odds are so unintuitive for human brains. The birthday paradox is a wonderful example that can easily verify this. Despite seeming impossible, it states In a room of just 23 people there's a 50-50 chance of at least two people having the same birthday. This comes from exponents and first person mind frame. We only see our own 22 match chances and not all 23 individuals match chances. Which turns out to be 253 match attempts in total. The issues of exponentials and first person bias causing counter intuitive answers is represented in multiplayer card games. This is 1 major reason poker can be difficult, but not the only reason. For another even more brain hurting example see the Monty Hall Problem. It takes a bit too long to explain here.

Poker.
You can learn the rules in a day.
It takes a lifetime to master it.

is so difficult to learn poker

It's even more difficult losing money you cannot afford to lose! I know many who will disagree, but the safest way to learn the game is to play the game, and start off with either Play Money or freerolls.
Sure they are different from playing with real Cash, but it gives you a grounding on how the game progresses, and how to limit your losses, I started off playing on my Facebook profile, and lost count how many mistakes I made, but I didn't care, It wasn't costing me anything, and I learned a lot of things through playing the Freerolls on pokerstars.
It takes time, but if you don't want the game to take all your money, It's the only way to learn.

It's true I play for fun and it gives me satisfaction when I win and the strategy has come with time

It's not difficult to learn the basics, the difficult part is to be a winner player. Because everyone knows the basic and I think at least 50% of the players also have a intermediate-level knowledge, so, it's not easy to be a winner player.

It is difficult for those who think that by learning to play poker they will win all the time. You need to prepare for the fact that you will lose or fold your promising hand quite often. And treat this as a necessary evil. It is very difficult psychologically to play by chance, especially when you see that others succeed with a very low probability...

is so difficult to learn poker
I started playing poker about 6 years ago. I didn't find poker difficult when I started and I don't find it difficult now, after 6 years of playing. Poker itself is not a difficult game at all. The only thing that is difficult is to remain a patient and disciplined player.

Poker is not difficult to learn. You will need to know the basics and play in many tournaments and what is important is to apply a style in our game. And of course the sychology:) And then if we can manage our good cards and release them from time to time, we can say that poker is not a really difficult game.:geek:;)

I think a lot of people think it is difficult to learn because they see people on TV winning $$$$$$'s and thinking how cool it would be to give up the day job and become a professional poker player. What most people fail to consider is how much work and effort went into winning that hand or tournament, not to mention the money.

Most people spend 10-12 years in education. Why do people think they can read a book or two and think they should be rubbing elbows with Negreanu and Chidwick?

I have played poker for many years but still each time I play something new happens, I guess what I am trying to say is that you will never be prepared for all the different situations you end up in, but the situations you have been in before will help you and the more experience you get, the more you learn how to handle a situation the next time you are in it.

Poker is difficult because it’s a game that combines multiple skill sets, each requiring time and effort to master. Here are a few reasons why it challenges even the best players:

  1. Incomplete Information: Unlike chess, where all the pieces are visible, poker is a game of incomplete information. You’re constantly trying to make the best decision based on limited data about your opponents’ hands and tendencies.
  2. Variance: Short-term luck plays a significant role, and even when you make the right decisions, you can still lose. Managing the emotional ups and downs of variance is one of the hardest aspects of the game.
  3. Psychological Warfare: Poker is as much about reading your opponents as it is about playing your cards. Developing the ability to spot bluffs, understand betting patterns, and exploit psychological weaknesses takes years of practice.
  4. Adapting Strategies: No single strategy works against all opponents or in every situation. You need to constantly adjust based on factors like stack sizes, table dynamics, and individual player styles.
  5. Evolving Meta: The game keeps evolving as players discover new strategies and techniques. Staying ahead requires continual study and adaptation.
What makes poker so rewarding is that mastering these challenges leads to immense satisfaction. The difficulty is what makes the victories feel earned and keeps us coming back to improve. What do you think is the toughest part of poker?

The overall simplicity hides a lot of strategies, variations and unknowns...
