Help Maintaining Discipline With Chip Lead

Hi Ryan, I'm relatively new to MTTs and been better overall at winning hands. I often build a chip stack early on the in the tournament then I last a couple more hours and gradually accumulate chips and then I make one bad call and then lose the majority of my chip stack. That tilts me and then I get knocked out of the tournament not even close to the bubble. It's been frustrating because you can go from the top 10% of the field in a 1,500+ field to out of the tournament with a couple bad plays.

I have a really bad habit of chasing draws because I rationalize it by saying I have the chip lead and can afford it. My question for you is how do I maintain discipline after I gain a lead early on and make it through to the final table?

Rebuys/Add-ons/Late Registration

I have been looking for information about considerations for re-buys, add-ons, late registration. Almost all comments in forums seem to be in favor of add-ons, with logic like "Why would you give your opponents an advantage over you?"

I will preface this with my bias. I don't like the idea of any of them and would prefer if none of them existed. If I had my way every tournament would be a freeze-out, but that based on a style preference. I feel that you can apply a little more pressure if the villain can't re-buy ad nauseum.

I understand that re-buys and add-ons help the casino meet guarantees. (It is frustrating when you think you have found a bargain tournament, and re-buys are filling out that guarantee without increasing the prize pool.)

I understand that in live tournaments re-buys, and add-ons make sense because you have to travel to the casino and getting knocked out and going home empty handed sucks.

I play exclusively online. There is always another tournament.

Re-buys only make sense to me if you are knocked out in the very early rounds. Any later than that and you are just buying into another tournament at a significant disadvantage. This amounts to late registration, which only makes sense to me if you think you have a monstrous edge, and it is worth your while to save a little time by not playing the early rounds.

Add-ons are a weird concept to me. You are effectively chopping your return on investment in half. If the add-on, significantly improves your odds of winning, I can see where it might make sense, however, the ones I have played don't usually have a huge amount of chips; usually x1-x2 the chips of the initial buy-in. A couple levels and it will be insignificant. For it to be useful you have increase it exponentially, if you are willing to play that way, it may be more useful to attack peoples' add-on with your short stack.

This got a little verbose. It seems that re-buys, add-ons, and late registration are -EV options, because they diminish your ROI. They are only useful with regard to time considerations, or if the tournament has some value to you other than pure monetary reward.

Am I being naive here? Is there a magic formula for determining when to get an add-on?Or should I just keep going for extreme long shots by refusing re-buys and add-ons?

Thanks!

I should mention that I decided to repost my question regarding re-buys and add-ons, on all the pro AMA tournament threads, to see if there was consensus or difference of opinion.

So I find that I get worn down after 2.5 hours of play
I do very well at first. But seems I loose something
I start doubting myself my hands
Seems donkey hands I told usually hit more than having high cards
Should I keep folding hands and waiting for pairs
I also chase my hands alot thinking I'll hit on the river lol
Thanks

Online tournaments

Hello!
So I have been playing online poker for years (unfortunately I went on a hiatus when pokerstars & Fulltilt became unavailable in the US)
I seem to notice a pattern towards the end of the tournament. If you have a smaller chip stack (10xBB or smaller) and you are waiting for your all in hand. It doesn't seem to matter what your hand in-if a big stack calls you, they always win (and vice versa if you have a big stack, it seems that you can call with anything, against a small stack and win) I would say about 85% of the time. What is your opinion on that? I was guessing it has something to do with the algorithm used on the sites. Possibly having to do with the fact that the tourneys are on a time constraint? I'd love to hear what you have to say on this....Thanks!

I also would like to hear an opinion on this. I very rarely can survive buying into a tournament too late in the game. I usually, as a rule of thumb, will not buy into the tournament late, unless the chip stack which your are going to be starting with, is at least 20x BB. Otherwise, I just get pushed around by the big stacks, and basically you have to go all in and keep your fingers crossed. I noticed with rebuy/add on tourneys, the whole tournament kind of turns into an "all-in fest". At the beginning players are doing it to build their stack, towards the end of late reg, same thing. Then after the add-on, if you don't have a huge stack, you have to double up quite frequently to keep up with the blind raises, or you get blinded out pretty quick. It makes for a frustrating game with not much strategy...

Strategy for Deep Stacked 6-Max NLHE MTTs (All Stages)

Hi Ryan,

I've seen your tweets, and have learned lots from your posts. Also, I know this is not the topic of my reply, but as a bisexual male, you have been a huge role model that has inspired my self-confidence as a part of the LGBT community, as well as the poker community-at-large.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand: Deepstacked 6-Max NLHE MTT's (Starting stack: 125-150+BB). As you can already tell, I play a bunch of these on different sites, whatever is available in New York State. I bring this up because it feels like I'm not sure what I'm missing out of my game, but I know I must be making some sort of error that I can't put a finger on. When I play these, I will observe opponents' tendencies (Ex. Checking back a flop with most pre-flop raises after I call them on low rainbow boards), and how they react to various situations (Ex. Make a smaller raise on the turn [i.e. 20 into a pot of 1,300 on the turn after a flop bet of, say, 325, on the flop, that I call,]) than on the flop, let's say, on a rainbow 2-7-9 flop w/ a A on the turn. Additionally, I measure how I will play back at those tendencies based on reads I observe, and notes I take based on my observations. Although I have had success in cashing these tournaments, I realize that what seems to happen is that I run up a big stack early, and then, either due to a bad case of variance, or probably a mistake I made, I end up busting early.

Either way, I'm looking to improve on my 6-Max strategy, and realize that the only way to do so is through honest feedback. What are the most important pieces of advice you would give to players who endeavor to try out a 6-Max format? More specifically, early stages, middle stages, late stages, final table, etc.? Thanks in advance for taking the time to respond.

-Julian

Hi, hope to get some advice about late registering. This post is about online play.

First of all I'm 74 years old, so starting a tournament with a four or five hour late registering period is just s too much for me. I don't have the focus for how long of a tournament that it could be overall.

I'm a tight/aggressive player. In a tournament with a 12 minute blind levels how long can I wait to enter and still have enough chips to work with? How many blinds? Also how many blinds for a 10 minute blind tournament.
Thanks

Regarding the different platforms that exist to play poker, my question is whether pokerstar continues to be the best room of all or do you think any of the new ones is going to dethrone it? What do you think about Natural 8 that some people who know a lot say about it will become the best poker room in the world?

Good evening, everyone can tell me which tournament is best to play with a $ 39 bank

buy-ins from free roll up to $0.25.

Generally want to have 200+ buy-ins for the game you desire to play for tournaments.

100+ for normal sit and goes.

Start learning the general math and strategy behind decisions and focus on making good decisions.

That will help immensely with playing well and will lead to better results.

Rebuys and add ons are often profitable decisions to make, however they are often very high variance and much lower ROI in terms of %.

But, since each extra entry is essentially viewed as a new tournament, whether you are ok with taking on that increased risk for a low edge is entirely up to you.

I essentially view it though similar to registering for a turbo or hyper turbo.

Stars has plenty of good features, as does Natural8/GGpoker, but they each have issues.

I'd expect Party/Pokerstars are the safest to play on, but there are lots of reasonable options on the market.

pre-flop range vs limpers?

Hi there,

I have seen lots of advice about changing bet size for RFI when you have limpers, but I have not seen much advice on what your range should be.

When facing limpers, do we change from our RFI range? Do we get tighter similar to when we are facing a raise? What adjustments to our range should we make if there is more than one limper?

Thanks,

Steve
