I think you already answered your question. It all comes down to one's schedule.
A recreational player, one who has a job other than playing poker cannot be able to compete with a pro who has a set schedule to play. Some, if not all the pros, play at least 8 hours a day, 6 days.

I work a lot too, 10 to 12 hours every day, but I still find 3-4 hours to play after work, although sometimes it's hard and on those days I just take a break.
