I went to a former neighbors house, they taught me how to play, the value of hands (flushes, straights, pairs, trips etc.). He payed for my buy-in because I had never played before. I was doing well and winning but don't remember if we finished this game. This was many many years ago. At least in the range of 12 to 13 years ago. I was around 15-16-17 years old back then.
After this came many shorthanded games with 5-6 players usually with my neighbors. We each paid $1 or $2 to play and it was usually hold em and as we played more and more we started playing omaha and omaha hi-low. Usually 1st and 2nd would get paid and third got his buyin back. That was our rules. We played almost every week sometimes more than once a week or once a night. We really played a lot of poker back then. I actually enjoyed poker back then. It's quite different to play with your friends live for a buck or two when you're 16 vs. playing in a computer screen where you don't know anybody and conversation and fun are minimal or at least reduced when compared to genuine fun.
