the freedom you have - just hate that it will cost me so much to get it.
Live poker is good, but when we really have time to be there, as the years go by the priorities in our life change, so I believe that everything in life has an end, I hope you consider yourself a victorious person for all the time dedicated and the learning that poker brought to your life.I just made my annual fall trip to Vegas - it was a short one this time - only 6 days. Yeah, mine were 2 weeks apart and that 2 weeks was kind of fun for me because I would close my corrected eye for before and close my bad eye for the after view and it blew me away !! What I meant was, could you have surgery for 400 and then a few years later have the 11K ?They recommend doing them 2 weeks apart. I can't imagine living life with different visual ability in each eye so I will do them both. It is worse in 1 eye than the other but they will do both. (well I won't know for sure until Jan 6th but my eye doctor said there is about a 90% chance they will recommend the surgery.

I missed that thread . Who is going to be in charge when you go part-time?especially when I go part time in May.
I know it is ultimately a very personal decision that I have to make - but I am happy to hear your advice!

you did very well for a long time, we had the highest paying and most often freerolls on the internet for a very long time
I would go part-time if I could think of a replacement lol.
I think you should do a combination of 1,2, and 4 lol.
for number one you need an ok bankroll on one of the poker sites, you can play SnGs when Joe is golfing
Unless you are burnt out altogether from poker and then you need another hobby, they all cost money.
for number two you need to save what you can for retirement for real, the more the better.
skip number 3 you'll have number 2 for that if needed.
number 4 is priceless, you can't have good times with anyone if you can't see well, but I would try the $400 surgery for now,
I was 20/20 for years after my regular cataract surgery and my doctor was cussing a few times during it.
LASIK should only cost a couple thousand dollars per eye; 11,000 is way too high. If you have to have it done later, they can finance that.
you have a year and a half till Joe retires, a small monthly amount toward something like gold, crypto, or stocks would help.
These are just some thoughts, but we aren't really worried.
You are a very strong and intelligent woman who doesn't need anyone to tell her anything. (maybe how to boil eggs)
