World class players like Messi, Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo, Rooney, etc. never materialized during the competition, what is the reason of this tremendous disaster?

They're strikers who score a lot of goals, but soccer is a game of mid-fielders and defense.

because it doesn't rely on a single superstar player, but more or less on the team's chemistry.

Only one of the mentioned is a striker, the other 3 are wingers/attacking midfielders.

I think it's mainly a combination of 2 things:
1) They had very demanding seasons (Messi played 47 games this past season) and may reach the World Cup burned out.
2) They're the main concern of the opponents, who'll pay extra attention to neutralize them.

The same thing happens in the World Series in baseball. The star hitters are never given any good pitches to hit. The pitchers concentrate on getting the weak players out instead.

I agree with this but ronaldo, kaka and rooney are also overrated

Mebbe I'm a noobcake, but when you google their names, it says they all play forward (at least the 3 guys in the pictures, I realize Kaka plays mid).

And either way, they're kinda like a flashy WR playing American Football. They make highlight reels, put up sexy statistics, but they're probably not the driving factor that makes teams win.

Or, I could totally be talking out my ass.:s:

Wingers are considered forwards but not all forwards are strikers.

maybe because the other players that they are playing against are for 1 good enough to play against those super star players (thats why their in the game) and 2 when a player puts on that jersey that shows their country they usually play their hearts out ..

Messi I think led the Cup with SOG and had a number of assists and a goal or 2 I wouldn't call his cup a bust just didn't really take over any games.

Theres numerous reasons why these players didnt perform to the standards the fans/press expect, several have been mentioned above.Others are:

Messi was excellent in the games bar germany, goals arent the only measure of a good performance. He made numerous assists for Higuain in the group games and with a bit more luck would have had several goals himself.

Ronaldo is the only outstanding talent in the attacking half of the portugal team, this was shown up against Spain where they neutralised him and thereby the team. Portugal set up very defensively with the hope a bit of Ronaldo magic would win them games, it didnt happen bar the N.Korea game.

Rooney was still carrying the injury Utd had rushed him back from to try and save their season, plus for England the formation doesnt suit either him or Gerrard but seems to be set up to play all the big name players, rather than focusing on the 'team'.

Kaka hasnt had a good season for 3 years which is probably why Milan were delighted Madrid stumped up 60m for him. He also missed large chunks of the season with an injury which doesnt help you build form. brazil's problem came when Elano got injured as he was pivotal to that Brazil sides attacking contingent.

At the end of the day the World cup is only 7 games which is nothing in a season for footballers, theres no time to really find form if you aren't coming into the tourney with any. Also a good world cup not a great player makes, look at the likes of El Hadj Diouf, Roger Milla. Hell Podolski and Klose have had great tournaments yet havent been able to get much of a game for Bayern for the last couple of years.

I would certainly add Torres to your list of big names that misfired in this World Cup. He hasn't looked confident in his ability all tournament and never got that first goal that could have spurred him on to bigger and better things.

I think Messi had a good tournament without setting it alight. He got alot of assists and narrowly missed some goal-scoring opportunities.

Rooney never looked up for it from the start for me. He was carrying an injury and really didn't look like he wanted to be there at all. He also didn't get much service from his team mates.

Ronaldo was more interested in being a show pony than working hard for his team.

Kaka hasn't been the same since he left Milan. Most likely a lack of confidence is a big reason for his poor showing.

All in all, it hasn't been a great World Cup this time around.

Hopefully we get a great final on Sunday.

Drogba = Fail
Rooney = Fail
Gerrard = Fail
Ronaldo = BIG Fail
Italy & France = FAIL
Robinhio & Kaka = Fail
Fernando Torres = Fail (so far)

Messi - look good, but no goals :(

Maicon - i didn't know before but looked impressive
Forlan - playing just the way he does every week in Spain (glad you dumped him Fergie? lol :rolleyes::D)
Villa - actually impressed me more than he does for Valencia

The biggest names with the biggest wages seem to have been the least impressive - coincidence? ;)
