Definitely leaning towards more a game of skill. If this was untrue then the same people wouldn't be making money. Luck is definitely a factor, but not the determining factor in poker. The more skill you have the better chance you have instead of relying on just luck.

if you are truly a knowledgeable and disciplined poker player, you will have to be unlucky to lose while a player of games of pure chance needs to be lucky to win.

Poker is just like fishing - those who don´t do it think it´s just luck. But when you are involved you realise there´s skill...and the deeper you get you realise the more skill there is.And some skill comes from taking advantage of your luck.

Anyone who does both will know what I mean.

Of course that poker is specially a game for skills. But I guess if you don't have a litlle bit of luck you don't win a tourmament, wathever he is whatever you are.

Of course it is a matter of skill. Luck is only important at the lower levels.
Professional players rely on luck, they manage

Luck - short term.
Skill - long term.

'Nuff said.

I used to be of the opinion that there is both skill and luck in poker.

Now I only think in terms of probabilities and my ability to make the most of those probabilities over time. That's the only difference between winning and losing.

Poker Game of Skill?

poker game of Skill?
My thoughts. Poker is a game of skill. Why? I will tell you:
1. There are “good” poker players that can beat weaker ones (almost every time).
2. Luck can win in the short run, but not consistently. Some people win consistently
3. People play poker at different levels of skill. When playing against someone of equal skill, luck factors in at a higher rate, but does not negate the skill of the players
4. Three people with great skill in a game of 10 (with 7 poor players) that play many games will see top 3 in a much higher statistical percentage than the 7 poor players.

Didn't you hear Mike McDermott explaining this to his girlfriend?
"I mean why do you think the same five guys make it to the final table of the world series of poker every single year?" "What are they, the luckiest guys in Las Vegas?"

It is pretty simple , poker is a game of skill over the long run . Anybody could experience wild variances both positive and negative , in the short run . But over time the money gradually moves from losing / breakeven players to winning ones . If you make the best decisions over and over you will in the end be a winning player .

I also believe volume and adequate sample size had something to do and related when determining the the skill vs luck definition, especially in the long run.

Ask Mark Newhouse. I still cringe when he shoved those pocket 10s on the river at the final table, but he's still my boy. :D

EV+ > EV- lucky results in the long term.

Luck can only take you so far before you get burnt.

Yeah, exactly, I agree with you. Poker is a game of skill. I also think that luck also matters, but skill is the most important thing.

55% skill and 45% luck, I think.Skill is higher than luck because a good board still need to properly dispose of.Sometimes you need to make a good pass although at this point it seems that your board.

dont agree 50/50 I believe in timely luck and long run skill

skill will take you further last forever luck is timely either have it for short bursts or dont but over all to me skill puts me to position to have timely luck and do very well in poker:)

poker is skill bassed. you put yourself in a position to win enough times and you will win over all. everyone has been one outed and one outed someone. but if you put yourself in a position with the other guy having only one out you will be the winner 97 percent of the time that isn't luck

I still believe, POKER is skill=+-60% and luck=+-40%. You can experience this in your live local cardroom. In the long run, the most skilled wins.

If you visualize Poker is 50/50, then its a gambling thing.

poker is a game of both, luck can extremly affect your short term results... but over thousand and millions of hand everyones "luck" equals out, so it is the skilled players who normaly make money. A good way to think about it is like a casino running a roullete game, the casino is gambeling agenst you too, but since the game has a positive expectation for them after many games they are sure to be the long term winner.

Yes, I too think that poker is a skill based game. Luck also matter sometime, but skill is more important.
