There are different cases where I have a friend who lost 40 thousand bucks on poker. How did he stop?

This is a serious gambling addiction, it calls for a psychologist. And it only works if he wants it too.

depending on how much he won before, if it's part of his bankroll, why not, if it's money through deposit, it's an addiction and he rather needs help. By coincidence, poker has become only a source of income for me in my country, and I can't make deposits for fun, freerolls are everything)

If he loves the poker and wants to gamble. He need to know that with that money it's possible to find a good mental coach and a good poker coach either. He just need to plan how to invest that money to be able to continue playing but on winners side.

He probably needs treatment.

When I have lost some money I simply stop playing for a couple of weeks because apart from the money I have lost I feel that nothing goes well with the hands I play, so I prefer to stop playing, but you should see if it is for you very difficult to stop you should uninstall the apps and stay away from gambling sites, and if it is still difficult then you should seek help before it gets worse

Bankroll management is a system that allows you to define your daily spending limit for the game. If you do not have the strength to limit yourself, almost every site has additional functionality for voluntary self-restraint. You may want to take advantage of this additional functionality.

Unfortunately, this happens when we have a lot of money and we have invested a lot of money in luck as in the game.

Over what time period was the $40,000 lost?

As crazy as it sounds if it was over a long enough period it's actually still a reasonably affordable hobby. Most people don't win at poker, they do it for entertainment. Entertainment can be expensive depending on what you like to do.

Also losing $40,000 at NL500 or while playing $1050 MTTs is different from losing $40,000 at 50NL and $22 MTTs

A dollar amount without context doesn't really say much.

But I hope your friend gets help if they need it.

The first reason you can't stop is that you have already lost a lot of money. So what should you do to avoid such situations.
1. Do not lose a lot of money.
2. Just play in freerolls.
This is the solution to your problem :)

When I lost $100 cash I went crazy, I stopped quickly because my wife threatened to end the marriage, she knew I would lose a lot. Today I only play freerolls and low-value tournaments.

maybe I can't help you much because I'm the type of people who like to play more freerolls than money, but if you start to have a minimal bad streak and you feel that everything is against you and it is not going to improve, it is better that you stop, close everything for a while, I play more freerolls when I feel that there is no way I can win I stop playing for a few days, it is not only about taking care of the money it is also your health, close it, uninstall it and forget about poker for a while, focus on other things

Some countries - in example my country Denmark - have a very efficient way to combat compulsive gambling addiction. The legislation and gambling authority demands that the poker sites have a self exclusion option called Rofus. Here, players can exclude themselves for a given period or for lifetime. The problem is that some addictive players do not realize their problem and chases to get even only to lose more money. There is also a treatment center, who uses the Minnesota model which is said to be very effective. We go by the latin word for gambling addiction, LUDOMANI.

If you can't stop, it could be a sign of addiction. I think it would be best to seek help from specialists and also write appropriate appeals describing the problem to all those sites where you play.

I believe that becoming aware that you are playing badly or that something is going very wrong is the best way.

Each site has tools for voluntary restriction. If you can't stop, you just need to inform the support team and they will help you :)

Based on what you've described, it suggests serious mental problems if he's squandering money to this extent and losing all the time.
The only positive thing is that he has a lot of money (despite losing money every time) and he's not living on the streets yet.
Regardless of that, he's not very aware of the basics (bankroll management), and probably doesn't have as much of the basics as he thinks.

There is no need to let this situation happen, poker for money is evil, lose 50 dollars and stop playing.Go to a psychologist, it helps to get your head in order. I wish everyone who has the same problem to restrain this beast and learn to live again with joy in their eyes.
