Mental. Everytime i screw up its because i want to bust someone i don't like, zoned out not paying attention, make a decision to fast without calculating the whole situation, or talk myself into the opponent having nothing in there hand. very mental game

So dead on. Well said. I agree and do the same. Its like i know but I have a distraction or angry and funny like you said dont like the person and want to knock them out. So mental.. Great game..:joyman:

It is mental, but maybe not sport but some other word that can describe such "poker feelings" as win-loose, gladness, tilt, and many other feelings from playing poker

Poker is gambling, but starting from NL400 and higher stakes already can be considered as mental game... Because micro and low limits this is clearly not a sport, a game of chance just for fun.
Agreed bluffs with fail miserably in all lower limits maybe from nl100 i would say though it becomes atleast somewhat mental

I think poker is mental because of having to really clear your mind to play in the tournament. I have noticed that if I have alot on my mind I tend to play bad. But if your in the right mind set to play a long MTT then you will have a better run in the tournament. With alot on your mind during the tournament you tend to play hands you shouldnt. You should only play big MTT's will nothing on your plate for a duration of the tournament.

Success in gambling can be achieved in two ways.

1) Give yourself a finite window of being a gambler, be it 1 bet, 1 day, 1 week or whatever. Gamble on anything you like in the window but once the window closes you must never gamble again..ever. If you made a profit in this time then you can forever brag about being a successful gambler (If you made a lose, and hopefully it wasn't much, and you can confidently tell people that gambing is a mugs game)

2) Never make a bet unless you have calculated that it will yield a profit if you make it many times. This is the +EV (positive expected value) that you will see around here very often. To do this you need an "edge", an advantage that other people don't have.

-If it's sports you bet on then your edge might be an analytical interest in the player\teams involded or perhaps an advanced understanding of maths\statistics that allow you to spot +EV odds.

-If it's Casino table games you bet on then you're only chance to be successful is if you apply option1 above (OK, perhaps card counting and edge sorting could move some games into +EV but I woudn't advise it)

- If it's poker you want to be successful at then knowledge is the edge. Experience & study will equip you with the knowledge to know what games, what stakes and what tables you should play at to be a winning player. (The Strategy section on cardschat is a great help)

I guess put yourself in situations where you are the favorite. Always use math as a guide.

Just realized that luck plays a very important role. I played micromillions and got a 2 queens on hand. Then I went to all in.Almost all folded but one fish called with hand of A3 unsuited. The river was an ace. I was eliminated shortly before the bubble

Poker is a game of skill....Online and live poker do, however, have their different skill sets. online poker skills include computer knowledge as well as the math skills required in live play. Skill without a doubt!

Ofcouse poker is a game of skill and tactics. like bankroll management and knowing your odds ect.... There is always going to be an element of luck in any skill game you play including sports.

like a few others already said, in the long run its skill but if you play the moment there is a certain factor of luck (Phil ivey can loose vs. my grandmother who never played a hand in her life) what i want to say poker is skill game with unknown information. see professional poker players, they are the best example that poker is a skill game

Is not dying while taking a bath skill or luck? There is the chance of slipping on a bar of soap! Just because there's some varience involved in poker that doesn't make it a game of chance....taking a bath isn't a game of chance.

Well, if you bear in mind onlain poker , the ratio of luck and skill will depend on the limit. Ie The higher the limit , the more skill increases % !!!

If you're looking for a percentage, I would say that, in the long run, if you're what one would consider lucky, then your luck will even you out to zero if you have no skill. (Hence why some lunatics continually play ridiculously at all stakes.) However, if someone, in the long run has what one would consider skill, and they're lucky, all of their winnings would be attributed to skill, and all of their losses attributed to luck. If someone has skill in the long run, but no luck, they're going to break even as, mostly a contributor. So, in conclusion, if you're lucky and skilled, you're in the money, if you're unlucky and skilled, you're breaking even, if you're lucky and unskilled, you may do better than the skilled guy, but only if he's unluckier than you. I'm no expert. I have been hitting the roulette tables lately.
