Ever since our American government took away our freedom and our right to play online poker on whichever site we choose to play on - we call it "Black Friday", April 15, 2011 which is more than a decade ago and still we cannot play real money poker on Poker Stars or any of the other major sites - I have refused to deposit a single penny onto a poker site.

But despite that stupidity from our government, I never lost my love of the game of poker... so after giving up the game for about 5 or 6 years, I eventually decided to get back into the game on what we call the "gray market" sites like ACR... however, since we Americans were left without any legal protection from our government if we have any problems on a poker site, I decided my best approach would be to create a challenge for myself by starting from zero dollars and using freerolls to try and build a bankroll from nothing. It has not only been extremely fun, it has also been quite successful, on one site I have turned my zero into four digits worth of bankroll, and I am able to play all the low stakes tournaments I want to play each day. Eventually I hope to play the highest stakes this way, but it is a slow process and it cannot be rushed, proper bankroll management is ALWAYS extremely important in such a challenge.

I also enjoy the fact that, since I never deposit and never withdraw, I owe no tax on any profits. Because of what our government did to us a decade ago, they do not deserve to profit off of my poker play... and therefore, they will never get one penny of tax revenue from me. Of course this means I'll never see any of the money I've won on the poker sites, but so what? I am perfectly okay with remaining poor, as long as I can play my beloved poker each day, that keeps me happy and content. There is much more to life than "being rich". If our government were nicer to us, I would gladly share some of my profits with them via taxation, but because they were such evil jerks, they will get nothing from me and that is also satisfying to me. It is my way of getting revenge on them, in a meaningless kind of way. :D

+1 except for the last part - I do withdraw eventually. Otherwise, why not just participate on playmoney/playchip games? I'll pay small tax if need be, but I'll collect some from my online winnings; what little I get is just more than I had before :D

If you are serious about online poker, you should be prepared to make some investments including an initial deposit, and this is, what I personally did. After all you are going to be spending a lot of time, and you need to make the best of that time, which you dont do by mainly playing freerolls. I am not surpriced by the result of the poll though. CC is very much a freeroll forum for better and worse :)

I play more freerolls. Now I make a deposit only if I really want to play a certain tournament, and I have 0 on my balance, but not more than once a month.

When I started in the pre-Moneymaker days, I deposited. I’ve had a lot of sites shut down while holding my money. Full Tilt is the only one that mailed me a check. I no longer deposit unless I really like the site and don’t mind losing the money.
If I want to make real money playing poker, I go to a casino.

Definitely a free roller. Heck, still trying to win back what I have lost. Naw, won't work.

Except of course there are those such as myself who have a specific free roll goal and that is why I called it a project above. In fact I started with one goal and met it quite quickly so made the next goal multiples of the original.

Now, that said, I want to let you know not only do I appreciate your posts...you made one of my favorite posts some time ago. I cut and pasted it and have it in my documents.

It was a lengthy post about transitioning from free rolls to buy ins and why it made sense. It not only made complete sense, it was great advice, period.

So, I use that post as a template to anticipate the transition for myself once I have achieved the free roll goal.

I've been playing freerolls lately. I decided that until I raise my level, I will not make deposits. I really need to cultivate discipline. Well, in general, sometimes I can afford to make a small deposit

I am in fully agree with you I think you should deposit if you're more serious with it cause you won't get that much of an opposition challenge from freerolls like you can against costly type poker tournaments.

I only play freerolls currently, more because its cheaper to play freerolls when you're relatively new and looking to improve.

I actually had my first ever paid place in the freeroll yesterday. It was only $0.20 but still... lol

I started to play online poker around 15 years ago and at that time it was very easy to build a decent bankroll from freerolls. I stopped to play for a couple years and came back to play regulary 1-2 years ago. I deposited a couple of times because there aren't many good freerolls now, but I still play them. I like to play the cardschat freerolls and the 888poker freerolls.

Mostly Deposit

I primarily deposit because of my goals; I shall explain.

Persons play differently in Freerolls than they do in pay-to-play tournaments; that is just a fact. In addition, playing too many freerolls can create poor habits for higher income to play games. In addition, there is the time vs. profit margins.

Playing with deposited money makes my mindset different, and any person’s mindset will be different when they’ve put something on the line. They say a man with nothing to lose is dangerous! A man has nothing to lose; with pay to play, everything is different.

Right there is no mental or financial consequence in freeroll poker.
