Why are turbo's more popular than regs???

I've been playing SNG's on bovada again the last few days and I've noticed that the low stakes turbo's are much more popular than the regular speed tournaments. I can't understand why though. The turbo's are much more of a gamble because you have no time to employ any consistent strategy imo and therefore find yourself coin flipping with less than awesome hands. And everyone that plays them seems more than willing to gamble. These people won't fold if their lives (tournament lives) depended on it. It's annoying to me because i prefer the regular speed ones and sometimes I'm forced to play these; if i want to play that is.

There are more turbo's, and mostly low buy ins are in turbo structure so i am mostly forced to play turbo. I personally prefer regs or even deepstacks. Turbo is also more luck based. Altho i hate to use the word luck in poker and i must add there are people specialised in turbo's and hypers. I even think they are harder to play. Maybe it is also because people are impatient and rather not play 5-12 hour tournaments.

It all depends on the type of player you are, but my style I love the hyper and reg turbo's.. Before I stopped playing at bovada I would win about 75 percent of the hypers 9 man 300 chips... you are right it is a gamble, and it forces people to play differently, well since I like it I play gambling hands and it works for me. It all depends on your style.

Good reasons stated above as to why turbos are more popular than regs, but there's another reason I've noticed. More of them are offered at micro and low stakes. Look at pokerstars for example. I have the lobby for SNG up now and out of 15 games registering, 10 are turbo. In the micro tourney lobby, if it's not a player cap game, it's 70% turbo. Now is that due to demand, or just because that's what Stars is pushing on us? My guess it's a chicken/egg scenario.

I prefer reg format tourneys, but I also enjoy a turbo when time is a little tight and I still want to get a game in.

These are all good points I suppose. I had success in the past playing the $28 turbos but not so much in the $13 turbos. Everyone is way, way too eager to gamble for my liking. It's like fold equity doesn't exist at these stakes.. I'm trying to avoid playing them because of a lack of options but sometimes i can't resist..

Well i think reg speed is not so good for micro stakes mtts.... imagine 0.27$ game with 5k entrants with deepstacks and normal speed.... who wants to play 10 hours just to finish 50th place for less than a $...
For sngs its rake rake rake! More sngs per day more moneyz to the house also most people love quick money... i am ok with any speed,but i dont like normal micro mtt(cap games on stars) its just too much time for small prize..

players more used turbo tournaments are recreational players, because their jobs do not allow them to have more time for a STANDARD tournament apart there parents the time with your children does not allow them that luxury to play for more than 2 hours, I hope to serve you very point!

More good points guys.. I don't play such low stakes or mtt's lately so the time it takes is more than worth it to me. Not so much lately as I haven't been winning much lol. I figured more rec players play turbos and I'd love to take advantage of that but with all the flipping that goes on in turbos it requires a little run good. Which i don't have lately.

I like both turbo and regular although they definitely play very differently. Much less play in the early levels of the turbos and many of the players tend to be much more aggro pre-flop, willing to flip early.

As was said before the lure of the turbo is that sometimes I don't feel like playing a 6 hour tournament for $20 bucks if I make the final table.

Its not just rec players.... thats a stupid theory.... jorj95 is ps pro and he plays mostly hyperturbo sngs...
Hypers and turbos are all about preflop play...
While normals have more post flop play,i played a lot of 180 man hypers,its a shove fest,8 players go allin with any 2? Hell yeah and 62o takes the pot
I like that format tbh,and i am enjoyin playing it

Because there action packed and the money comes quick. Sometimes you just don't want to be sat there for 4 hours on end to pick up some small change when you can sit there for 3 hours instead and pick up some tasty racks.

I hear you.. I'm still playing some turbos here and there but I prefer the regs.. How likely is it that any pro's play stakes as low as $14 9man SNG's? It seems unlikely to me but I could be wrong. I play on Bovada so there's no way to tell..

first the games are shorter, and the regs have less of an edge in turbos, but if you are a reg- your win per hr is probably bigger .....so thats why the fish and the regs like the turbos

I like turbos better because I like the blinds to go up...I don't like 9 or 10 handed limp-fests, and my playstyle leans toward having people make decisions for more of their money.

time is money, so if I'm going to play a $1 tourney where I stand to win a maximum of $4.50 I don't want to spend 90 mins of my time earning profit of just $3.50.

I feel in these games, my real edge comes in around ICM knowledge and exploiting the bubble with a superior push/fold strategy to most low stakes fish. The "pace" of these turbo tourneys tends to happen in such a way that my usual stack size at the bubble is perfect for shoving over the top of 1 limper or 1 min raiser and still be a +$EV shove whether or not they call me. I find that in regular speed tourneys, because it is a much slower structure it takes a lot longer for me to be able to exploit this tendency.

Higher variance is more tolerable at lower stakes. I would also like to play turbo SnGs at higher stakes, but feel the variance is too high and the players too skilled to make it profitable for me. But, I do have some success in $20-$40 live turbo SnGs because the players are just as bad as $1-$5 turbo players....the problem is the variance hurts a lot more at $40 a pop compared to $1 a pop.

Yeah, variance can be a bish.. I've been using BRM to make sure I don't bust myself. I think my shoving/calling ranges are pretty solid but I'm not an ICM expert. I understand it but the math behind it is far too complex for me to do on the fly. I play triple up sng's. Can you help me to understand how the ICM affects the value of your chips when on the bubble and the winners all chop? Sometimes, I feel like I might shove too wide considering that in these tourney's I'm just trying to make top three, not first..

Indeed, stealing is key. Since everyone knows this the blinds are defending themselves with sometimes weak hands at the stakes I play. Which does make things pretty chaotic but most of them tighten up around the bubble. Do you think that's a good move to make it into the money? Or is it a better move to take advantage of the tight table around the bubble?
