i didn't mean to start this thread just to flame jamie gold, so i hope it wasn't taken that way. i do agree that he got some very lucky hands in some taylor-made-to-win situations, but that is necessary to win, as many have said already. and like a few of us said, he did have some skill at getting opponents to make the desision that he wanted them to make. he really did talk a good game, and played very good big-stack poker.

the main event is such a different beast than it was 4 years ago, and moneymaker's win was the single largest contributor to that fact. with the size of the field that is generated now, it is more and more likely that random players are going to get deep in the tournament. now the pros don't just have eachother to watch out for, but they have to play against luck and chance to a much greater extent.

NP from me Alurone, we are all entitled to our opinions, and I suppose with all the reactions, ESPN are doing their job.

So when a pro wins and bitches and moans and cries like a baby about donks, it's okay because he's a pro. But when an amateur wins, and outright beats the crap out of his opponents and he is shown on a TV show partially indicating things that have gone on for 14 hours, well then he's just a douche bag? Guess we have more homework to do. (Lest we not forget that Gold was the chip leader since day four and never once gave it up from that point on - hmm sounds like shitty play to me.)

And the sad part about this is that I'm not even a fan of Jamie Gold. But simple characterizations and suppositions based on seriously limited knowledge is just plain silly. Have your opinion, but take a pill with it.

JD, I really don't know if you're trying to stir the pot or you're just indifferent to Mr. Gold but i find your comments fascinating. I'd encourage you to read the full tilt message boards (sorry if mentioning a competitor is not kosher). There were plenty of people who paid to watch the PPV and still made the comment about how lucky he was. So it sounds like ESPN did a pretty good job of depicting his play. Did you also notice every player at the final table pretty much called him lucky. They were there for all of those hours too...I just think it's too much of a coincidence.

As far as pros whining about bad beats...outside of Hellmuth, I really can't think of one. There was Raymer last year after Kanter hit the flush on him. But all he said was "you hit a miracle on the river" and "you tried to give me your chips" Even when Ivey took his brutal beat to Moneymaker, he didn't say boo either. I'm sure there are pros that do complain but I struggle to find a lot of examples to support that comment you made.

PS- thanks for letting me know about the comment Lon and Norman made in regards to Gold's comments. I missed that when I was watching it!

Um, yeah, exactly. The fact that he NEVER ONCE lost the chip lead from day four is one of the main things that point to an incredible run of luck, the way I see it.

Anyway, I pretty much agree with all that was said by medeiros. A number of players made comments about Gold's luck and they were there the whole time.

Also, nobody's saying you don't need luck to win the thing. I don't know why people keep pointing out that a great amount of luck is required. I assure you every one of us knows this.

Medieros, it isn't about stirring the pot. I wasn't there. I didn't watch the live coverage. Just watching the ESPN 85 minute coverage, listening to banter that only happened during that 85 minutes, and reading posts of people on another site that claim they watched the live final table just isn't evidence to me. I'm sure we can go out and find plenty of posts from people that watched the live final table and liked Jamie Gold, too. So I don't believe it is coincidence at this time, I think it is editing. This is how the world of reality TV works, and that's all that poker is, reality TV.

And my reply regarding pros was response to a comment that it was better to watch Hellmuth with his ego.

Jamie Gold played well (who couldn't with the cards he caught), but he talks like an asshole and looks like one too with that smart-ass grin, breaking the rules numerous times, it's too bad no one knew them or called him on it. His table demeanor is irritating and obnoxious. This guy's one step above Varkonyi in his play (ok, maybe he's not that bad. lol), we won't see him getting anywhere near the final table in the future....not to mention the fact he didn't play in the TOC for some reason. I guess they only let in "true" champions. lol

they ran the tournament of champions in the end of june before the series got started this year, so he wasn't a champion yet. not sure why they did it that way this year, but that's why he didn't play in it.
