Welcome to CC Ryan.

Just one small question. What is your opinion,is poker a game that depends on skill or luck or maybe both?

Short term: Luck mostly, but skill plays a large part.

Long term: Skill only.

Anytime you play poker you should only be worrying about how well you played and if you could have played better based on the information you had available. If you could play better, work on why you didn't.

MSPT's are the best..

We don't like to mention the Venetian around these parts since Adleson is well to put it nicely.. A douche

=O

Welcome to the Forum it's always good ot have a MTT player to hush up WVH and his ring games :p

I understand and respect why people desire to not play at the venetian, however I also see nothing wrong with playing there. (No real other options for mtt's during the off season, they make little to no money off of the series, they are a well ran room with good staff and dealers...etc.)

The only series that really has that are MSPT (mid-states poker tour) events, they are great structured and valued events throughout the mid-west. Their mains are all $1,100.

For smaller buy-in stuff that is good value, Venetian Deepstacks events not during the summer are all decent structured and have a lot of buy-ins in the 250$-$1,100 range when they run.

Ok thanks! I wonder what is your opinion of the field in these midwest events?

I have found the fields in LA and Vegas to be fairly tough/aggressive compared to the fields I am used to playing in the Northwest tribal casinos.

I wonder if it is the same with the midwest locals, if they are softer compared to Vegas and LA.

The mid-west fields are much softer than the L.A. and Vegas fields.

I pretty much agree with you and will be playing there some when I go back to Vegas in November. I have had some good cashes in the Venetian Deep Stacks and I think I am only hurting myself if I don't play in some of them. I did skip them this summer but it was because the buy-ins on my available days were too high - and I think they are a bit tougher in the summer vs Nov.

And yes the staff is great there.

Now that the wsop is over do you plan on taking some time off before you start playing again?

Will you be participating in the WSOPC event at Planet Hollywood in Nov?

Ya, will be taking next few months off, plan on playing next during WCOOP up in Montreal from early to end of Sept.

I didn't know there was one, as long as it doesn't clash with holiday travel/etc. i'm sure i'll play all of the events.

It is Nov 13-24th so ends a few days before Thanksgiving.

Where do you and Chris spend the holidays - with his family, yours or both?

I love Chris btw - he is so easy to talk to. :)

Welcome to CardsChat, Ryan. It was great meeting you and Chris in Vegas, and I really appreciated your input on poker situations. I'll have a question or two at some point, but just wanted to welcome you here. :hello:

If you start a new thread and name it "Ryan Laplantes coaching thread" (or whatever)

I'm sure you would get a line of people who would want to sign up could put all the details in there as well, it is much more efficient then one by one. :D

Here I even did the leg work for you lolz

People post threads for coaching, books, training here every once in awhile.. I don't think they mind - It's more of no advertising your affiliate ties to poker rooms or other poker forums or poker affiliates

I knew the name Ryan Laplante sounded familiar

a while back, I read an interview CC conducted with you:

https://www.cardschat.com/forum/general-poker-13/ryan-laplante-interview-227364/

I guess at that time you were not a member of CC and now you are. Welcome. Join the CC league, you'll have some fun! :)

a question I would like to ask: RE: knowing that you are ready to go pro. Is this related to monetary performance or an idea that you generally make better decisions at the poker table than your opponents? In other words, when you made the decision to go pro was it because you knew you were making better decisions than most people you played against or because you realized you were making money consistently from poker?

one more question: You say you have been playing poker professionally for four years now. How many years did it take before you decided you would go pro? What was (were) the major leak(s) that kept you from going pro sooner and how did you plug them? How long were you plagued with these leaks before you could wrap your hands around them?

thanks.

I decided to "go pro" when I'd had enough money to not have to work min wage to cover rent/etc. I knew I wanted to give poker a real shot, and had enough security to justify taking the shot.

I played poker for about 2 years semi recreationally before then. I was still very leak riddled when i decided to play full time, and still have some now i'm sure as well.

I'll ask some questions.

1. Did you go to college? If not, do you plan to at some point?

2. Is playing poker your end goal? Do you feel as though you will be doing this professionally 10-20 years from now?

3. How do you feel about the fact that poker is a game which has no real societal value? Not hating -- and knowing that their are a lot of Finance jobs that are similar, just wondering if when you are grinding poker have you ever felt like it was not for any real purpose, other than just getting money? Kind of goes with #2 as well.

Thanks!

Went for a year, spent most of that year playing poker online, and poker live with friends.

I plan on eventually entering real-estate investment (what my step dad does), or at least running my own business of some kind. I expect to at least play the wsop every year, and wouldn't surprize me if most of my income comes from poker for many years to come. But I could also be mostly doing other things in 10 years, will depend on how the industry changes.

I don't really play poker for the money, I play it more for the enjoyment tbh. While there isn't that much societal value from the game, there is enough personal value for me to not really care. (Most people do things for society because they feel great personally about doing so)

That being said I like doing things in the community, and plan on spending time doing more as I get settled and have more time and money to do so.
