It’s almost here, my favorite time of year. Cool fall Saturdays filled with friends, family, beer, and Mountaineer football!
The season opener is this Saturday and I can’t wait. I’ll start on Friday night with the preparations. Pack the car with tailgate gear. Make the pepperoni rolls. Lay out tickets for the game. Try to sleep.
Saturday morning I’ll get up at 6AM, and ready myself and the kid. We’ll be out the door by 6:30 and will have the whole crew (2 adults, 3 kids) picked up and on our way by 7. We’ll hit Morgantown just about 9AM, quick stop at Kroger for some brats or burgers for the grill, beer and soda for the cooler, and be in our tailgate spot by 9:30, a quick 2.5 hours before kickoff (not a fan of the noon kick).
After we get everything setup, the kids (ages 4, 13, and 14) will throw the football, play cornhole, or watch TV while the grown-ups drink a few beers, catch-up with our tailgate neighbors, and get ready to cook. Food will be out on the table by 11AM and by 11:30 we’ll be heading toward the stadium to ensure being in our seats for the band and team entrance. Sometime just before noon the Mountaineer will fire his musket in the air as the announcer says, “Let’s bring on the Mountaineers!” and the crowd goes wild. The next 3 hours will determine how the rest of the day goes. A victory and the tailgate will go for 2 or 3 hours after the game (although since I’m driving this week there will be no beers after the game kicks for me). A defeat and we’ll be out of town an hour later. Game 1 should be a sure victory over a lower division opponent (a cupcake opener) but nothing is ever guaranteed and sometimes strange things happen.
With a win and good traffic we’ll have everyone dropped off and be home by 9PM just in time for the kid and me to go to bed completely exhausted. Another great Saturday of Mountaineer football will be behind us with 2 weeks to count down before the next home game.
Is it Saturday yet?
