Some sort of breach happened to some of the Brazilian poker community today. I don't know all of the details but did hear that 1 or more of the players email accounts were hacked and then somehow they managed to log on to pokerstars and open a new email account AND move funds off of the account. It was said that this happened to 30 players - losing money from their Pokerstars accounts. An estimated total of $2 million was taken.
That would be so depressing to have this happen to you. :(
I'm sure more details about this will be surfacing soon.

That's a shame but I assume Pokerstars has to refund them? Or is the security their problem?

In this regards, I do not understand why PS doesn't allow 2FA. I have it enabled at all sites possible and it's an easy additional security layer which might have prevented this happening.

PokerStars has 2FA.
Not very a very smart one, the self chosen 4 or 5 digit pin.
Better option would be the PokerStars RSA Keygen device (which can't be ordered at the moment i viewed it), but it's not cheap,
and there is also an SMS Security option.
All found under Settings -> Account details.

You are right.

I meant that they do not have a standard / free 2FA.

The keygen is not included and too expensive and the SMS option only sends a code at "suspicious" logins. I'd prefer if they send it all the time, like other sites do.

Takes 5-10 additional seconds but feels much safer to me.

Yes, I think we should wait for the official versions of what the owners of the Pokerstars poker site themselves say, maybe it wasn't the case at all who knows the truth except for the owners of the poker site itself. I think if this is the case and the protection was hacked, they will be refunded all the money that the players had in their accounts for the poker site, money is not a problem, reputation, the most important thing

Wow this is real greedy...
There is no valid argument for making the rsa keygen pruchasable and not for free!
Meanwhile GG offers 2step verification plus additional funds pw...for free .

I think the players who lost funds know that they lost funds.
Look up Dowgh-Santos on Twitter (Douglas Ferreira, MTT player part of GGpoker team) and you'll also see Pokerstars support commenting there.

Pokerstars is not liable. Someone was able to get into the player's email account(s) and then on 'live chat' they were able to change their Pokerstars email and then Withdrawal large sums of cash (the player I named lost ~$60k). And apparently there were over 30 players. :(

That's terrible but my sympathy would be higher for people who actually need the money :)

Also...it's really their own fault . Invest in encrypted email you "pros" you can afford it.

They surely had the common Mail services like gmx yahoo or msn...even I can hack that lol

You seem to have various competences. Now I'm actually curious. Please provide some references 😛
"Even I"was supposed to imply that I can't hack but guessing pws is technically hacking too. Those thieves got into the pros accounts by the exact same way .

I suspect easy pws which are crackable.
Try cracking my Email or PS pw it has 38 digits 🤣

I only saw one other player commenting 'Iive' about losing money. It wasn't a lot but it also was a player who was a LSMTT player.

I'm not sure why you're assuming these guys don't need the money? I know a lot of the Brazilian online pros came up from nothing and acquired what they have through a lot of hard work & perseverance. I respect that & it's a shame they've had money stolen from them. :(

Maybe there will be some coverage of this so we can hear of who some of the other players were and more of the details of how this came about. Maybe it was due to a training group they are part of? A staking group? Who knows... I have no idea.
It was also stated that one of the players who lost money had discovered that the 'new' email address made on his account was located ~600km from his home. (so I'm guessing, another Brazilian... maybe?)

That's right. And even if they were recreational players, it is bad the same way! In fact, because they are pros, they need the money, that's what they do for a living. For example, I don't make a living out of poker, but if I lost my bankroll, I would not die, I would not starve, but man, I would be so sad, because pretty much of what I've done last year was study and play poker in my (little) free time. And ok, if I did it once, I could do it again and recover, as long as I am healthy to do it, but the sadness and sorrow of suddenly losing what you spent years battling to conquer is just too much.

I'm really sorry for your friend who lost so much money, but I think if he had that kind of money on a poker site, he's doing fine in life and losing this money doesn't affect him much, but main life is certainly not pleasant losing that amount of money. I hope they find those guys who did these bad things and give the money back to the players

*LSMTT = Low Stakes Multi Table Tournaments $11 - $25 buyin level (one of the players was a LSMTT player)

Most online Tournament pros are keeping a working balance of 200 buyins online. (some I know keep 400 buyins in their accounts ie. $100 average buyin amount, $40,000 in their account & they are typically playing $5,000 to $10,000 worth of buyins per day).
This is really no indication of whether or not they are doing fine in life and can afford a loss like this. These were Tournament players and it is not uncommon for a tournament player to be on a 3 or 4 month downswing where they are making in the 'negative' (ie. in the 5 mos. prior to giraf taking down the wsop online MainEvent for $2.3 Million, he was actually -$540,000 in that time period which at the time was approx. 500 buyins)
I'm not sure what the average buyin levels were of all the players who lost money but assuming it was 100 - 200 buyins for many of them, it was not a small amount for them. This is their 'working bankroll'. This is the roll they invest from. Also, some of them may have been staked.

THe players who lost money were not my friends. They were players from brazil. I heard about it when one of them (a GG team pro) came to a guy's twitch stream and talked to him about it. And then later I heard more about it from other players.
