They like horse races, I propose to follow a thread in this forum to give selections in different North American hypodromes such as Belmont, Gulfstream
Their is something relaxing about sitting in a betting shop drinking tea flicking through paper putting bets on big horse races like
grand national.
This thread takes me back to 1971. In my early twenties, I took a year's special leave to travel (1970/71). I wintered up and worked in London (Dec70 to Mar71). It snowed Christmas Eve and was my first and only ever white Christmas. But that's another story.
Right on top of my bucket list, horse racing wise, was a trip to see the Grand National. I can only remember three things about that day.
1. I bet on three horses in the Grand National (a main bet and two savers), and they all fell.
2. It was a surprisingly close finish.
3. I had a good day, thanks to an on-course tipster, who tipped three winners out of four races.
I could not remember the Grand National winner's name, so had to look it up. I found a you tube video of the race. Specify was the winner and the finish was exactly how I remembered it.
As for the tipster, he was selling the tips for 2/- (10 new pence) per race. I bet on his first three tips and they all won at reasonable
odds. His 4th tip was the red hot favourite, so I decided not to bet. Which was just as well, because it was unplaced. At the end of the day, I was up just over 100 pounds, a tidy sum of money, for 1971.
