I apologize if this has been asked already, but I am new here.

I feel that tilt is the biggest problem that a lot of small stakes players (myself included) face. I know many people that I think have the skills to progress into the mid and high stakes games, but are stuck playing small stakes due to the mental aspect of the game. I know that it is really hard for me to keep a cool head when I move up in stakes and run bad.

My question to you is how do you deal with tilt and what tips do you have for players that are "stuck" playing small stakes due to issues with tilt and emotional control rather than fundamental problems in their poker game.

I would say Dusty plays mostly Pokerstars and seems to like most everything about the site. It's like joining any club or site ,golf club, poker site ,church, wedding , or Family reunion . You will always disagree with something that you join or go to its not going to be 110% your way even if you owned it. We should be fortunate enough just to have him responding
for free and giving us tips on our game.

Dusty, I was watching you last night (now that you're a Pro it's easy to find the tables that you're sitting at). Two questions, if I may:

1) you were sitting at one FR table. Do you play much FR?

2) most tables were 5/10, but one was 10/20 and you were sitting with 50 bbs when I opened it up. You stayed at that stack size for a while until you got all in with the nut flush diamond draw against a set. The river gave you the flush but gave him a boat, and then it looked like you auto-rebought to the max. Do you not use auto-rebuy to the max all the time?

Hi Dusty, there's a new poker room opening up shortly that plays with a real deck of cards, shuffled by a machine and then added to the system as a playable deck that can be cut before play.

Do you think this is a new land mark for poker rooms? or a fad that will just prove that RNG is just as good?

" While SSing is annoying to most of us, it's still a legal and arguably legit strategy that, thus far, is tolerated by the sites. I suspect that FT (and potentially PS) addressed the SS situation as they've done simply due to the outcry from a lot of reg/deep players. They didn't actually ban SSers, they just gave 'em their own sandbox to play in.."

Would you care to expand upon the definition of their own sandbox ? I don't play at FT.

Thanks... Roy

:icon_thum Congrats on the 16th/36,299 finish in today's PS Sun 1/4 Mil Dusty! Very nice considering you're a Cash Game specialist! With multi-tabling Ring & Tourneys, are you finding yourself making more adjustments than you normally would when multi-tabling Ring exclusively?

Dusty - Now that it is about 99% certain that UIGEA will not be extended past June 1st, 2010 - are you personally making any arrangements - as in opening up separate accounts at other banks, etc. - just in case? Also, how do you think this will affect online poker in the U.S.?

It will be easier for Dusty to answer questions in this thread if it is not constantly de-railed by conversations between members. :)

I deleted some of it -was all friendly stuff - just doesn't belong in this thread. Other topics can be discussed elsewhere.

And adding on to this question. What should U.S. players be prepared for after this? After all, this should make it extremely hard to deposit on poker sites right? The banking industry will be locking down on online poker deposits right?

Hi Dusty. This is my first post here tho I have been following this entire thread. I think it's great that your taking the time to answer questions here. I just noticed on your blog that DTB is offering a free 30day trial with the purchase of your book. I was wondering if that includes those of us that have already purchased it? BTW I thought it was a great read and it has given me the motivation to (hopefully) grind my way to a sucessful career. ;) I'm up to 2000+ hands/day. I've also wondered if you could share your thoughts on BR mgmt while you were starting out. The 100 BI rule seems a little much begining at the micro's on a limited budget.

Thank You...

HI Dusty,
How many ring game tables do you think can be played at one time sucessfully without using poker tracker devices?? Did you have poker tracking devices when you started out???

How small an edge do you shoot for?

For instance if something is 51:49 in your favour do you get the money in or do you look for a better spot?

#474

If that is my only option (as in I don't have a play that will yield a higher EV) then I will absolutely take it. I will get all the money in a 51-49 favorite for a pot up to about $5k prob.

I apologize if this has already been asked.

Did you start your online poker career with cash games or SNG's? Why did you start with one or the other?

#475

I started at .25/50 LHE and $5 SNGs. I started playing for a living at 2/4 limit holdem in 05' 8 tables at once mostly making the bonuses/rakeback

how do you choose tables? Also, how long will you stay at a table if you're card dead?

#476

I get on all of the lists and if the game looks good, I sit. If I am card dead it is irrelevant to my game selection.

I completely agree with you. In fact I agree with you so much that I included 5 chapters in my book, Treat Your Poker Like A Business that were guest written by my friend and mental game expert, Jared Tendler, dedicated to tilt control at the tables. I feel one of the best parts of the book are those chapters (I think chapters 22-26 if I am not mistaken). If anyone is interested in checking it out you can get the book at http://www.dustyschmidt.net or on Amazon.

I would love to answer your question directly, but I am not really qualified to do so since I think it is a highly important question best left to qualified professionals such as Jared Tendler. If anyone wants to ask him about it I think he takes questions at http://www.Jaredtendlerpoker.com or you can learn more about it in depth in my book.

Sometimes I buy in for only 50BB when the weaker player at the table has only a 50BB or less stack. There is really not a ton of sense in buying in for more as I am essentially just swapping money around with the better players at the table and we are all just "living" off the weaker opponent's money anyway.

THe reason I prob bought back in for full is that it was probably the weaker opponent I doubled up lol. Guess that plan didn't work out too well on that day haha.

I know you don't play that many tourneys (although you have started to recently for wsop practice), and now don't play on FT, but how do you feel about late registration for tournaments?

The way I look at it is this... If you can't get there by the start time, then oh well, sucks to be you. I get tired of registering for a tourney because it looks like a good overlay only to see another 300 people buy in before the late registration is up. And I would say about 90% of those were just waiting to see how many were signed up before start time, not because they just happened to come home from work and notice that there was a tourney happening.

I don't see it now but a few weeks ago it was posted on his site that he was no longer accepting poker site transfers. Probably has something to do with his becoming a poker stars team member.
