I prefer freezeout tournaments instead of rebuy but rebuys are more beneficial for the operators as they get more rake from the same number of players. Good balance are the reentry tournaments limited to one or two reentries plus addon.

don't like rebuy and add-on tournaments, to many all-ins early on, but will use add-on if in cashing position.

I used to hate re-buys and add-on's but recently I have played some of the pokerstars school tourney's that will let you re-buy for 1 cent and add-on 5K in chips for 1 cent.
Depending on how deep you are in the tourney, a add-on can mean the difference between busting out before the bubble or making the money.
So for 1 cent it makes sense to add on to make the payout's. even if the first payout is only 10 cents and once the bubble burst's you only need a couple of good hands to double up and make higher pay jumps.
I have even made the final table a couple of times.

I like the type of tournaments like this, but when I play in them I don't rebuy and even less add-on.If I manage to raise the stack, I play further, if not, then I just quit.

I am not against such tournaments The main thing is that it should not be a Turbo or hyper-turbo tournament !!!

I personally dont like re-buys and add on. They have there place but some of them have gotten so crazy I stay away from them. While it is nice to have a chance to re enter the tournament when your out some of them I have seen people enter in and just go all in and re-buy until they have a big stack. 4 and 5 times in the same tournament doing this. Its not a winning way but it does ruin the game in my opinion.

Hello all!

What do you think about rebuys and add ons?
I personally don't like rebuys and addons. I don't like to find myself thinking "but I can rebuy!" and calling when I should not. Of course it is a way for poker sites to make more money but I think it is not good for the game. In my opinion, after buyin everyone should be in the same situation without giving an edge to those to who just go all in all the time and rebuy.
I don't like add-ons, but I"m okay with a reasonable number of rebuys AND a reasonable late registration time-period. It gets very annoying when a late registration period is REALLY long and just before it is over a player comes in that is going all-in with <10bb starting stack just to rebuy as many times as possible, hit the double up. That's poker though...

To me it is not the rebuy and add ons its the late reg. some go on for hours.
100% agree with you - the real issue is the late registration that goes on for hours and hours.

Hi.
Sometimes I play in such tournaments, but personally I very rarely do rebay or addon. Although I like such tournaments because they have a lot more prizes in their structure than in regular tournaments.
Good luck.

Rebuys are generally -EV, unless you are very short stacked then it's like a reentry. For example suppose you pay $10 and a $1 fee and get 2000 starting chips. Your starting EV is $10. If you pay $10 more for 2000 more chips, per ICM having double the chips isn't double the EV, so your new EV will be less than $20. The $10 rebuy doesn't increase your EV by $10.

OTOH add ons are usually worth it, because they're usually giving you double the chips for your money. But even in this circumstance, if you're in first place with large lead even double the chips for your money might not increase your EV enough for the price. An ICM calculator would be able to answer more precisely.

When playing in one of these I always figure I'm going to buy the add on. But I don't do rebuys. I might do a reentry if its early enough in the tourney.

Good afternoon!
Totally agree with you!
Rebuys and add-ons are harmful to the "MTT ecology".
I practically don't play such tournaments myself, but if I play, then I do rebuy only in tournaments with a smooth structure.

I am not a fan of those. I would have liked more freezouts available. I just feel rebuys take a bit away of the skill factor and rather promote the gamble aspect of poker.

When playing tournaments companions do the rebuy and addon very useful. If you are playing a tournament where you are unlucky it is always nice not to finish it and do a rebuy. These features are useful for players.

I've never liked rebuy/addons or reentry tournaments. To me they give what I consider to be bad players the opportunity to buy their way out of their bad play. They constantly ship their stacks in pre-flop, shove, and even worse, call off on draws. They play low percentage, high variance poker. And when they lose, they simply buy another chance to give their high variance strategy another shot.

The worst part about it is not having a choice. These days the majority of tournaments are either rebuy/addon or unlimited reentry with 3 hours or more of late registration, and freezeouts are very few and very far between. So it's not like you can even choose to not to play reentry tournaments if you're not a fan of them. It's either play them, or don't play online poker at all.

1 ribeye and 1 addon is a fairer solution.

A rebuy has its place. An add-on is a "protection racket"...(ie it's dodgy as ****).

Let's start with Rebuy. I don't mind letting people blow themselves out, restock and blow up again. To me, that puts money in the pot. Great for me. For the re-buyer, it gives them a second chance. So its win-win and increases the total number of paid positions (or higher paid positions)..

Add-on's though are a con that we should all be pushing back against. The big problem here is that it devalues the position of the tourney's winners so far. There is often a large change in the purchase value also, with the add-on being cheaper than the original buy-in. All of a sudden, those with a solid strategy find themselves having to pay again just to stand still. That is unjust.

poker sites should not be constantly looking for more ways to make a higher percentage from each game. (I think they are charging too much as it is). Antes and rakes are too high too. (Go on, change my mind!)

It is interesting to me that, when I was a bigger noob than I am now, I loved add-on's. The reason is that in one fell swoop , I was back in the game, with a middling stack without having earned it. Now that I play much more and generally am faring better around the add-on period, it is more of a hindrance to my success than a benefit. Essentially, whatever edge I had is erased. If I choose NOT to buy the add-on, then I am moving backwards. So that means I am FORCED to use the add-on facility, or accept the handicap.
So no. Don't like the options that are solely there to increase table revenues without adding to the game.

Rebuys and adonnas put in unequal conditions the participants of a particular tournament. A person who has made a large deposit or has a powerful bankroll can afford several additional entries or out of the blue, significantly increase his stack. In addition, such tournaments prevent players from being disciplined. It is very difficult to restrain yourself when at the very beginning of the tournament there is an all-in in almost every hand. In general, I don’t like these tournaments, so I don’t play in them.

To me they are 2 different things :) It's funny, but I don't mind rebuys, although I do hate add ons. I often late reg the rebuys knowing I need a double up or 2 to get myself in the game. I do this because I hate sitting there for hours building a stack only to lose with the better hand when a bunch of shovers come in with a few mins of late reg to go. If you can't beat em join em. It doesn't mean I'm shoving anything though, I'm selective. I know I have to get lucky but if I'm out I'll just rebuy and try again, so I may do 2 or 3 bullets. I hate addons more, cause you do work, pull ahead, then everyone adds on and it evens out the field again and takes way longer for people to bust and get ITM. I think add on tourneys are a drag.
