What's wrong with Mike Goldberg? He's like the signature voice - "heeeere weee GO!"

Idk. I'm always the guy that doesn't understand complaints about sports commentators. So many people hate Cris Collinsworth but I literally don't get why.

Wow... if I were to go through all the reasons I couldn't stand Mike Goldberg we'd be here until UFC 300 :p

So here's just the first few that come to mind:
- "Virtually identical"
- "Herb Dean is our referee". Yes Mike. We know that because Bruce Buffer literally just finished saying it, and the on-screen graphics are confirming it. You saying it again is a tilting waste of oxygen.
- His sad-ass attempts to pronounce Joanna Jedrzejczyk
- The way that he still seems to know very little about the sport he commentates on, even after all these years
- The way he'll drivel on about garbage completely unrelated to the fight like he's not even watching. The infamous "it take a lot of energy to be a superhero", for example, about Rousey, something so stupid that Joe Rogan actually had to contradict him live on air

That said his one attempt at commentating NFL was hilarious in a falling on your face and making an ass of yourself way, I'd listen to him attempt that at least once more.

As to why people complain about commentators you're right, it's not the end of the world. Unless you want to turn the sound off you're kind of stuck with them though. And when you consider what a good commentator can add to the experience... and consider that the UFC already has several much better commentators than Goldberg on the payroll...

The spelling? Oh gawd yes. But pronouncing it isn't that hard, especially once you've been told how. And since Mike Goldberg's only job is saying words into a microphone, you'd think he'd be better at it by now... but my favourite part is how he's not even consistently wrong, he almost tries to make up a new version every time he says it.

Hendo said he's probably retiring regardless of the result of his match vs Bisping. That makes his title shot look even worse IMO. It's cool for short term hype, but best case scenario it has no long term effect on the division and worst case it makes it look completely awful if a 45 year old wins the title and retires. I just don't see the point when you have Weidman, Rockhold, and Jacare waiting.

I'm sure they're hoping that Bisping wins so he looks a little better as the champ before he gets beat up by any of the 3 better fighters you mentioned. It already looks bad enough that he beat Rockhold.

People like to root for winners and if all your winners keep losing it's tough to develop interest from casual fight fans. The UFC has lost a lot of casual fans lately with losses by Rhonda and Conner, the last thing they need right now is revolving champions in any division.

^ this. Exactly this. If you give him Weidman, Rockhold or Jacare and they crush him then it looks bad, like any schmuck can land a lucky punch and be middleweight champion of the world. Bisping looks bad, but by extension Rockhold and the belt look bad too. You end up with a mess like women's bantamweight is right now.

Aside from that Weidman is just coming off neck surgery so I don't think he's ready to go now anyway, and IIRC Jacare is carrying some kind of injury too (otherwise they prob would have put him in for the title shot instead of Bisping in the first place).

Plus I'm pretty sure if this was almost anyone other than Hendo they wouldn't be considering it. But he's such a legend in the sport and such a big fan favourite that I think they're gonna be given a pass on this one.

And Bisping-Hendo is probably the most sellable of the options too, especially if they do the fight in England. English fans will be much more inclined to shell out for tickets if they think their guy has a winnable fight.

I used to hate the Diaz brothers but now I kinda like Nate. He's entertaining as all hell and is a pretty decent fighter. His whole steroid tirade was on point. Every time someone tests positive they have an excuse. Does it matter if it was intentional? Worst case scenario they were cheating; best case scenario they were ridiculously careless with their careers.

And can't we just let athletes (especially fighters and football players) smoke weed already? When you get punched in the head for a living I think it's reasonable you should be allowed to relieve chronic pain without popping prescription painkillers.

Hmmm. Not really. I'm positive if you ask a polish person if your pronunciation is correct he is going to say no.
Is normal like Anderson Silva would say.
I'm sure the correct pronunciation of her name has some sounds that do not exist in the english language so any attempt is a waste of time.

It's kind of annoying how people pronounce Rafael Dos Anjos or Jose Aldo like they were mexicans, but I get it, people don't know how to pronounce brazilian names.

I honestly don't think it's essential that Rogan stays. Yes he is a great commentator and I'd certainly love him to stay but the UFC have done a great job at creating good commentators/analysts from current and former fighters. (DC, Cruz, Bisping and particularly Brian Stann to name a few). If he does decide to move on I think there will be a little outcry from the fans but firmly believe by 202 we'll have all moved on.

Joe rogan is prob the greatest commentator possibly ever, the UFC wouldn't be the same without him, they'd still excel but let's face it rogan is the voice of the UFC, period.

Sure there can quibbling over accents of whatever, but she's spelled out a perfectly acceptable version herself: "yen jay chick". None of those syllables are hard to pronounce.

But the point was more that saying names into a microphone is Mike Goldberg's job, you'd think he'd practice or get better at it or something. But nope, DGAF as far as I can tell :p

I know a lot of people don't like Rogan for whatever reason too. Personally I don't mind him, he's got a decent level of knowledge and brings good energy to his work most of the time.

Brian Stann is at least as good though, I wouldn't be that worried if they switched Rogan out and put Stann in.

Chad Mendes receives two-year suspension for anti-doping violation

Three-time UFC title contender Chad Mendes was handed a two-year suspension from USADA on Wednesday after testing positive for a banned substance following an out-of-competition urine test on May 17.

According to USADA, Mendes tested positive for GHRP-6 (Growth Hormone-Releasing Hexapeptide), which is listed as a Non-Specified Substance on the WADA Prohibited list.

Under the UFC Anti-Doping policy, which has adopted the WADA Prohibited List, any violation involving a Non-Specified Substance warrants a two-year suspension for first-time offenders.

Mendes' suspension will be backdated to June 10, 2016, the day he received a provisional suspension. He hasn't fought since a knockout loss to Frankie Edgar in December 2015, so he won't have to forfeit any wins or compensation. But he will lose his standing in the featherweight rankings.

"Money" will be 33 when his suspension is lifted in 2018.

So he was juicing and he still lost to Aldo (twice), McGregor and Edgar. That's really not a good look for him... I guess his best hope is that those guys are all gone from the division when he comes back?

Lol. When USADA caught some brazilian fighters
people were saying "brazilian fighters are cheaters"

Chad Mendes, Jon Jones, Brock Lesnar. So all americans are cheaters now?

...and Chael Sonnen, and Giblert Melendez, and BJ Penn, and Ben Rothwell, nd Alistair Overeem... the list goes on :p

I think the takeaway from this is that the sport as a whole has definitely had a PED problem for its whole existence, and USADA may be helping to clean things up but the job isn't done yet.

Yes, definitely this is the case. Good thing USADA came along and has been kind of cleaning the sport and making it harder to cheat and get away with it.

This PED problem is gonna get a whole lot worse before it gets better and we're seeing that now. UFC sold at the perfect time.

True

I think what you're also seeing is why all the other major American sporting codes (NFL, NBA, MLB, etc) administer their own testing programs rather than using WADA/USADA...

In other news, Holly Holm lost on the weekend and cost me money... again... dammit :p
