Two major stories in major league baseball today. First, San Francisco Giant outfielder Melky Cabrera, 2nd in batting average and this year's All Star game MVP, was suspended 50 games for a positive drug test.

Interestingly, he was apologetic afterwards, admitting that "my postive test was the result of my use of a substance (testosterone) I should not have used". Unbelievably, I heard a couple of sports radio hosts complimenting him on his willingness to accept the suspension - apparently not denying the allegations is viewed as a significant positive, given every other cheater's vehement and inevitable denial.

Second, Seattle Mariner pitcher Felix Hernandez pitched a perfect game this afternoon, retiring all 27 of the batters he faced, 12 of them via strikeout, in a 1-0 victory over Tampa Bay. It was the 3rd perfect game of the season and the 23rd in major league history. 6 of the 23 have been thrown in the last four years, and a 7th one was denied in 2010 only when an umpire blew a potential game-ending call, later apologizing for botching such an important play.

the thing is, there is still a performance enhancing drug problem in baseball. this deals with synthetic testosterone. according to victor conte, a steroid dealer who is known from balco, there are people still juicing like cabrera.

It seems cyclical, but the pitchers seem to be the ones juicing up moreso than the sluggers nowadays, and thus, average pitchers are extending their careers or pitching gems supposedly out of nowhere.

And Bud Selig is a criminal for turning the other way during the steroid era. If baseball was really serious about addressing the issue, he should be behind bars now. But he is just a puppet for the owners and as long as the big money keeps flowing, nothing will change.
On a side note, I think Pete Rose is a complete douche, but keeping the all-time hits leader out of the HOF is criminal.
