Real Money
  • Most obviously, it’s possible to win significant sums of cash if you play well and/or get lucky
  • You can make use of a welcome bonus and earn loyalty points while you play
  • Many players will only show their true colors, by bluffing for example, in a game where cash is involved
  • Get a bad beat or make a careless mistake and you stand to lose real money
  • Obscure variants might not have as many tables available for play as you would like

Free Poker
  • Offers a risk-free environment in which you can practice your skills
  • Try out different variations of poker that you may not be familiar with
  • Enjoy a more laidback approach to poker, maybe making a few friends along the way
  • Impossible to win any real cash prizes, with the possible exception of freeroll tournaments
  • Since there’s no cash on the line, players won’t necessarily behave the same way as in a 'real' game

Anyone Have Anything Else To Add To The List?

I think real money gambling has a different reading of dummy games, after all, dummy games in most of them don't take their chips seriously and many of these players are just starting out. I prefer not even to play with fictional money, not get used to playing DONK.

Yeah once the mechanics of game play have been learned I feel playing free games is not only a waste of time but detrimental to your game ... I'm not saying it's easier to play against better players but I think that at low/micro limits you will learn more and get a better grip on playing with more predictable players who are moving up like you are .. kind of a stay in your own pond kind of thing ???

I feel as though a lot of freerolls and some micros play just like play money. Although I do quite enjoy CC and other private freerolls because I end up just chatting and having a good time if I make it to the final tables. Always good fun

I've personally found that players bluff quite frequently in free live games - my school has a poker club that hosts such games and they often show down weird hands like king high after getting called down

Play money chips in my opinion is an absolute waste of time. It's definitely not comparable to micros or even freerolls. In play money games nobody will fold any holding that has even the tiniest sliver of equity until the river. Bottom pair, gutshot, chasing 4 flush with ace/king of the same suit

There are people who give money to buy play chips. Everytime I think of it I remind to myself that we live in a beautiful world.

I forget which pro said it but I kind of agree. There's a hell of a lot more exciting and stimulating hobbies than poker if there isn't some green incentive on the line or at least some shot at a little green reward for the effort.

In my opinion free poker can not help you with your game because if there are no money involved everybody plays very loose. Even freerolls are much closer to normal game than free poker. Free poker is option only when you want to loose some time and can not play live poker like for example during flight or long trip without internet access.

It,s always better to start with the freerolls for the new players. Right now you can find some good freerolls, especially at 888 poker. It can help you to build the bankroll without any risk. Anyway, for sure, if you think you are ready for a serious game, cash games or tournament will be a good choise to earn some good money.

Once again with this argument.

It's one thing to dismiss poker played with play money/chips from your point of view as a waste of time for you personally. It's another to define the entire idea as a waste of time period, and therefore flawed or misguided.

Hundreds of millions have hobbies which they take seriously with no relation to money, the list is endless. Many are dangerous (diving, rock climbing), many involve highly developed skills. People take them seriously.

Hundreds of thousands play on line with play money day in and out, certain sites have leagues and the competition is fierce. As noted recently, Terrance Chan even said on DAT poker podcast that anyone who has built a play chip stack of tens of millions of chips is playing seriously (and he used to be somewhat dismissive himself).

As for people buying play chips, there is a valid reason- that of being able to play at the highest levels against stiffer competition with high buy ins. In the elite games you sometimes see players in billion chip pots (and that is serious because they can be wiping out rivals entire bankrolls which have taken a considerable time to amass).

Further, regarding the tone taken to play money - people making such comments seldom consider or acknowledge for many, play money on-line is the only learning tool they have at their disposal. Many people do not have any card/poker culture in their family. Many live in countries where live poker/casinos are either banned or simply do not exist. If interested to play poker, the only avenue they are provided is to learn on-line with play chips.

Many graduate through this to freerolls and then cash. But others opt to stick with play money because their lives are rich and complicated as it is ( I know of doctors, lawyers and scientists who love the game...but only indulge on play sites. They do not need further stress in their lives).

So yes, for you personally, play money might be of no interest whatsoever. However that does not mean it is not an invaluable learning tool and of deep interest and played in a competitive environment for others.

Real money: The players play the game more serious. Not so many all in calls when they have their own money in the game.
Play Money: I see a lot more all-in calls. If they loose oh-well nothing lost. Register for the next game. Some times you get lucky and you get a table thats want to play the game serious and play to win and learn.

playing for virtual money I do not feel the emotions that accompany me when playing for money, the satisfaction with the winnings is less as well as less anger after failure

Hello.
In my opinion, free poker can only be played when you need to familiarize yourself with the rules of the game and the functionality of the platform. That is, it takes 2-3 hours. If you really want to learn how to play poker, you need to start playing real money right away.

Learning to play poker well without the repercussions of losing money isn't easy to come by. Cardschat Freerolls (and other closed community freeroll/low-cost events) are honestly the best way to experience some semblance of "poker" at little to no risk.

I'm not saying there aren't a fair share of fish, but you'll get some decent players who just want to participate with the community and relax, and that's a valuable experience for new players looking to get better.

If you dont know anything, literally anything thats the only reason to play play money games. If you know poker fundamentals and want to advance and learn more about poker you need to go into real money, just the way it is. Play money is like a video game, people dont take it seriously

You see this is where a type of poker player always blows his own argument and contradicts himself...

Play money is like a video game, people don't' take it seriously...

You absolutely picked the wrong endeavor to make a comparison. The video games industry dwarfs the poker industry with huge sums spent of development and billions spent purchasing them. Millions take video games seriously all around the world and the top gaming teams play for millions of dollars in prizes.

However, your basic assertion is wrong. Hundreds of thousands take play money poker seriously day in and out. I have no issue with any individual stating they can't take play money seriously themselves...the issue is people pronouncing on behalf of others what they do or do not take seriously. Essentially it proves you have no idea what people actually enjoy and why.
