Let's say there's a prestigious poker tournament with a $1,000,000 prize pool 500 miles from your home and you've received an invitation that you can participate in the tournament for free if you travel only by bicycle and take exactly one calendar month. Per diem is paid. What do you do?

I have been in such tournaments when pokerstars was at its peak. If I remember well, CardsChat had tournaments where tickets could be won for such big tournies. Huge turnaments with tens of thusands of players. :) But these tournaments are full of sharks and pros and there is little chance to cash big, so I would just skip it. :sneaky:

500 miles on a bike for 1 month with per diem & ticket to $1M? Its 80 minutes of 20kph biking exercise per day & lots of time sightseeing or playing online. Sounds like a good deal to me.

Hi :)
I would definitely go. It's worth it. I love cycling, although I don't actually ride very often due to lack of time. But I would be ready for such a cycling trip, especially since the final stop is quite promising :)
Good luck :)

About 2 hours of bike riding each day for a month. I think the ride there would be way more fun thinking of potential $$$ signs than the sad ride back home with empty pockets.

Funny question, haha! Yeah, I’d totally do it. I love biking, so 500 miles isn’t a big deal for me. Give me a couple of days, and I’ll be there!

To get to such a tournament, I need to miraculously pass a lot of checkpoints by bike, and 99.9% of the time I'll get to a completely different tournament where they give out machine-gun bursts rather than cards...

I would immediately decline. Even if I wanted to ride a bike for 500 miles (I don't!) - I would consider it an insult. Biking in the US is extremely dangerous.

I am definitely going. I love cycling, especially if there is a good reason. I can easily pack for a trip, it's never been a problem for me. 1-2 hours to prepare everything you need and I'm ready to go :)

The $1 million prizepool tells us nothing of the value of the tournament. It could be a $100 buyin and I'm pretty sure I'm not going on a 1month bike ride to play a $100 tournament.
Now if there were only 10 entrants in it, I'd do the ride for the $100k entry (although to be honest, I'm no longer able to do something as physical as this)

Earlier in my life, I'd be doing the 500 mile ride for fun. Many times I have ridden 80+ miles in a day. My brother rode his bicycle from B.C. canada all the way to Peru S.A. (5,000 miles). He flew back home as his knees were in rough shape from the trip. He told me that on some days, the full day of riding was all uphill while ascending a mountain pass.

It's easy to dream, but you'll never get a free ticket to a $1 million tournament and it is nonsense that anyone tells you how to get there.
I understand the point of the question (theoretical), but it's just pointless.

Are per diems paid?
Then there are no more questions, I'm packing my backpack and hitting the road :)
Easy decision.
