Thanks everyone!

The things that are most important to me now are family and doing fun things with them and with my husband. Maybe I will start a trip thread as someone suggested.

I will still play the occasional CC game - especially when I go part time in May. I will have more time then to do other things. I am not leaving CardsChat - will just be working less overall. :)

My next trip will be Orlando in mid-December, then Maui in January. I will create threads for each trip next year!

I just made my annual fall trip to Vegas - it was a short one this time - only 6 days. I had family arriving, so I was only going to play 3 days of poker. I decided to play in the $200 dailies at the Wynn.

My first tournament was last Sunday at noon. I was excited to be playing since I got sick during my summer WSOP trip. Starting stacks were 25k - I love deep stacks. Then they announced you could pay $100 for a one-time add-on of 25k chips as long as you still have chips. (So you can't bust and then get your add-on). Surprisingly only half the table took advantage of this. I don't understand their logic if they even had any. Even the guy to my left who had won the tournament on Sat waited a while. '

So there I sat with 50k chips - a dream come true tournament for me!

After the first break it didn't take long before I was watching the clock for the next break- they were every 2 hours which is way too long for women - but women don't get to decide these things.

When there was still 25 minutes left I realized how many times they kept having to tell me the action is on me. I did not have my phone or ipad out as usual - I was just more interested in seeing how the people who walked by were dressed, looking at their shoes, etc. I knew nothing about the some of the players on my table and how they had been playing - I didn't care. The idea of playing that tournament until midnight or later was incredibly overwhelming. I didn't know how to get through the next 25 minutes.

And it hit me - I was almost anxious to be out of the tournament so I could go do something more fun. Then I asked myself why was I even playing? Out of habit was the answer. So I went all in, busted and enjoyed the rest of my time not playing poker. I see no reason to ever play again.

Live poker tournaments require an incredible amount of stamina and mental focus. I don't want to dedicate all of that to poker anymore.

It has been an incredible 20+years - so many great memories. But it is just not for me anymore. It costs me $300 to find out but now I know. :)
When I go to Vegas I play the $2-4 or $3-6 cash games. $400 buy keeps me busy while my wife kicks ass at slots. Just sayin.

It is certainly a formidable explanation for those who play poker and do not feel any kind of adrenaline from the game, so should those who feel with their heart.

I think you made the right choice Debi. If you're not enjoying it there's no sense in pushing yourself to do it. While we never know the future if this turns out to be your last live tournament so be it. Poker is a game that should be fun there is so much more to life. I congratulate you on making the smart choice and I'm sure many players like me may do the same sometime.

I spent a week in Las Vegas in 2022 and 2023. The first time my family came out with me somehow we got extra flight to the list and two children when the next year. I'm in my favorite playground in the world do you wanna how much poker played? Not one single on both trips. We went to shows so on the sides and even went to the Grand Canyon and you wanna know something I didn't even miss playing poker. While I was there the wsop was actually going on and I didn't care. Sometimes it's just better to take care of ourselves and enjoy other things in life. I do hope when the time comes that the game is no longer fun that I will actually be as smart as you and give it up.

Excellent decision making @Debi. Poker is a huge drain on time for all kinds of reasons, and there are definitely loads more things in life to enjoy.

Nothing in life defines who we are, sometimes the biggest/best decisions we can make are the ones that would have seemed unthinkable earlier in life.

Good luck with all your next trips, I reckon you will also find it lovely not to feel that need to try and make a poker at certain times of the year.

Understand your decision. I 'm finding online poker boring recently. Playing out of habit.
I'm trying to get myself fit so I can return to playing table tennis. At 75 I'm finding it fun but a bit fast keeping up with the younger players.:)
Hope you find plenty of other interests to pursue, enjoy your retirement.🎶🐎✔️😎🚀🤗

You will forever be one of my favorite CC cats :)
If it's your decision, ok, but I also support that next year you change your mind and jump into some big tournament... ;)
Thank you! I think if I were ever in a situation where friends wanted to play I would probably join in and enjoy it. But going on specific poker trips to play tournament after tournament is a thing of my past.
When I go to Vegas I play the $2-4 or $3-6 cash games. $400 buy keeps me busy while my wife kicks ass at slots. Just sayin.

Yea there is always the possibility I would jump in a $1-2 or $1-3 game for old time's sake but I typically don't enjoy cash games so I think it would be rare. They do have a small poker room at my favorite and closest casino now so that is a possibility if I ever make an overnight trip there again.

The really cool thing is that I still have my live poker fund.

So the question of the day is - what do I do with it?
  1. Save it for future personal fun stuff. This is what my husband wants me to do with it. It would re-plenish my casino fund many times - or I could do other things with it as well. I think he chooses this because he plays a lot of golf and me playing poker has always been the tradeoff for that. I think he feels a bit guilty that he will continue to have golf and I won't have poker anymore. (He shouldn't feel that way).
  2. Leave it in our savings account. I am going part time in May and Joe is retiring fully in Mar 2026. Our income will drop and we are trying to build a secure future. This is my first choice.
  3. Pay it towards the principle on our mortgage - our house will not quite be paid for when Joe retires. I like this option too.
  4. Use it towards upgrading my cataract surgery so that I will have near perfect vision for the first time in my life. I would no longer need contacts or glasses, except maybe reading glasses. I can get basic surgery for about $400 out of pocket but would still need low level contacts and glasses. The upgrade will cost $11k!! (and I don't have that much in my poker fund lol) o_Oo_Oo_O
  5. Use it for a great trip for me and Joe.
Joe wants me to do 1 - and still upgrade my lenses in 4. Tammy and Martin want me to do 4 too. I am dying over spending that much money this close to retirement. But the idea of perfect vision is quite appealing. My vision is VERY bad.

I know it is ultimately a very personal decision that I have to make - but I am happy to hear your advice!

Have you ever researched the option of getting the surgery abroad?

I've heard about US citizens getting surgery in Europe for less than half the money (including travel and stay in a 5 star hotel). 😳
(That was about hair transplantation though, so a different case for sure)

No - I am not that brave. I have heard horror stories and I will not take chances with my eyes. Plus if there are complications insurance (Medicare) would not cover that since I didn't use an authorized provider.

Definitely understandable for sure. 👍🏻

Not sure if I could do it either. 🙊

I would do the $400 cataract surgery because you will be grateful for it every day. When i had mine done last year I was given the choice of seeing up close or seeing at a distance and using reading glasses for up close. The doctor said to pick the distance lens if I wanted to be able to drive without glasses or pick the up close if I spent all day doing desk work and driving wasn't important. I LOVE being able to see without glasses for the 1st time in 50 years, I am typing this on my desktop with no glasses required, I only need them for reading really small print like medicine bottles or grocery label fine print. For the 1st time, I can actually read the clock across the room when I wake up and I am grateful every day for that. The reading glasses are just cheap readers that are sold everywhere. Maybe the rest of the fund could be some sort of 2nd honeymoon , just my opinion, just Be Happy !!!!

I've never played live poker, but I believe it must be very tiring to sit for hours, and there are tournaments that last several days. It definitely wouldn't be for me.

@Debi, don't feel defeated. You knew when it was time to stop. Maybe your body was already giving you signs. You were a warrior and decided what was right to do. Now, take advantage of this time to have fun.

Regarding your comment about the funds that were left over, I would choose option 4. Health always comes first.

Be happy and enjoy this time with your family. All the best to you and a big hug.🙂

This is very insightful and helpful! I will not get the discussion with my surgeon until early January but this is all good to know - thank you!

I have other issues with eyes as well but I don't think that will have any impact on which cataract choice I make.

I've always enjoyed following your stories while at Live poker events... especially the WSOP. Loads of fun cheering you on!
That's why I added a sad face, I actually missed not railing debz, I blame life getting in the way. I'll have to revisit the past rails that I have missed.

I do understand with the not having fun anymore, there have been times where I have felt that with playing online. When I first started playing I always had the fun factor, and I'm now starting to get it back.
