Wow! I'm in so much disbelief at the moment. Lived in San Diego most of my life and followed his career pretty closely. Sad day.

RIP to a great linebacker. I bet a few concussions took a toll on him, but supposedly some players don't take retirement well when they have to retire. Seau was probably one of them, which is very sad.

No hint of steroids AFAIK. Possible repeated head injuries/concussions or just difficulty being away from the game. I think I heard somewhere that his family is going to allow examination of his brain for possible complications from multiple concussions.

You heard correct. Living here in Southern Cal area I knew he was popular but had no idea until his death how much. Some of the local radio stations took callers who would talk about their professional/personal relationships with Junior and they had nothing but glowing things to say about him. From everything they said he was a very down to earth guy who, if you met him for the first time, he treated you like an old friend. Always took the time for fans. He was one of a kind on and off the field. R.I.P Jr.

Life after football can be like a god having to come down from Olympus. Idolized and then somewhat forgotten. These guys are also too tough to ask for help, even when they need it. But, what a great player, one of the best.

I live in Oceanside and there is a huge memorial at his beach house. Very touching.
