In a week that saw the only two players in front of him on the World Series of Poker Circuit all-time win list get a couple more rings, Daniel Lowery stayed right behind them by winning the $250 Seniors event at Hard Rock Tulsa for his 17th and $17,187.
Part of a field of 448 entries who created a prize pool of $89,600, the win puts him only behind Ari Engel’s 19 and Maurice Hawkins’ 18 rings. Both these players won rings in the last week — with Hawkins taking two within the last 30 days — to make the battle for the most rings good eating for poker fans.
Lowery, a sawmill owner from Arkansas, is all for it.
“When it was down to 13 or 14 rings, Ari and I kind of challenged each other and it’s been fun since then,” he told the WSOP. “This past week’s been great because Maurice got the one in Florida and then he miraculously wins that Main in Baltimore. He just crushes, so he raised the bar a little bit.
And then Josh Reichard comes in and wins number 16 and he’s also at the final table with the chip lead in Hammond right now. Ari won another to put him ahead with 19. So the race is on. It’s such a great week for the WSOP Circuit and I’m happy to be a part of it.”
Oh yeah, Reichard also kept himself in fourth on the leaderboard with a victory in a $400 H.O.R.S.E event at Horseshoe Hammond last week for his 16th ring. He’d go onto finish third in the other event.
Lowery, as usual, had a huge rail cheering him on and he says the support indeed does matter.
“Of course (it matters),” he said. “It’s not just motivating for me, but it’s very deflating for the other players when they lose a pot and then hear cheering for me on the other side. It’s big, especially at the WSOP in the thunderdome. You see those rails and it’s definitely like a sporting event.”
Lowery, like Hawkins, has yet to win a WSOP bracelet, but would like to join Engel with at least one. He plans on putting in a ton of work at this year’s WSOP in Las Vegas.
“I plan to be there five of the seven weeks. A lot of these bracelets, even though they’re diluted, I’d still like to have one. I’ve navigated big fields on the circuit and at the WSOP, so I feel like I’m on the cusp. I feel like I’m one of the better ones to navigate a 3,000-player field. I like my chances on that, I’ve never lost focus when I’m in those fields.”
