I might need a career change and since I'm single, and looking for a little more excitment, and love being in casinos I thought becoming a dealer might be a good move. However, I'm 46 years old and it seems like it might be an old age to start. I honestly have no idea. I have experienced a lot of agism in the tech industry and I wonder what it is like in a casino environment. Is this a good move? Please let me know your honest opinions and experiences. Thanks!
Age is definitely not an obstacle. However, dealing cards, especially in a casino, is not as easy as it might sound. Besides the technic side, the speed and the little math required to be able to count not only chips, but side pots and so on, a dealer must also know how to deal different variants. You haven't mentioned if you have any experience doing it. If yes, go for it man. It's a nice income and more importantly a lot of fun for someone who likes poker and casino environment. I've done it for about 7 years, really loved it.

I think if 46 is considered "too old" or heaven forbid "elderly" then we are all doomed....,
Ageism is certainly an issue in many western countries. So much knowledge and experience is wasted because employers prefer cheaper and younger. Once you are closer to fifty you are considered to be worse than nuclear waste.

But it doesn't hurt to ask. OP might get a chance to prove himself.

It seems that your only obstacle is yourself. Only you can determine whether or not you are able to physically and mentally handle it. If you can the go for it. Good luck.

I know where you’re coming from. After I lost my business at age 45, I couldn’t get a job in the software industry because I was considered to be too old. So I started working in a casino dealing blackjack, roulette, baccarat, and finally poker, which I dealt until age 65 when I retired.
So you are never too old to deal poker. If you are seriously interested in dealing then go for it.

Go for it! It sounds like fun and you could even be a traveling dealer with the wsop Circuit or other poker tours. Good luck!

In my experiences, and I think some people feel the same way, that once you get past your 20s, you feel like you're starting to get "too old" for things. You may feel like you're past your prime, at least I did. And I felt the same way when I reached my 40s. But at 43, I've realized you're never too old to shoot for a new goal or try a new hobby or career. If you have the time and energy, go for it!

It sounds like you have the desire so I'd suggest you ask yourself one question. That question is "Do I have the patience to deal with players who are angry, obnoxious, drunk, etc...?" Some players will get downright nasty and aggressive when it comes to losing money, and you will have to deal with them face to face. Whether or not I think that I could do that would be my prime consideration before going into that line of work.

Whatever you decide to do, I wish you the best! ❤️

I agree! If I were to go back in time and tell my 20 year old self what it will be like when she turns 70, she wouldn't believe me. :) In the past six years I've begun to play poker tournaments, drive Lyft/Uber, and in the new year I'm going to begin providing individual lessons to beginning shooters. I am loving my life! :)

You are still young...your age should not be a problem to start a new career.

It's better to take the first step now than to regret it tomorrow, it's never too late to start, in the poker house I go to, it's common to find a dealer
