Just a thought.

We have come to the conclusion that a high % of the guys on this site are winning players. Therefore, when chatting up the girls we can tell them we are semi pro poker players (just don`t get into a conversation about the size of the stakes we play!!!)

As i said - Its what you want to tell people and what you leave out. :D

My first site I played at was partypoker....$100 total in deposits...won another $25~$50 playing freerolls...was down to under $10 when booted so for PPoker I'm way, way down.

PacificPoker: Never deposited. Placed deep in a freeroll...played for 3~4 months with that cash...got booted with under $1 left...so plus $0.80 there.

Titan: Again...no deposit. Won some freerolls. Played for months...had a nice bankroll...lost almost all of it...again under a $1 when kicked off (played real loose at the end 'cause I knew I was gettin kicked and was below the minimum withdraw level) so a plus $.23 there

Nobel: Got $5 free bankroll, won a freeroll or two....learned to play limit rather well...donks and the rake wittled me down to less than $1 when booted

bodog: No deposit yet. No wins for $$$ yet.

AbsolutePoker: Signed up with a $50 free bankroll...earn another $50 clearing points hand it up to around $175.00... got real, real loose in my play and tanked it all... won a bunch of freerolls and still have $0.80 in my account so up...but not enough to count

So all in all, I've played a LOT of cards for $$ (about 2 years worth) for the cost of about a six pack per month

I'm up in Live Casino, down majorly in Online

I just recently reviewed my bankroll log, which I must admit I don't review as often as I should.

I'm happy to say in all the time I've been playing at live casinos I am up. But I calculated that in 65 hours in the last 12 months playing in live casinos I make about $11/hr. Wow, I can quit my day job...heh....

I did all my learning online and made lots and lots of mistakes, so I am down alot in online play (I calculated with 950 hrs of logged online poker time within the last 24 months, I lost about $3.25/hr) ....which is probably why I like playing in live casino poker rooms so much...more success for me there.

I don't play as much online so much, as you can guess why...but when I do play, my favourite room is the Poker Room, but I play on party poker and pacific poker alot. Occasionally I play on Ultimate Bet...that is my 2nd favourite online site.

Cheers,
Vegas Cat

Do we count bonuses are far as to whether or not we are winning players? As far as I'm concerned, bonuses are the equivalent of rakeback, and absolutely need to be factored into whether or not we are winning players.

When I was able to do Party's monthly reloads the last couple of years, did I care if I played 700 hands in 3-4 hours, and lost $20 at $25 O/8 or NLHE while earning $100 in bonuses? Not at all - I certainly wasn't paying $100 in rake, so I'm way ahead of the deal.

Considering that I've withdrawn over 8K in while never risking 1 dollar of my own money, I really couldn't give a fukk what the stats might say - I'm a winning player.

I am down down down down down down down down down online. even when i come up i donk it away and im back down.

i dont mind really just because i do really well in live games at my local casino. its wierd how losing 20$ here and there online is no big deal because i win 100$ here and there when i go out.

I find myself playing onine for fun or to pass time and when im in a casno its like play time is over and its time to get serious.

I have to admit for me playing people in person is better because i dont make completely idiotic moves on a regular basis (such as when jesuslederer knocked me out of the 10$ buying saterday with trip KKK beating my bullshit sandwich)

online i am down at least 500$ but thats it because i stopped depositing. now i only play freerolls and only play with my freeroll winnings because i am too imature to make a deposit into my account when i am up.

i would say overall i am a winning live cash game player but thats just a guess, i dont keep records. HOWEVER IF MY LIVE WINNINGS ARE JUST FLUSHED DOWN THE ONLINE TOILET I GUESS IM ABOUT A BREAK EVEN PLAYER :(

IF I NEVER DEPOSIT ONLINE AGAIN I AM A WINNING PLAYER!

interesting thread.... let's see if i can come up with something here to guage exactly how much i have lost since november 2004....

in november 2004 deposited $600 at Paradise, went broke there in april 05 with no cashouts, mainly playing 5/10 Limit while learning the game. ok, so in about 5 months i lost my initial deposit of $600.

started playing at full tilt in april 05 because of their %100 bonus. however, due to poor bankroll management and trying to play with the big guys, i lost big. can't remember how much i lost there, but an estimate would be $3,000 from april through june 05. plus, i never claimed much bonus from them because of their toght policy of acquiring so many points and the fact that i was losing my deposits too fast to really build any points. ok, so far down $3,600 in about 6 months.

royal vegas would be my next stop, roughly around june 05. can't really remember how much i went through there, but i do know that it was the first place i cashed out. i remember cashing out $600, and a couple hundred more later on, then they disabled my account because there was a problem with my personal information. i got mad and quit playing there. it's safe to say i pretty much broke even there. so still down $3,600.

the next stop was doyle's room, where i switched from playing mainly limit to NL. again, due to poor bankroll management, i went through about $1500 on that site toward the end of 05. all right, now we're down $5,100.

i discovered bodog in november 05. made an initial deposit of $500, lost it all on a single bet of football, and have never looked back. also played on poker stars, making the max deposits of $600 on a number of occasions while depositing $2,000 at a time on bodog. so in 05 i lost about $5,000.

2006 wasn't much better. fianally, around june of 06, i was forced to make smaller deposits of $400, then $200..... you get the idea. a conservative estimate for money lost in 2006 would be $20,000, minus a few withdrawals that i made. so, in a lttle over 2 years i have lost about $25,000, but that also includes casino and sportsbook wagering.

the biggest problem? playing outside my bankroll, and playing during times of boredom and drunkenness. getting bore with poker and hitting the blackjack tables for 500 a pop. betting way too much on sports.

so yeah, back on topic, i have lost about $25,000 in 2 years....

I guess you could say I'm currently a break-even player. I've been both up and down overall recently. In live tournaments I'm down several hundred; up several hundred in online MTTs and SNGs; down a bit in online cash games; and haven't played cash games much live so down about 12 bucks there. This is over the course of a year and a half.

All I can say is I don't care about sites you can go to track people, I have my own tracking system (notes) I don't use any other equipment other than my own mind. I was a freeroll whore and very good at it. But since being with these members I've learned alot more on top of it. So I have to say i'm ahead of the ball game by a few hundred a (month). :}

I was around the break even point for ages and recently have gone up bout 300 bucks but for the size of my deposits i am doing good as i never deposited more than 50 bucks at a time untill my last deposit yesterday when i put on 100 and now i have 300 so im a winning player when i play properly. All my stats show i am up bout 200 in sngs and the same in mtts and in cc tournies i have an roi of 400% so im happy with my play.

I was a losing player till i found cc but now have made up my losses and am in the black again:D

This is my first post after browsing for a while but it's an interesting thread as it's a topic I've wrestled with recently.

I hadn't played poker in about 6 months after never being more than a casual player. I logged on to party right before Christmas and had about $50 left in my account. I played a few $22 SNGs which I had never played before and quickly got my account up to about $500.

Turns out this was beginner's luck as I quickly lost it all. Since then I've taken poker a bit more seriously but not quite serious enough. I've logged about 45 hours since Christmas and am currently down $253 overall.

The one good thing I've done is tracked all of my sessions.

The bad are playing a lot of games while drunk and doing really stupid things like taking my short term SNG winnings and rolling in to longshot $55 MTTs or $33 MTTs. I've made some small deposits over the past month or so as well.

Overall, I've had really bad bankroll management and bad decisions of when to play..when bored, drunk etc.

I think if I buckled down and only played during the right times and in the right frame of mind as well as manage my bankroll properly, I'd be a profitable or at least break even player. The next step is to do that.

Thanks for the thread..interesting read!

Start bit of a rant.

A couple of people have said things to the effect that they are a winning player when they play properly/concentrate/aren't drunk/aren't mucking about/play within their bankroll etc.

If you are playing for fun and don't mind hits to the bankroll then this is fine and dandy, but I would suggest that being a winning player when you are playing your 'A' game is relatively straightforward. The tricky part is not playing drunk, or at the wrong level, or getting bored and playing too many hands, or playing tired or on tilt.

It took me a long while and a lot of variance in my bankroll to realise that making excuses for my poor play by saying it didn't count for one reason or another was hurting my game. There's plenty of players with a great A game who because they can't manage a bankroll or because once a week they play and drink are losing players. Avoiding these drains on cash is as important as selecting the right cards or knowing the odds.

Just to say again if you play for fun or at levels where you are not concerned with the ups and downs then the above doesn't apply, the profit in the game is the enjoyment of it, but a winning player is truly someone who has won more from the game than they have lost since the first hand they were dealt.

End bit of a rant.

Since this is right after my post, I'll assume some of it is aimed at me.

I agree with your rant and just want to clarify that I by no means consider myself a winning player. Having been playing just over a month, I consider all of the money I spend the cost of an education.

I am however pleased that I'm *only* down a little over 2 bones considering I haven't taken the step to try to be a winning player or take the game seriously. Right now it's just for fun and getting educated and I'm relatively happy that I'm finishing in the money 29.8% of the time and and my education has only cost $259 so far considering I have really sloppy bankroll management and play drunk most of the time.

The amount I've learned with that $259 is incredible and I realize the giant holes in my game that I need to fix if I ever do want to be a profitable player.

Just wanted to clarify.

No matey not aiming at anyone, at my early poker self as much as anything.

I got really lucky when I started and won $4000+ in an MTT and lost the lot learning how to play. I had zero bankroll management, played SnGs above my level and generally was very naive. I cringe now when I look back at how I managed my play even after I developed a reasonable game at the table.

And welcome to the forum :)

Yeah..I hear ya.

Amazing how stupid I get when I go on a winning streak. Start playing way above my bankroll. First thing I have to fix.

I'm really glad that I decided to track my games when I started playing again. It's been a great tool to analyze my foolishness.
