To Chase or Not To Chase?

I have learned to consider a "chase" from all angels, before I call that bet!

How much is this bet? Calling a HUGE bet on a draw is NOT SMART!

Consider this, What do you THINK the bettor is holding?

And, if I miss, will I call again, or not?

I used to chase much more than I do now. I have flopped and missed too many open ended straight draws and flush draws to call these BIG BETS!

Now I fold most of these chases against big bets. I would rather wait until "it is my turn" and I have already made a hand!

To Play or Not to Play

Never play a hand that you wouldn't normally play if the cards weren't suited. Too many people seem to overvalue those 'soooooted' cards. The possibility of a flush really adds very little value. Thank you, Miss Annie Duke, for pointing this out to me!

Playing Unpredictably Can Be Good

Good players can figure out a loose player by waiting for the nuts. Even easier opponent is a “rock”, (a.k.a. "tight player") , who plays only Group 1 type hands. From time to time I like to change my game up, and let them see I can run bluffs, and can play some lower value starting hands. The changes should be subtle and should not dramatically affect the flop rate.

Never show anyone your cards for free. Its tempting after a bluff, and its even more tempting after you tell the truth and your opponent folds but the mystery is worth more than the immediate satisfaction of showing.

Plus then you can say "It would have only cost X$ to find out SUCKA!"

(I would not recommend calling people suckers at brick and mortar casinos, save that for bodog)

#1. odds are a way to go broke with confidence.
Know the odds, you know how strong your hand is, but unless you have the absolute nuts, you can always be beaten. How many times have you seen that piss poor hand that no one should have kept pre-flop, much less put any money on, take the pot by sucking out on the river.

#2. There is no such thing as Pot Committed unless you've gone all in. You can always fold and walk away, no matter how many chips you've pushed to the middle.

Pot committed is mental. Your opponent wants you to "think" your pot committed so he can get more of your chips. You want someone else to "think" they are pot committed so you can get more of their chips. Play your cards first, play their cards next, don't ever play "Their" mental games.

If I am only gonna play $2 then why not my odds of doubling are greatly increased and if I bust no big deal that is only once in a while

Play at limits you are most comfortable playing at. I’m not referring to the size of your bankroll, although that should also be a consideration. Simply, if you are playing at limits above your comfort zone then you will play too ‘tight’ and if you are playing at limits below your comfort zone you will not feel challenged enough and will play too ‘loose’.

NEVER play poker for play money. However small your wager may be, the game loses a dimension without one. When you decide to play for real money some day, you will have incorporated so many bad habits into your game that you will end up losing more money than had you just learned on micro-limit tables to begin with.

Poker is a game of information and finding out where you stand in a hand. The best way to do that is with continuation bets and probe bets. By just checking or calling you miss the boat on finding out where you stand and the information you need on where your opponent(s) are at in the hand.

When calculating your chances of winning the pot, especially at tables with calling stations, look at it as you vs. everyone else and not your chances vs. opponent #1's chances vs. opponent #2's chances. If a lot of people are in the hand, then your chances of winning naturally decrease and are most likely small, even if you individually hold the best hand, since the sum of all your opponents' percentages combined likely is probably far greater.

So don't be afraid to call with small hands like 67 when everyone folds(your percentages go up) and fold big hands like AJ when everyone at the table is intent on playing their hand(especially if you know your opponents are LAGs and cannot be pushed out of pots with raises).
