Of course, probability theory is not wrong)

I think it's luck, there's no variance.

Of course, I think there is variance in the game since sometimes I tend to have a negative variance, one ends up losing hands that you practically won and we are all subject to this variance, both negative and positive.

Dude... Yes, it exists because it is a mathematical concept.

Look under 'probability and statistics' for concepts like standard deviation, expected value and everything else...
Maybe it will help you understand the concept behind the word 'variance'.

But in short, it's just about "how far" in general your results deviate from the expected value.
Further, as a player you are constantly evolving your game!

Do you believe in variance? Honestly they keep telling me it's true. Funny, I spent some time with a decent player who insisted it was true.. He took some time away, and now calls BS. Long run short run, you win, you lose...variance to me is a made up thing.
Well, I think that this is already answered, but I'll try to contribute to the fact that Variance is a math and statistic concept, not just a poker excuse.

As much as we would like it, dispersion in poker still exists and I think that many players have felt it for themselves!!!

Yes, of course variance is real. There's no doubt about that. But sometimes I think that bigger stacks with equal chances of winning are more likely to succeed. But a lot depends on the poker room, really. For example, I so often see wild runs at pokerstars (flush and straight with 1st card or smaller pocket pairs beating higher pocket pairs), while at 888 I feel 100% comfortable, where although there are runs, but with adequate probability. The same can be said about GGPoker, where I don't feel unfairness and the feeling that the poker room allows fishes to win with a higher probability than it really is.

In poker, as in life, perception is everything. Some players believe in luck and try to attract it in every way. Others believe in mathematics and continue the endless grind.Variance is luck or bad luck in mathematical terms. By calculating variance, you can really see the impact of luck in a particular discipline. If you are destined to fail to win in a AA all-in 15% of the time, then you are bound to be in that sample. That is the game.

Variance is a measure of, how far a set of numbers is spread out from their average value. Like if we flip a coin 10 times, the average outcome will be 5 tails and 5 heads, and sometimes this is also the result, we will see. But there is also a pretty high likelyhood of seeing 6 heads and 4 tails or 4 heads and 6 tails. There is a lower likelyhood of seeing 7 heads and 3 tails or 3 heads and 7 tails. And finally there is a very low likelyhood of seeing 10 heads and 0 tails or 0 heads and 10 tails. This is basically, what variance means. So asking, if someone believe in it or not, is a bit like asking, if someone believe in winter and summer or in day and night. It makes very little sense, and perhaps this thread was as aprils fools joke posted a day to late? :)

I don't know if this is a variance or not, but very often I play for many days without any progress, and then on some day I constantly get good cards, I get to the table.
