This is my first posting at this site.

I was at the final table of an 85 player live tourney. My experience with these tourneys is that once the field gets to 5 or 6 players, the winnings are usually chopped.

At this stage of the tourney, I had noticed that most hands were folding to the blinds or sometimes there were one or two limps preflop. I had 27BB in early position with KcTc.
I understand it is generally incorrect to limp first-in, but my thoughts were raises preflop had been very rare and I could probably call a min raise with this hand if I limped, but I probably couldn't call a three-bet if I raised preflop. So I limped first-in.

As played, the hand folded to the button (with 17BB) who raised 2X. The blinds folded and I called. There were now 6.5 BB in the pot (includes a BB ante). The flop was Ks 8h 5d. I checked to the button who C-bet 2BB and I called. Now 10.5 BB in the pot. Turn was Th. I bet 3BB and the button shoved for his remaining 13 BB. I called and he showed AJh (12 outs). The river was the 2h giving him the nut flush.

My questions:
Is it reasonable to limp first-in in this situation?
Would it have been better to just fold preflop considering the likelihood that I would have probably cashed out if I played tight and let the small stacks fight it out?

I appreciate anyone's thoughts.
thank you!

I think limp was a major mistake, hand no where near strong enough.
From LJ+ you can open pot, fold to 3 bet in most cases.
With ICM consideration you can get away from this hand on the turn, betting here was a mistake IMHO as your hand is marginal and wants to now get to showdown as cheaply as possible.

you played the hand correctly, because your hand is marginal hand. if you think small stacks would have knocked out each other, then you should fold pre-flop, even if you limp you can fold after villain's 2x raise. But after this kind of flop, you cannot hold back.

I have 2 questions
1 When you say chopped do you mean evenly 5 or 6 players take equal amounts of prize money? If yes and you want to chop why play?
2 What was your plan for this hand preflop vs a raise- make a flush? Hit a Ten and hope it is good? What was the range of hands that you expected to be raised by? Is KTs a strong holding vs that range? These questions are all a subset of what your plan was.

We have to have a strong plan for the hand if we are going to use a limping strategy beyond hitting our hand or letting our V realize their equity.
To help with that plan ask yourself what I will do if? Then think about different boards and Villain actions. Would we want to attack a small flop bet? Do we want to chase a flush draw on the FT OOP at this stack depth if we are going to chop?

As played you got the V to stack off, but they hit.
