Dusty I just want you to know that I think your book is a labor of love. I am new to poker and your book is my first poker book(I wrote the same thing on your facebook recently). Your positive energy is very influential and I am grateful to have caught some of it through your book and I feel it is the foundation of my poker aspirations. I hope to sign up at Drag the Bar soon and see you there. I do just have one question though. Did something go wrong for you over at 2+2? I noticed your "account banned by request". It seemed in a closing post in one of the threads that admin was dropping the hammer because they have books they are trying to sell and you were a threat. If this was already covered here at CC I apologize.

Aw gee, if I'd waited to receive the book I would have known you already answered my ??? (post #94) :p.

Anyway, I rec'd the book today & really love it!! I've already read it cover to cover (I'm a fast reader). I like how it's straightforward & I esp like the analogies.

You've given me many, many things to consider. I believe this just may be the resource that helps me transition my thinking from ‘poker is for entertainment’ to ‘poker is a viable income opportunity’ (a major paradigm shift for me). I was raised in an environment that emphasized success = ‘pursue college education, get a job with a major company, & make a 6-figure income’…been there, done that….& yet I don’t feel satisfied that I’ve accomplished much of anything; I’ve become so disillusioned with corporate America within the past few years (ie: Enron, Tyco, Madoff, Wall Street, etc…) & have been trying to figure out what I really want to do when I grow up .

I greatly admire how socially conscientious you are. I think that you (& Chip Reese) are/were on the right track, poker can = freedom…to do the things one wants and/or finds important. The opportunity cost, for me, was not having quality time for my family while instead spending that time analyzing & implementing process improvements for an employer who expected me to perform @ the level of 2.8 FTE peeps; I ended up too tired & too stressed to enjoy the limited family time I did have.

Thank you for taking the time to be in the CC forum & making your insight so freely available. I have been enjoying the other members’ ???s & your thoughtful responses. I'm looking forward to Vol II & your memoir Raise...Best Wishes & continued success to you, your wife, & daughter!

Over/Under on the number of post you'll end up with in this thread?

Speaking of over/unders, do you have any bad sports betting habits / degen gambling stories?

#149

I once bet $40,000 on a football game. The 2nd largest bet I have ever made is $100. I was at Vegas at the time and heard from a friend who plays for a major sports team who texted me that the QB went down in a closed practice and the back up was hurt as well. So I bet $40,000 on the game and won the bet later that week.

Thanks for joining cardschat and contributing in this thread:cool: I got the latest issue of CardPlayer magazine with Isildur and Team Fulltilt on the cover and featured in the hand 4 hand combat article is Dusty Leatherass Schmidt. It's about a 10/20 nl 6max table where you donkbet the minimum bet on the river and entice your opponent to bluffraise you potsize to 1k with a busted openender straight draw - brilliant:cool: How did the article come about? Did they contact you and ask to talk about an interesting hand? Is it coincidental you're in CardPlayer at the time of the release of your book?

#150

They contacted me about doing a feature. It has actually lead to a job writing blogs for Cardplayer.com and bi weekly columns. Keep your eyes peeled for the next issue where my column will debut and if you want to follow my blog, go to the blogs section at cardplayer.com.

Consider Joe's questions to be asked twice.:) I saw that article too and exclaimed, "Wow--I know that guy!". Then of course I remembered I don't really know you, but it sure feels that way Dusty because you have been so open and authentic in answering all of our questions.

In addition to Joe's questions about the article, I was wondering if the picture of the guy striking a martial arts pose is also you. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised.:D

#151

Yes the ninja guy is me of course. You don't want to mess with me :p

Have you ever Googled yourself?

How do you decide when to withdraw some of your poker winnings? Do you tell yourself, "Anything I've made over x amount of dollars this month goes into the bank?" (If you care to discuss that, it might be a bit too personal.)

#152

Yes I have googled myself before. I hope that doesn't make me sound like a joker, but I suspect if everyone is being honest here, everyone has googled themselves at some point. I bet the President has even done it.

As far as withdrawing goes, I just withdraw when I have like 2x the roll I need in my account. I then withdraw the money I don't need to still be properly rolled at the games.

Okay, thought of a ???. Treat Your Poker Like a Business is primarily from an online perspective. When, & if, you play in live games...do you also apply the business principles or is it more of a recreational activity for you. I know for me, I like the social aspect of live vs online...so I'm not really sure I want to evolve my live play into a business model (yet).

#158

Not only will it help a live players poker game, but it can help someone who doesn't even play poker!! I recently had a CEO of a mid size company buy 10 copies the other day. We emailed him to ask him if he'd ordered so many copies by mistake. He said he hadn't and went on to say that he stayed up all night reading the book and loved it so much he bought 10 more. The reason he said he bought 10 more was because he was going to make it mandatory reading for all his executive board members because he said if they all applied the business concepts from my book to their jobs each day, the company would do much, much better in his opinon.

That was easily the most flattering thing I have heard about my book. If anyone wants to check my book out it can be had at http://www.dustyschmidt.net

why do you think you are different then the wealthy people around you?
because you say you'll give back 990 million of the 1 billion you want to make?

they are doing exactly what you are ....accumulating money so they can be the big shot and support their circle of friends and family.

your robin hood act is lame...you are them

#161

I want to make it clear that I do not want to open further discussion about this.

With that being said, I don't think there is anything wrong with trying to accumulate wealth. Many, many people are talented in business or in a big time money making endeavor. And I think that those people have every right to want to pursue making a bunch of money using their talents.

From there I think it is what you do with the money. Some I have noticed want to hold onto it at all costs and they really aren't doing themselves or society in general any favors when they do that. I am a believer in trying to help out as many people as you reasonably can with the money you don't need (need being defined as money you almost certainly will never spend supporting your lifestyle).

I am not going to lay any claims that I am better or worse than anyone else that has lots of money. Nor am I even saying that I have a "Robin Hood" mentality. I just know intuitively that it feels weird to have a lot of money and to see so many people whose lives could change on what seems to me like a small amount of money. I have a hard time not helping people in those spots. I have noticed many of my financial peers take a lot of joy in those situations because it makes them feel better to know that they are doing significantly better than someone else. That is the part where I want to not be around those types of people.

when you first started what techniques did you find the most usefull in helping improve your game? ie videos/HH posting etc.

#170

Videos and books without a doubt. I watched as many videos as I can and am typing this answer out with a huge stack of poker books sitting right next to me. Everything else can help out as well and I think it is definitely individualistic, but for me it was definitely videos and books.

And yet another ???. What are your thoughts on a poker player forming an LLC once he/she has transitioned to pro status? I'm thinking it would be favorable from a personal liabilities perspective, in addition to the pass-through tax advantages? Of course, this is after checking with their tax professional or atty regarding the best election treatment option.

#177

I think this is probably a pretty good option, but it is of course best to consult an accountant.

The CEO (post #260) of the mid-sized company wouldn't have been Jack Stack from Springfield Remanufacturing Company would it?

I used to work for that company and have personally met and fished with Mr. Stack. He also wrote a book called "The Great Game of Business". He is also just an all-around great guy who made something out of nothing. He was the Janitor in the company when it was going out of business. He bought the company with some friends and the rest is history. If you haven't checked that book out, you might want to. It's a great read on several aspects.

Hello Dusty, Glad you joined CC. My question is, how did you weed through the players to the higher stakes table? Did you use proper BRM? X

Hi Leatherass,

Really wish I saw this post before. The earliest I can read this post is on the weekend. But I will read it all because I don't want to ask the same question that someone else asks.

I will also try to review your podcast interview with Bart to see if there was anything else I wanted to ask. Hopefully you will still be posting on Monday. I appreciate the short-stack style, but have much to learn about it.

Take care.

Is this because you decided to self publish your book instead of going through 2+2 like Ed Miller does?

Looking forward to knowing which training site you decide to join (create?) as I really enjoy your videos.

I'm over at http://www.dragthebar.com now. My issues with Stox had nothing to do with my book.

I will admit I never really thought this day would come, but due to irreconcilable differences with Stoxpoker/Cardrunners, I am resigning as a lead coach.

Does this have anything to do with Brian Townsend and the Isildur situation?

Either way, what do you think of them sharing hand history files and basically ganging up on Isildur? What do you think of fulltilt suspending his red pro status for 1 month?

#189

It didn't have much to do with the Townsend Isildur situation.

I believe that Isildur should have his money returned. What the 3 folks at Cardrunners did was very obviously unethical and against the playing condition rules at Full Tilt Poker. When you violate some random T&C at FTP that is one thing, but to violate a rule of the actual playing of the game in a major way and for life changing stakes, that is pretty pathetic if you ask me.

How do you respond/ defend your actions when people say what you do is bad for the game (IE, bumhunting)?

I game select within the rules of poker. I of course look for weaker opponents, but overall the games I play are much more difficult on average than what everyone else plays. Since I play 16 tables at a time, most of the games I sit in aren't very good at all and to play over 16 tables makes it tough for me to make as many great reads. I believe overall while I keep my eyes peeled for weaker players, I don't think what I do is bad for the game at all.

Leatherass, thanks for the intro to this site, as i just found & joined through your blog.

1) I would like to hear your thoughts on the difference between "bum hunting" and "game selection." It drives me crazy... the reason we play is to make money, and every book/strategy forum that is out there preaches the importance of game selection. Yet, when you do it, it is bum hunting... why? (lol... obviously you don't need to defend yourself from the (jealous) haters, but I'd like to hear you anyway).

2) i have limited time, as i have a daughter and work full time. How would you suggest balancing the desire to improve w/ the desire to make a part-time income from this game? (playing a couple tables to improve vs. multi-tabling to make $)

3) Tips on session review? Basically a "how to?" what are we looking for/what are we asking ourselves?

(*shameless "try to look cool" and get my Q answered ... I used to play hoop w/ the new head FB coach of your Ducks).

1. There is no such difference imo.

2. You just have to be patient. Work on doing whatever it takes to improve and take your time with adding tables.

3. Address all of the spots that gave you trouble in your session and then leave the room and don't think about it until the next time you play, if you can.

Nice! I bet you could jump right over Chip :D

What made you chose that site?

Considering I get free stox and CR memberships through the deal they have with FTP, what would be the argument to pay for membership there on top of those other two?

#196

My attorney has advised me not to comment on these types of questions at this time.
