I just made my annual fall trip to Vegas - it was a short one this time - only 6 days. I had family arriving, so I was only going to play 3 days of poker. I decided to play in the $200 dailies at the Wynn.

My first tournament was last Sunday at noon. I was excited to be playing since I got sick during my summer wsop trip. Starting stacks were 25k - I love deep stacks. Then they announced you could pay $100 for a one-time add-on of 25k chips as long as you still have chips. (So you can't bust and then get your add-on). Surprisingly only half the table took advantage of this. I don't understand their logic if they even had any. Even the guy to my left who had won the tournament on Sat waited a while. '

So there I sat with 50k chips - a dream come true tournament for me!

After the first break it didn't take long before I was watching the clock for the next break- they were every 2 hours which is way too long for women - but women don't get to decide these things.

When there was still 25 minutes left I realized how many times they kept having to tell me the action is on me. I did not have my phone or ipad out as usual - I was just more interested in seeing how the people who walked by were dressed, looking at their shoes, etc. I knew nothing about the some of the players on my table and how they had been playing - I didn't care. The idea of playing that tournament until midnight or later was incredibly overwhelming. I didn't know how to get through the next 25 minutes.

And it hit me - I was almost anxious to be out of the tournament so I could go do something more fun. Then I asked myself why was I even playing? Out of habit was the answer. So I went all in, busted and enjoyed the rest of my time not playing poker. I see no reason to ever play again.

Live poker tournaments require an incredible amount of stamina and mental focus. I don't want to dedicate all of that to poker anymore.

It has been an incredible 20+years - so many great memories. But it is just not for me anymore. It costs me $300 to find out but now I know. :)

The lights rise very slowly in Live Poker Tournaments and I suppose it becomes eternal if you are not trained in patience and mind control to spend concentrated hours.
Maybe you could try with turbo or fast tournaments, so it makes you less tired and more enjoyable. 👍
Anyway it is a very personal and acceptable decision, but we will surely miss the rail of your participation in the WSOP.
I hope to see you more often at the online tables of the CC games now! 🙂
Congratulations on all your previous achievements Debi!👏👏👏 You have to look forward, the future is positive! 🙂👍 Hug ♥️

It's not for anyone - glad I had fun, bit when you're not enjoying it anymore or find more joy elsewhere - you're right to and pursue. All the best!

Everyone should learn from this and listen to their body/feelings. 👍🏻

I'm sure you had wonderful years with live poker and now you have much more ahead doing other things. ☺️

You sat with 50k chips? Did you add on or double up? Since you did not understand the logic of those who have add on their stack.

I have never played live poker, but 25 mins is too much for me, i think the tournaments may last around 10 hours which is too much. I would rather play 10 mins live or 7 mins online.

Hope you had a good experience as a retired live poker player, now you will meet the likes of maronza at the tables in replay, and we'll share a lot of experience together

Maybe the issue is with finding a structure that is enjoyable in live poker? The WSOP in Vegas is just one live venue of many. That having been said, if you know you're done, there's a lot more to enjoy in life!

She did add up. Hence the $300 spent. I think she meant she didn't understand those who didn't add up.

Life has its phases. We never know for sure when one starts or when one ends... There's no way to know for sure. Sometimes they start (and/or end) like this: "Today I am not playing poker because I need to do this other thing", "I need to visit my parents", or hang out with friends, or take care of my newborn baby, or focus on studying for my job and maybe get a promotion, whatever. Sometimes they end (or start?) like this: "I am too tired", and that's ok.

I've started a new phase in the last months after marriage. Suddenly changes in routine, going to a new house (and new neighborhood), having bigger responsibilities, and so on. Suddenly I don't have too much time to play (or study) poker. Suddenly I can't focus for long hours anymore. Suddenly I need to get better at my job, because I really like it and don't want to be a pro poker player.

Suddenly I realize that, if I want to keep enjoying poker, I need to do it another way. Maybe playing cash games. Maybe playing home games with friends. Maybe playing Cardschat freerolls here and there. But life is never the same, it changes little by little. We are never the same.

When I've read the book The Godfather of Poker, Doyle Brunson's autobiography, this is the one thing I never forget: he describes how his life had its seasons, and in some of them, he barely played poker, like he never was a professional poker player. Today I see Phil Ivey doing the same, off the tables for some years, and now coming back and enjoying poker in his pace.

I hope you keep enjoying poker in other ways, Debi! :)

Debi I understand being stuck at a table especially given the tense vibes the table can give sometimes but rightfully so it is a competition. There is no reason to feel shame (not saying you do) but hey simply it’s not for you than it’s not for you. There are finer things in life like giving us great action and commentary on this thread ! All the best

That's right, I know that feeling. Live poker requires more mental and physical strength than online poker. I think it requires twice the patience, focus, and effort compared to online poker.
In the past, I also liked live more, but I found myself more comfortable playing poker online.
Good luck to you Debi:)

Debi, even among professional players, Poker should first and foremost be fun. If you don't feel good about being there, the best option is not to be there. I admire your history in Poker and your effort and commitment here in the community. Maybe one day you'll play live again, but because you wanted to and not out of habit. In the same way that you stopped forcing yourself to play out of habit, don't make not playing a habit either. The best of all is being able to be free to choose what to do with your time.
I wish you success in everything you do and as you said you will stop playing live, I hope to meet you online from time to time. See you later!
