Hand review

Hey Nathan was just hoping you could possibly give me some advice on a hand i played in live cash $1/$3 no limit. We are playing roughly $900 effective. I have $900 behind, Button has about $800 behind, and Straddler has about $300 behind. The Straddler is a a face up player. The Button is a solid player given the stakes. In the hand the button ended up limping which was a surprise to me because he has not done so before and he’s a solid player so the thought of him trying to play AA in a tricky way did cross my mind, just to provide some back story to the hand.

Button: Limps
BB (Me): raise to 25$ with JTo
6$ Straddler: Calls

Flop: JT2 rainbow
Me: check (my thinking behind this was that I pretty much have the board covered and was hoping Straddler or Button would take a stab at the pot)
Straddler: bets $60
Button: raise to $150
Me: raise to $500 (this is the part I struggle with and am not sure if I made the right decision. The only legitimate hand I can really put the limper on is 22 after I’ve thought about it after the fact,)
Straddler: folds
Button: thinks for a while and shoves all in (here is where I realized I’m screwed, but I made the call anyway given the fact I basically committed myself to the pot). Button does end up having 22 and I lose a huge pot.

I was hoping you could just provide some type of advice on what I should of done differently.

hey nathan

i've read 2 of your books and watch your videos. i can honestly say that you helped me become a winning player. (i study a lot, but yours was the first book that was written for a player like me. since then i've read lots of other great books. thannks!)

i was wondering what your opinion is on playing 6max vs 9max cash. i've been playing 9max exclusively, but recently read a comment that playing 6 max is better when there is a fish because you don't have to share them with as many players as on a 9max table.... thoughts?

my ranges are all built around 9max, so switching would take some adjustment. what are your thoughts on this?

thanks nate for all you do for the poker community!!
i havent been on CC forever and finding this opportunity to ask you a question is awesome!!

Hey Timk21,

Wow crazy hand. First thing to note is that this hand is extremely deep. If my math is correct, the button has 266 big blinds and you cover.

This changes the strategy a lot. It means you need a much stronger hand to stack off with.

So, for this reason (while I like your play preflop), I do not like your play on the flop.

I think by taking this re-raise line, you only get action from one of the 3 hands that currently beats you, which is exactly what happened.

I would prefer to either bet out here on this flop (standard play).

Or if you decide to check, then I think you need to just call the button's re-raise, because when you bump it up again, you essentially fold out everything except 22, TT and JJ.

Whereas if you just call, you keep all his bluffs and worse hands like KJ involved. And you also aren't forced to stack off, ultra deep stacked, with a hand that often isn't good enough to play for all the chips.

Hope this helps.

Hey Jimbo,

Thanks for the kind words! I am glad my books and videos have helped you.

I actually made a video earlier this year discussing if you should play 6max or full ring:

Hey Nathan

thanks for the answer!
i just re-read CTM over 2 days (on the 31st and 1st) just to start the year with my brain in the right place. going to purchase TMP next week.

i had one more question, if you don't mind: what is your opinion of the Cash-out option?

i get the impression that good players don't use it.
but, i'm wondering if maybe it's useful when you are deep at maybe 200bb+ and have 80+% equity in an all in pot....?

there's lots of threads about the cash-out, but i'd rather get an opinion from someone i trust

thanks again bud

go Jets go

Hi Nathan,

Thank you as ever for your time and expertise with answering CC members questions.

My question is this - i play mainly live but have also been playing online poker now for over 25 years and one of the most frustrating things i come across with cash games are the players who play any piece of the pot to the river.

What advice can you give to players when facing this type of LAG player as often this can be a villain who has a large bankroll so they are prepared to push this - is this therefore a cash of just finding the right type of table and adjusting your limits?

Thanks again.

Glenn

Hello! That's awesome, I'm new here, and I've been watching some of your videos, not knowing exactly how you got to the pro level. I would say I'm an admirer after reading your story. Your HUD video was the first one I watched, and sometimes I'm lost in the informtion, there is just so much. Is it ok to go for just 2 line on the HUD? like the main preflop info, and the CB F - T with the WcP (if I'm not wrong with the spelling). I've started playing tournament, just because I enjoy it, but I haven't played enough to be able to say if I'm doing good or not, I'm on the losing side, but with only no more than 15 tournaments played.
The cash game is way more stable and direct, but players are better and less wild, so I wanted to know if it's a good idea to train on cash games, and if it's ok to multi table tournaments and cash games? (I want to start with just 2 tables, so 1 cash and 1 tournament, I'm not thinking quick enough to be able to play more efficiently, and want to train to multi table at the same time).

Do you ever feel pity with a player who ran hot and is losing big money? Did you ever not pursue a pot because of that?

Unfortunately poker is a game where you shouldn't really show pity in my opinion. If your goal is to maximize your profits, then you need to maximize your earnings when others are running bad.

I know that nobody has ever taken it easy on me when I am running terrible! haha :D

Hey Nathan!

I'm really impressed with your stuff, the youtube channel is looking super fly!

What would be the best way to connect? DMs? DMs on some Socials?

I would really love to pick your brain for a bit if you have time. Now that I got my book finished, I'd love to talk to someone who's done that before and done great things since :)

Major props to you my man!

I want to begin using multi-tabling software and have considered both Tile&Stack and Jurogin. T&S requires a yearly subscription fee but the latter is free. What is your take on either or do you have a favorite software in mind? Thank you and I'm a subscriber to your youtube channel.

Hello Nathan
Let's say you are playing a live $1-$2 cash game with 100 BBs to start, how many BBs should you win before you start considering that it's time to cash out?

just wanna thank you for the informative chatting.

Did you have a especial aproche to play the "flash" "rush and cash" cash games, those games where when you fold you are send to other table. In sites like gg poker you have some basics information from each player, how is this information important in this kind of cash game.

Hello people. How to play AA pair pre flop, without being too passive, but also without scaring the other players out of the hand?
