If my opponent doesn’t mind, I would definitely glance at his cards whenever possible. I don’t consider it cheating—cheating would be physically altering the game, like turning his cards over to see them. But if he’s holding them at an angle where I can clearly see, I won’t hesitate to take advantage of that. In poker, players are responsible for protecting their own cards, often by covering them with their hands. If he fails to do so, that’s his mistake, not mine. For that reason, I would use the information to my advantage while playing.

I would never intentionally look at an opponent’s cards. I would inform the dealer if this situation occurs.
I personally make sure that my hand is protected (to prevent the hand being drawn into the muck or looked at).
Being a retired dealer at one of my local casinos, I have seen odd things happen which can cause problems between players (and also dealers, me included).
Keep the game a gentleman’s game.
